Trust me on this one, Di; there are a lot of places around here where you really wouldn't want to say that.

Thanks so much for all of the info. I'll print this out and give it to the person that asked about it.

A canoe trip might be a good idea. Cocoa Williams and I have talked about doing one at the Okeefenokee and one around here would be a good tune up trip since I've never canoe camped.

I live about 10 minutes from the Flint River. I usually rent a canoe once a year and float down the river. I've been thinking about getting a kayak but have no idea what I want.

Last Fall I went with my daughters class on a float trip down the Flint River. We had a great time!

The reason I ask is I have been trying to find a kayak for some time now for taking on weekend trips. My two main criteria to justify buying one have been: 1) it has to be lighter than my canoe (44lbs) and 2) able to hold me and a weekends worth of gear.

Zac, if you go to a manufacturer's website, they give the specs on their boats. Kayaks are not renowned for their cargo capacity, lol. You'll want one with watertight compartments fore and aft, accessible through hatches, and deck rigging to hold gear (and beer).
44 lbs. is pretty light for a canoe. My Perception is 14', 7" and weighs 47 lbs. The advantage is that it is far faster than any canoe and drafts a lot less water. I can paddle in 6" of water. Kinda hard on the paddle, though. :D

The canoe is my workhorse. Most kayaks can't compare to its weight to load ratio, but like you said it isn't nearly as fast or have as shallow of a draft as a kayak. I thought I found the boat I wanted, but it was only made one year, so I'm guessing there was some sort of defect in the design. I guess I just need to keep my eyes open, and order more kayak catalogs.

If you want to spend a bazillion dollars, you can buy a kevlar boat or, for about $1000.00, you can build your own from a kit from Chesapeake Light Craft. These boats are made from mahogany plywood and epoxy. The Chesapeake 17 is going to be my next project. It is a 17' expedition 'yak that weighs 45 lbs. It's reputed to be tougher than a kevlar boat and weighs about the same. You'll never get close to the cargo capacity of a canoe but this boat should be able to carry all you really need.
