I'm having trouble accessing Trail Talk. I can go anywhere else on thebackpacker with out any problems at all, but when I try to access Trail Talk about 70% of the time the page comes up with a bunch of html like junk with an add or two showing. I've tried resycronizing my webpage and I've checked to see if I'm allowing cookies. All that checks out and I still can't access Trail Talk easily. It's frustrating. This has been going on for a couple of months now.

Any solutions?

Are your security settings setup to be extremely restrictive in Internet Explorer? maybe they don't like the bulletin board type pages?

just a guess, i dunno.

No. Most are set to medium security. I tried setting them to low security but it didn't help.
Thanks

I've noticed TT pages frequenty come up blank lately, and nothing on the box has been changed. Hitting refresh doesn't work, I have to go back to the previous page then try again from there/

I've had that happen a couple of times treebait, seems like my popup blocker kicks in at just the wrong time and blocks both a popup and stops the page from loading - usually though refresh works.

It happens when popup stopper is disengaged as well.

I've noticed that threads take a long time to open sometimes. I hit stop then refresh and they normally open up fine. Probably the gerbil running on the wheel that runs the network lost a footing.

Sounds like one of matt's ads is a little buggy again.

Matt was the one who recommended my checking my cookie settings and the syncronization stuff, but other than that, there have been no other offers of solutions from him.
I had this happen with another website I frequent and the problem was in their settings. They made a change or two and fixed the problem. I wonder if it has something to do with windows xp?

Anyway, If you all email Matt and tell him you have the same problem, maybe he can come up with a solution. With just me pestering him, he is bound to think it is something wrong with my computer setting only.

Thanks!

I use XP and haven't had any problems at all lately.

It was hanging up a while back and it was one of his ads. I'm sure he'll see this thread and work to figure out the pronblem.

I use Windows XP and have not had any problems other than when the site is down or cindy_lu puts in HTML code that makes SQL error messages start to appear. Are you sure it's not a DNS server problem on your end somewhere? DNS resolves hostname (the letters we type as the address) to IP address. IF DNS does not have to resolve hostname to IP address, the DNS server issue is moot. To determine if you have a DNS problem, the next time you type http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk" in the address bar of Internet Explorer, change "www.thebackpacker.com" with "65.208.102.74" Do not include quotation marks. If this works, but the hostname does not, you have a DNS problem.

Use the "X."
I had trouble last week, but it appeared to be in the internet. I stopped at the cable office(Bright House) for Road Runner. They ran a check and confirmed that I had problems. They had someone there within two hours. He found most of the outside cable connections to be faulty and replaced them. It has been runnning good since then. Another workman came out yesterday and checked things again, did some additional replacing outside, corrected the ground connector and never disturbed what was running on my computer.

Sometimes loading all the extras that come with TT takes a little time. After the string and/or string list appears, I run faster by clicking on the "X" to stop the page loading. All the extra goodies that Matt attaches are not always needed. This trick can be used on almost any download material since the printed information usually appears first before the pictures, icons, on-page-ads, etc.

I'm not sure about the problems people are talking about. Violin probably has it right and an ad is causing a problem. I don't run pop-ups on Trail Talk, so that should be ruled out. Most of my ads are run through third-party companies, so tracking down one particular ad can be hard to do. If you are having a problem, see if you can tell which ad is loading.

Hay Ski,
I tried your IP solution and it did not work. I get the same html looking gook about 9 out of 10 tries and then I finally get on, and then it does it sporatically from thread to thread or even on the same thread if I update the thread.
Today most of the adds html stuff are showing Latta outdoors. It seem to stick on one add type. Tuesday it seemed to be the Leatherman adds that came up all the time.

Another question is: Why does it do it sometimes and not others?
I'm stumped.

BS,
I am curious about the Leatherman ads because I turned those off last night. I wonder if your ISP is using some sort of cache or proxy that is messing things up. Who is your Internet company?

Well, at least we know it's not a hostname resolution problem.

Matt, if you want, I can copy and email some of the gook that I am seeing when the page tries to come up.
