Who would like to camp in the snow in Sequoia N.P.?

March 6th and 7th.
Little Baldy Trail, 1.75 miles.
700 feet elevation gain to 8050 feet.
Full moon.

Only 1.75 miles, 700' elevation gain? I think I could do that even with a bad back, arm and sore feet...count me in!

That sure looks nice.

March 6th is my wife's birthday (Double nickels).

What to do?

Where will we be camping? If we camp at Lodgepole, I might head up the Twin Lakes trail instead of doing Little Baldy.

then I'd be able to hang around camp with the baldy group.

The guide book I have suggests camping on the summit of Little Baldy.

Wing are you talking about the car campground at Lodgepole? Boo Hisss

Plus doing Little Baldy as a hike would make it OVER 3 miles!

Oh, we're going to camp on the summit of Little Baldy - that sounds great. I'd like to do that.

It is said to have one of the best views in Sequoia :)

Phil tell your wife that your present to her is some time alone.

See you on the trail.

I might be up for it, depends on Mammoth conditions. 1.75 miles would take a little over an hour to backpack to.

I'm not familiar with the area. Are there any hiking options? Is there anywhere snowboard?

Will there be enough snow for snowshoeing in that area? I think I'll do some other exploring and then meet you guys on Little Baldy in the afternoon. It shouldn't take much more than a couple hours for me to reach the summit.

Hey wingding. Who's the "baldy group", anyway? Phil and Naviguesser?

Where's Skibum? He would know about conditions.
Snowy...I'm not sure about the snowboarding....but they were supposed to get 18" at 8,000'
yesterday. There are several options in this area for longer day trips or backpacks.

Aero....I have the least amount of hair on my head :)

I like the idea of a short backpack/basecamp destination with options for further exploration, especially since this is the first I've been out in a while. I just hope there will be enough snow to snowshoe in.

snow was supposed to be at 8,000 feet down here too, but there looks to be snow down to around 6,000 feet down here.

Navi...
this is what Skibum had to say....

"Hey Wind Walker!

OOOOOOYAAAAA, as far as snow goes, you'll have plenty!

As far as getting to the trailhead, hard to say right now. If this storm
passes in the next day or two, and the road crews catch up with clearing all the frontcountry areas they might be able to get to the Generals Hwy. I'll let you know how things are looking in a few days.

I did hear rumors of another storm possibly coming in a few days after this one. If I were you guys, I might look at alternitives.

Remember, if things are totally snowed in, and you still want to get up here, you can camp out at my place and ski or snowshoe the trails around here. Just let me know."

I don't think I'm going to make this trip either. I just got loaded down at work and won't be able to make it a 3-day weekend like I was hoping.

I guess I'll be doing an overnight trip in the San Bernardino Mountains the weekend of the 6th. There's tons of snow in the local mountains now, so it should be beautiful.

Your letting work get in the way of backpacking? Shame shame... :)

I may have to cancel unless my tax check gets here. Got some car repairs on my daily-driver I have to do. :(

It's a catch-22 situation. I have to work to pay for my backpacking gear, but if I'm working all the time I don't get to go backpacking.

The boss said, "Things are starting to break loose. Take your vacation now, or in July."
So, I'm going on vacation, and won't be able to make this trip.
I feel really bad about baleing on a trip that I started the plans for.
This sucks! But in a good way.

I'm still going to go out in the snow for an overnight backpacking trip, but I'm going to have to do it in the mountains of the Angeles or San Bernardino National Forests. That way I won't need to take extra time off from work.

Can you see with my head hung in shame?

Joking aside, I do feel bad about that.
My boss and my wife both ganged up on me. It's also screwing up the beer making that was planned for this weekend, meeting Tarabull when she comes to Calif., and maybe the Mojave Preserve Trip from another site.

Oh, the sacrifices I make to keep the bosses happy. Oh, woe. Woe is me.
