as you all know I got another bird whom I have named SEQUOIA

Native American for Giant Redwood Tree

I noticed the first night he was having problems climbing up the cage. i guess I just figured he was not use to it. Last ngiht treebeard was cleanig out the cage and I had a really good look at him. He is the most breath taking creature i have ever seen. But I noticed his feet were just not right. I compared them with trees bird and I relized they are deformed. You might ask how I did not notice this at the Bird farm. It was very hard to see his feet, he was sitting on the perch.
he still wont let me touch him which is very natural.

Has anyone had to deal with something like this? Its breaking my heart. He has to fly just to get to a upper perch. its a real struggle for him.

one of my bird's foot was deformed when i got him... it was nothing though. he's fine and gets around just like as if he had a normal foot.

Maybe he'll just adapt- you know, like a 3-legged dog?

Which reminds me...we had a parakeet when I was a kid, who spent a lot of time out of his cage. One day the porch door was left open and he flew out and perched on the neighbors rain gutter- just above a robin's nest. The mother robin was up on the roof and swooped down and just nailed the poor parakeet. He hit the ground and just laid there- we thought he was dead. I scooped him up and took him home and he crawled back into his cage. I think he learned his lesson.

Sounds like too much inbreeding in that birds' family. Generally, animals with such defects are put down very soon after birth.

Not to talk economics here but at the very least you are entitled to a refund or a different bird. It's a standard practice among reputable breeders. The painful part is that you already have an emotional attachment to the bird.

What you really need to ask yourself and your Vet is will the deformity seriously impact the birds quality of life.

If it will then you have a very hard decision to make.

You also might want to do a little research on the breeder and their reputation. A reputatable breeder will do what they can to make you happy.

Good luck.

it was a impulse buy.

they only offer a 48 refund. passed that already

it would kill me if i had to put him down. so far its hard to tell if he is in pain. his life has gone through a big change the last 72 hours.

RETARDED: slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress

DEFORMED: distorted or unshapely in form

BALES: Middle English, from Old English bealu; akin to Old High German balo evil, Old Church Slavonic bolii sick people

Bullcrap. That alone tells me that they aren't a reputable breeder. The ASPCA might want to know about them. Unfortunately there are people out there who knowingly mass produce animals with serious health problems and then pawn them off on people like yourself who grow to love the animal and then you have to deal with the emotional turmoil of deciding what to do in the best interests of the animal who has by now become a member of the family.

Once again, I say bullcrap. You've been preyed upon and I'd talk to the ASPCA or whomever holds authority in your area about it.

Took a breath
Ok the last post assumed the worst about the breeder.

So lets give them the benefit of the doubt.

At the very least call the breeder and explain the issue to them. The 48 hour thing might only be in place to keep people from impulse buying and bringing back a perfectly healthy animal.

maple, you'd most likely know if the bird was in pain.... i've been raising and training birds since i was 15. if the bird is in pain from a deformity, it wouldn't be nearly as active as you depicted the bird to be. still, i'd like to see a picture and i'll really be able to tell you when i come up there next friday and take a look at him : )

If you can return it what tdo you think the store is going td do with it? You know already don';t you? They will make fun of it and then gaaack. Its OK to make fun of the retarded though isn't it so you don't care about that. But what about the gaaack part when the retaredded bird goes to meet its fmaker? Your not going to send your retarded bird back to the store for a gaaack-ing are you?

Why don't you just get it a littel helment and reserve a seat for it on the short yellow bus.

How does a pet store euthanzise a bird anyway. Do they feed it to one of the cats?
