what is a good sleeping for the AT

“If you just want to carry one bag for the whole of the AT what would be a good bag, like one with a 25 deg rating. Or what is the best way to go should i get two bags, a summer with like a 45 rating and then like another one for the higher mountains and the early start of the trail.”

what do you normally do in th course of a year? do that. my 20 bag goes with me in all weather, if its warmer, i dont zip it up or just sleep on top of it. if you use two bags in the course of a year, do that.”

“I used a 20 degree bag the whole way. A lot of people switch to a lighter bag from Pearisburg to Glencliff, but you can still have cool nights even in summer. (I also kept my fleece the whole way and was very glad I did. If nothing else, it makes a good pillow.) I didn't want the hassle of buying another bag and then having to switch, but if you tend to sleep warm anyway, and you have home support, it might be worth the weight savings.”

“i use about a 25 rated bag i guess then the only thing i need to know does it get colder then that any were on the trail, thats what i'm worried about, but don;t really what to carry a 0 rated in the summer if i don;t have to”

“Yes it can get colder than 25 on the trail depending on time of year and location but in summer that's not typical. In early spring it can definately get colder than 25.”

“I'd start off with a 15 degree down bag and then swap it for a 40 degree synthetic bag when it got warm.
And a 3/4 length Z-rest pad for the whole trail.”
