I hiked with Pedxing on Saturday and just got this email.

MAN INJURED TRYING TO EXTINGUISH FIRE
>
>Date: February 16, 2004 Page: B2 Section: Metro/Region
>
>An early-morning fire near Porter Square left one man hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns, fire officials said. The blaze began in a single family house on Beech Street when a candle apparently ignited a mattress in a 17-year-old's second-floor bedroom, according to fire officials. The teenager woke his father, David Vogel, who dragged the burning mattress into the bathroom in an effort to extinguish the blaze. The fire spread however, injuring Vogel, who was rushed by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was in critical condition yesterday, officials said. No other occupants of the house were injured. The fire department estimated property damage at $150,000.

I will post any additional information as I receive it.

My prayers are with David and his family.

I am stunned. Our problems seem very insignificant all of a sudden.

Holy Crap! Man! I hope things turn out good! What can we do to help? Anyone in the area to help with any needs they might have?

Times like this, TT peeps need to pull together and help any way we can!

I just called Mass General, no patient by that name admitted there.

Mass General in Boston, right?

The critical point for burn patients is about a week and a half after the incident.

Critical condition does not sound too good.

Oh my gosh! Pedxing e-mailed me this week inviting me to go on the dayhike on Saturday with him, MadRiver and a few other folks. I had already committed to spending the day helping to raise $ for David's house, a local sort of Ronald McDonald house, otherwise I would have gone.

"Knock First" just did a show on the makeover Natti's room for an episode. Natti is one of Pedxing's sons. Natti was 15 years old at the time of the show in the Fall of 2003.

Pedxing- thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I'm about 2.5 hours away from Boston. I'll send Pedxing an e-mail (although I doubt he's reading his e-mail) to see if there is anything I can do. I may have his phone numbers in an old e-mail.

I called the hospital and they said he may be a "confidential patient"
meaning that if he was hospitalized because of an accident and it was publicized, he might not be on the patient list.

Anyone know if you can send an e-card to Mass General? I couldn't find anything on the website.

Wow! Hope the old chap is OK. If anyone gets any info on any way we can help out (sending clothes, money, whatever) let us all know.

Hope his gear made it through OK too.

Several of us who were on the hike tried to call Mass General for an update, but there seems to be some problem getting conformation on whether or not he is there and if so, his condition. I will let you all know as soon as I get any additional information.

David, I wish you the best of recoveries with most haste. I am sure that any damage you have encured to your self is/was an act of heroism to protect your family. I do not know all of the story, but from what is hinted, if you had not put your self at risk, it would have been your family. I honor you for your courage and devotion. I wish you only the best.

Sincerly,

Keith

Given the damage to the house, I doubt it is livable much less have the phones working. I’m sure his son(s) are probably staying with their mother. I did email a few people to see if they heard anyone further.

I just spoke with Pedxing's girlfriend, Ellen. I understand that someone (maybe MadRiver) had just spoken to her before I did. I'll wait a little for MadRiver to post, but Pedxing is in really bad shape. I am going to e-mail her my contact info and told her to please let me know if there's anything I/we (TTers) can do.

He will be in the ICU for approx. 2 months, 50% of his body has mostly 2nd degree burns. His lungs are pretty bad. He is being kept unconcious by the pain medication and won't remeber anything from the next few days/weeks.

Please keep Pedxing in your thoughts and prayers over the next few months.
