I was wondering if any of you guys know of any good movies with an outdoors/hiking theme. I am going to show the movie to my biology class for our lesson on ecosystems and biomes. I saw Same River Twice the other day. It was a pretty good movie about solving life;s problems while rafting down a river. I vaguely remember a movie about hiking with Kevin Bacon and the little guy from lord of the rings in it, but if i remember correctly it had some pretty foul language. I need a movie appropriate for 10th graders. Any help would be appreciated.

Its been awhile but wasn't there a movie called 'And the Gods Must Be Crazy' or something along those lines.

Never Cry Wolf,, is also a good one.

Wasn't there a movie also about a S. American tribe trying to save the rainforest from a massive water dam development.

Himalaya - French made movie to document the annual trade trek of the Dolfus people of Tibet down to Nepal to trade Tibetan salt for Nepali grain.

Yak caravans carry the cargo the people walk.

Great shots of the Himalaya in the Annapurna/Dhauligiri region, and yes the paths are like that.

The Bear. A bit slow but it shows the life and death struggles of nature and how man sometimes interupts it.

Find Banff International Mountain Film Festival (Google?) and choose anything from the 'Mountain and Culture' category. Last year's movie about Tibetan children being smuggled out of China to study in India was fantastic. Good luck.

The Kevin Bacon/Merell Streep one wouldn't be appropriate. Bacon was a bank robber that kidnapped Streep's family because she had river guiding experience.

I wish some came to minde, but they don't

I think my favorite outdoor movie of all time would be Meatballs.

This is the movie that my grandmother took my brother to see when he was about 10, and then dragged him out of it because she thought it was obscene.

Dang, I was just gonna say "Seven Years in Tibet." Think I saw that in late 2000. It seems like it would be appropriate, plus a bit of international history in it.

I saw a little kiddy movie the other day I really enjoyed, not sure though if 10 graders would like it. it was sort of a comedy, but also a true story about the wildlife photographer... ahh, now I forgot the name of that damn movie.

anyway, it told about his life as a child and how the hiked through the us to take wildlife pics. Pretty cute and funny movie.

yeah, probably not a great movie for 10th graders though. my 10 year old loved it.

Kansas City still has a good drive-in movie theatre if you're hung up on outdoor movies.

Jeramaha Johnson with Robert Redford. ( it was Jeramaha something) That was a good one. Redford learns how to be a mountain man. I always wanted to try that buring hot coals and sleeping on them in the winter. The problem is that I know I would set my sleeping bag on fire.

The Grey Fox with the late Richard Farnsworth - about a stagecoarch robber who's released after 20 years in prison. Filmed in the Northwest and Canada. Not really focused on the outdoors, but its got great scenery, a good look at someone trying to adapt to the 20 years od changes he's missed while being in prison, and Farnsworth does a great job playing a 'gentleman' criminal.

treebait, "wild america", that was the movie I was trying to explain. Funny movie, but a true story. I think it's more for the smaller kid or the adult. Teenagers won't get it. :)
