Wilderness First-Aid
Just wanted to give a heads up to people in the area...

I know AmyG and Pennsy were talking about similar training...

This program is being offered by the Pocono Environmental Education Center. Their website is www.peec.org

Wilderness First-Aid
March 12-14, 2004
Course Only (Includes Lunch) Cost: $85
Course, lodging, and meals. Cost: $149
Participate in the full 16 hour American Red Cross Certification Course for Wilderness First-Aid over one weekend. Course begins Friday evening and concludes Sunday at noon.

I'm thinking of doing this myself if my schedule allows for it.

Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near me offered a similar course late last summer. Proving you don't just have to live in the mts. to take these courses. :-)

Adventurist
Thanks much for the post. I had been looking at the same course offered the same weekend, but in Harrisburg. I checked out the PEEC website but found no info about the course. I e-mailed them to get all the info and registration forms. I will definitely sign up for this location. Let me extend an invite to you and Pennsy and to anyone else interested in taking the course: I have a cabin on Lake Minisink, which is about 5 miles north of Bushkill, Pa. off of Rt. 402. If you guys decide to sign for the course, you'd be more than welcome to stay at the cabin from Friday until Sunday. Let me know!
And, thanks again for the heads-up!

For Sierra Folks

http://www.sierramountaincenter.com/pages/individualtripspages/summertrips/wfrfull.php

This is Wilderness Medicine Institute's (NOLS) Wilderness First Responder course. It's hosted at the Sierra Mountain Center in Bishop, CA.

There are others in Yosemite and Flagstaff, AZ as well. They're all over the place as you can see from NOLS's web site.

Today I emailed Sierra Mountain Center to get the schedule for this year. Hopefully they're set up for it in March or April.

I just talked to Ethan at PEEC...
Registration is by phone:

570-828-2319. Visa and Master Card are accepted for the class

The course begins Friday night at 4 pm and concludes Sunday at Noon. The fee is $149 for the course, lodging and meals. Lodging will be in PEEC¹s cabins that are heated and have a private bath.

If you just want to complete the course only the fee is $85 and includes lunch on Saturday.

I called to get more info on adding the Wilderness module to my ARC Instructor list...and now plan on being there to complete my Wilderness instructor co-teach!

>:D

It should be a great class.

Let us know if they teach ya to safety pin a persons tongue to their lip to keep the airway open.

Preferably, you are transporting them and they are unconscious.

Pennsy and Adventurist,
Like AmyG already said...register by phone:
(570)828-2319. If you don't want to spend the $149 for the course, you are more than welcome @ my cabin. This offer goes out to anyone who wants to take the course and is traveling a distance. The price for the course and lunch Saturday is only $85 compared to $149 for the package.
Let me know if you register and need a place to stay so we can make arrangements.

This is actually untimely for me also but I've been trying to catch this class for the last year. If you decide to register last minute, my offer stands. It would be nice to finally meet you.

Hah... for some reason I think that you will hear this during training:

"Bruce, you will make a fine victim for this demonstration"

5 minutes later you will look like "The Mummy"

I'm registered for the training. When they have the full itinerary complete, they will email it to me and I'll post it. Anybody else register?

The only bad news is that it's the same weekend as a trip with Pete and friends.

My wilderness first aid class is this Saturday, and I have to take a cell phone for work with me, in order to be able to go!
Probably that doesn't seem like such a biggee to most people, but I don't even know how to work one...(is it anything like power windows, LOL?)

:(

I think Pete said fiend when he mentioned you, not friend.

Twiggy - put your phone on vibrate so it won't disturb the class. just be careful where you put it. Whewww, thank goodness I didn't really post that.

Amy - my neice lives near Shawnee so I might visit and stay there. Of course, a party at Mike's cabin sounds like fun. Are you going to be one of the instructors?

ps... check your mail tomorrow. :o)
Pennsy

Yes, I will be one of the instructors!! The details on whether or not I will get housing have not yet been shared with me...apparently, this is the first time they are offering the class.

hmmmm...a TT party at Mikes?!!! Do you think he knew what he was getting into when he offered?

moohahahaaa
AmyG

Well, he didn't say anything about a party, just the invite to his cabin. Of course we all know if Bruce Almighty! says party, there will be party.
