Some Pics For Your Head
I did a cool dayhike today. I started at an old RR tunnel just downstream and across from my stomping grounds, and took the RR grade to the next large tributary and hiked up a ridge to the top of the river valley and hiked the edge back. Aside from the RR grade, I bushwacked the portion up across and back down. It was pretty tough getting down because it was so friggin steep, slick and just plain sick, but I made it and have pics to prove it...and here they are.

On this map The tunnel is located in the southward-pointing river gooseneck directly south of Rockland, PA.

That is soooo close to where I'm from! Looks to be 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours north.

I Wonder About This Place Sometimes
Keeeripes, man!!! What did I even make a photo ablum of this trip for if noone wants to even look at it. It's like this thread has too much to do with hiking and not enough stupid BS to grab folk's attention.

That looks like a nice hike. I always like hiking PA.'s old RR grades. Lots of history and the narrow gauge RR grades make for nice mountain biking too.

I was backpacking in the Smokeys once and the Trail started out going through a real long tunnel.
Cool pics Tom!

"I Wonder About This Place Sometimes."
A great hike and great pictures.

No need to wonder! After this, please don't clutter up this site with hiking stuff. BTW, weekend evenings are usually very slow here.

Cool pics. I can certainly see where crampons would have been useful.

Don't despair, Buddur, there are some of us who really appreciate efforts such as yours. Just hadn't gotten through to the actual trip threads last night. Having Buddurdog in some pics, such as the waterfall, is really nice for scale and "action."

Man, that looks like a fun hike. And the pics are well composed. The dog gives things perspective on size. Buddur is a very good photographer. Thanks for some great pics. I would also love to see what it looks like in the summer. Maybe I can go out there for a hike sometime.

Finally! Great pics Buddur. I always enjoy your photos because you have a unique perspective of things that many others (myself included) miss.

Photo 20, Light (and a dog) at the End of the Tunnel is truly special.

btw - I can't bellieve how much snow you still have on your side of the state. There is practically nothing here.

There's still a lot of snow up here. The XC skiing and snowshoeing is still hanging on in the mountains, but the weekend is supposed to be warm so it may melt after that.

we're suppossed to get another 1 - 3" tomorrow. I was hoping to get out this weekend without snowshoes. Does anyone know the trail conditions on the Alleghney Front trail or anything in that area ?

wow
I know this tunnel/area really well, I spent many a summer living directly across the river at my parents cottage.

I even remember when I was (very) little when the road was still a railroad.

Just Post On This Thread And...
I live nearby and hike the area across from Kennerdell frequently, jj00.

If you ever think you'll be in the area, and want to do a hike, I could suggest or even join you for a hike.
