Poor Phaedy, reduced to correcting spelling errors. You need to get a life little boy.

I just figured the man who claims to be holier than most would know how to spell biblical characters' names. Of course, that implies a level of intelligence that you don't seem to be able to attain.

Even the torture sequences seemed to go on and on until I just wanted something else

Do you generally enjoy torture scenes?

You new name fits you. Of course, it wouldn't without the "miss" part.

Pfft. Look who's talking.

I've wiped the floor with you on every issue we've discussed. You've got all the intellectual prowess of a third-grader and look like a man weened on fried chicken and lead paint chips.

I seriously was sure I had met you last week when I did volunteer work at the special olympics planning committee, but your look-alike was much too well-spoken.

The movie looks to open with 80 to 100 million dollars. Incredible for a movie that's not in English, and not released during a peak movie going period. Long live controversy.

"Critics worry
that Mr. Gibson's film, which has already been embraced by
Christian preachers as a tool of evangelization, will reawaken
old prejudices -- not that Jews are guilty of killing Christ,
but that Jewish liberals control the entertainment and media
industries and have imposed a secular, left-leaning bias on movies
and television." --New York Times editorial

"Mel [Gibson] is a real nut case. ...My question
to Mel Gibson is: How many million dollars does it look as if
you're going to make off the crucifixion of Christ?'"

Andy Rooney, satirizing his "conversation"
with God ;Gibson funded the making of this film because none of
Rooney's Hollywood ilk would have any part of it.

This is amusing
First off this one is for laqtis, the differance between JC and his followers and David Koresh and his followers, is that JC and his followers aren't going to H.E.L.L.

Phaedrus, the special olympics comment was uncalled for.

Who is to say that JC didn't wind up in H.E.L.L. for what he did? Has God told you that that is what happened?

Just because you believe in one and not the other doesn't mean that you are true in what you say. As always, "right" is just what ever you believe in.....all others go to Hell.

Very progressive of you.

sorry to burst your bubble, stanlee, especially since im the one that started this thread, but this thread was started 2/20. so the numbers arent quite that impressive anymore.

for all you biblical literalists who suggest, imply, or flat-out state that relativists want the bible to conform to them so they pick out the pieces they like and the ones they dont like they ignore, basically so they can justify or immoral lives, i also have a theory of my own. and that is, those who claim biblical inerrancy are too scared to face the possibility of any other truth. its comforting to be in the same boat with a bunch of ppl that know that all they have to do is follow the rules, and acknowledge certain tenets as historically true, mainly salvation thru crucifiction and resurrection.

i understand. facing the void, staring into the abyss is a profoundly horrifying prospect. who would WANT to believe n that? even if youre wrong, you can die happy, "knowing" your reward is imminent, as long as you convince yourself the dogma is absolute truth.

I had made a prediction on a Jewish site that this movie wasn’t going to spark Anti-Semitism but would spark a new wave of evangelizing. It’s already started. I went to see Butterfly Effect (I wish I had three arms so I could give it # thumbs up!) and when we left the parking lot had been attacked by missionaries! There was a flyer under every single windshield wiper for the local mega church…and of course the lot was TRASHED with litter from it.

On another topic…I was glad to see the Jewish response to the movie. While they are showing displeasure towards the movie they aren’t calling for mass boycotts and demonstrations either. The leading anti-missionary to the Jews group has started a thing called The Passion of Judaism (http://www.jewishpassion.com/index.html) in response. They are basically saying that Jews shouldn’t argue or fan the flames of debate but they should show their own passion for their religion and be prepared to tell people who approach them WHY they love G-d and why they love Judaism. This could be a good thing all the way around.

I have also decided that it is important for me to see this film because I think it’s important to make my own decisions about it’s content. If a person doesn’t see it they can’t make a comment one way or the other. I’ll wait ‘til it hit’s the $1.50 budget theaters though in keeping with the traditions of Judaism. LOL!

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- About 300 people of different faiths turned out to clean up a synagogue vandalized with swastikas and Nazi symbols on the eve of the Jewish holiday Purim.

So many people showed up Sunday at BMH-BJ Congregation, where vandalism had been discovered the day before, that people had to stand in line for a turn with a brush and a can of paint thinner.

"This is a place for everyone," said Doug Mix, who is not a member of the congregation. "That is why everyone is here. There are Christians, Jews, Muslims and people who are not religious. We all came out here because America is still America, and we don't tolerate this."

A custodian for the synagogue discovered about 10 markings when he arrived Saturday morning. Purim was celebrated Saturday night and Sunday. Police had not made any arrests by Monday.

Holocaust survivor Fanny Starr saw the graffiti Saturday morning.

"I was just shaking and broke down," she said. "All the wounds, the old wounds starting open again."

Rabbi Daniel Cohen said the vandalism may have been sparked by Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," which just finished its second weekend as the No. 1 movie in the country. The movie, which some believe wrongly blames Jews for the death of Christ, has been criticized as anti-Semitic.

Elise Zakroff said she was sure the film inspired the graffiti.

"What Mel Gibson did is terrible," Zakroff said. "It is happening all over. We are tired of anti-Semitism. All we want is peace."

Shortly after the movie opened, a Denver pastor outraged Jews and Christians with a sign outside his Lovingway United Pentecostal Church that read "Jews Killed The Lord Jesus."

He said the sign was inspired by Gibson's film and later put a sign of apology.

In 2002, anti-Semitic incidents rose 8 percent nationwide over the previous year, according to the Anti-Defamation League. Colorado had 35 anti-Semitic incidents.

'Protection squad'

Security detail hired for James Caviezel as execs think movie's main stars targeted

James Caviezel, who plays Jesus in Mel Gibson's blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," has reportedly been assigned a security detail to protect him.

"There are some crazy people out there and everything is being done to protect Mel and Jim from physical attack," a source close to executives of Newmarket Films told the London Express.

The paper said Caviezel, a devout Catholic, was being guarded by a "protection squad" amid fears of attacks by "religious fanatics."

According to the report, a mob of protesters has already screamed "anti-Semite" and hurled a bucket of lamb's blood at Gibson in a New York street. Charges of anti-Semitism dogged the filmmaker for months prior to the movie's Feb. 25 opening.
The Express reports Caviezel, 35, and his wife, Kerri, are protected whenever they leave home. Studio executives reportedly are concerned the film's principal figures could be targets for assassination.

Caviezel, who has 20 movies to his credit, told the London paper: "Sadly, any threats have to be taken seriously. It seems a terrible irony to me that this movie has spawned anger and violence. The idea that actors need minders because they portray a man whose mission was to spread the love of God is awful."

i think gibson had good intentions, but it is my belief that the general atmosphere of animosity is over-shadowing any good this movie has done. the road to hell, as they say......

i find it telling that christians are as gaga as they are over the film. if one was truly strong in their faith, you wouldnt need this movie to be thankful. i suppose it could be argued that it is a great evangelical tool, but from what i understand, theres not much to go on. you see his suffering without understanding why. i have as of yet to see it, so my opinion will be more informed when i see it

I find it interesting that the paper chose to print responses from people as to their reactions to the vandalism and how they are sure the movie caused it. I would have been interested also in hearing some of the responses of the parishiners when they realized that 300 people of different faiths came to help them clean up the ugliness. Hmmm....I wonder why that wasn't reported?

its speculation and unprovable, of course, but its not a big leap. centuries ago, jews went into hiding in fear for their lives because of the furor sparked by the original passion plays. and then theres this: "Shortly after the movie opened, a Denver pastor outraged Jews and Christians with a sign outside his Lovingway United Pentecostal Church that read "Jews Killed The Lord Jesus."

those are rather inept comparisons, bison and savage. the holocaust has created anti-nazi sentiment, not anti-german or anti-gentile. and belittling the concerns of ppl does not change the fact that it has happend, that jews have feared for their lives, that preachers in denver have put hateful racist signs at their churches. sure, these attitudes may be less now than in the past, and maybe the case is being over-stated, but there shouldnt be ANY of this mess.
StormBringer

But the problem here is that you get Christians going to see a movie about an important part of their religion, they see the movie, they see that there is no anti-semitism in the movie. Then they come out and see people protesting. Now since they know that the movie was not anti-semitic, they think, "well that can't be the real issue for the protesters." So they think "well what is their real motivation... "Well they must be protesting against my religion in general..." Now there's a problem. I'm smart enough to know the difference between a religion, and a few idiots who just don't get it. But even knowing that, when you see a group protesting and they all have something in common (being Jewish), it feeds a stereotype... In the back of your mind you start to think... These people are against my religion. And the more that stereotype gets reinforced the more people are going to beleive it. I know several people who have made comments recently that I don't think they would have made before this controversy... and it has nothing to do with any idea that Jews killed Christ... they don't understand why certain Jewish people are protesting against a movie that is not in any way anti-semitic.

this is so complicated its a mess. the context that one has to keep in mind is, christianity was originally thought of as not a separate religion, but as another branch of judaism. the gospels were written at a time when rome was in power, so the gospel-writers couldnt tell the truth about what really happend, and to save their own necks, demonized the jews rather than hold pontius pilate and roman politics accountable. so in that way, the gospels were anti-semitic by necessity. in this day, most reasonable ppl will see the story as condemning (that might not be the right word) towards mankind as a whole and not just the jews. unfortuneately, not everyone is reasonable. hence, passion play inspired lootings and killings in the middle ages, and hitler in modern times. so i dont think ppls fears are unjustified, regardless of gibsons intentions. just because he didnt mean anti-jewish sentiments, doesnt mean ppl wont take it that way. and it doesnt help that his father denied the holocaust and mel staunchly refused to comment on it. many ppl believe that the apple doesnt fall far from the tree.
