it's snowing in Nashville today, so when you go outside you get hugged by the wind and kissed by the flakes. I got mine on my lunch break! :)

I'm making dinner for Jon tonight. I'm thinking it will be chicken marsala with smashed potatoes. He got called in to work last night at midnight. They opened up the armory as a warming center to Gary and surrounding area so he had to be there to open it and man it. He called me this morning to say he was tired and going home at noon to sleep. Not a single person showed up to utilize their warmth. Ah well.....

He deserves a little special attention tonight.

A man was waiting as I unexpectedly drove to work near regular time today (normally Wednesdays I come in LATE)

Seems he was waiting for the office to open to drop off my flower -- a cool anthurium!! -- and some Reese's peanut butter cups.

LOL, I spoiled the surprise as he'd planned it (that it would be by my desk when I arrived later), but then again, he got some appreciation for it.

How cool is that??!?? ;-)

I took California Rolls, Japanese Spring Rolls, fresh cut fruit, Mango Sweet Tea, and Godiva Chocolate, to the school today.

As planned, the other teachers were VERY jealous.

Wifey was surprised and happy!

Yeah, just any old man... LOL!

It was dryfoot. ;-P The flowers are anthurium. I'd never seen them before. Cool!

I personalized a card I sent to him. Can't wait to get the response back on that. :-)

And a Happy VD to all!

"...according to research by the International Labor Rights Fund and US LEAP. For example, a survey of workers on flower plantations near Bogotá found that employees were exposed to 127 different pesticides, three of which are considered extremely toxic. One-fifth of the chemicals used in flower production in South America -- products such as DDT and methyl-bromide -- are restricted or banned in the United States and Europe. Since environmental laws in South America are either lax or not enforced, chemical runoff into waterways is common, contributing to species decline.

Workers are often sickened after applying herbicides, fungicides and pesticides without proper protection. Two-thirds of Colombian flower laborers suffer from impaired vision, respiratory and neurological problems; still births and babies born with congenital malformations are disproportionately high among women who have worked in floriculture...."

We haven't really sanctified VD into our ritual routines around here. A card (that will get recycled), some flowers (that will wilt and go into the compost), chocolate (we don't need VD for that) mena nothing to actions and words; we both don't see the importance of focusing all of what should come everyday, into one day a year: a daily celebration of love, commitment and anticipation for the good things coming in the future.

VD has become too much of a "make up day" for people who don't take the time out every day to say "thanks for being with me" and "I love you" to their spouse.

The sad thing is that the person (mostly a guy) will think that their debt is paid in full for a year and continue to neglect the needs of their women until next VD. Not for all fellas, but most -- IMHO, of course.

I had such a nice evening with Jon, but that wasn't especially notable as we have nice evenings often. I guess what makes it special is that because it was V-Day, we made a point of telling each other what we thought of each other. His card along with a long handwritten message was the most awesome thing anyone has ever said to me. I poured my heart out into what I wrote to him. We opened a bottle of cabernet, I made chicken marsala, which turned out fantastic, and had warm chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Then we sat on the couch for the rest of the night just enjoying each other's company. I laughed much of the time...I just love a sense of humor.

Funny, maybe it's a midwestern thing, but I don't remember many people thinking about "Sweetest Day"... It's in October... fall's answer to Valentine's Day...

Anybody out there capitalize on it?

I am sorry to hear that mapleleaf, what happened?

I spent the day in the hospital as well, which I might have tolerated, but it was with my mom. I spent my anniversary, (Sep), in the hospital with my daughter. Not a good year for romance, eh?

Okay what you guys doing this year?

I am a bit split between a new ladder with Outriggers for support and A new lightweight Hedge Trimmer...

The positives are the Outriggers on the Ladder mean I don't have to worry about her falling off while cleaning the gutters...

The Hedge Trimmer means she can better trim the Hedges and be able to rake the trimmings up that evening....
