Check out the Santanoni trip Buddur's got posted! What's he trying to do to us!!!

C'mon Caribou Chef, sign it up - we're bringing inflatable boats and SCUBA gear just in case!

I was thinking the same thing. I think I remember Gremlin saying he was going on the Wind-o-rama trip in Wyoming, but he was taking an extra week to drive out.

We can't have a trip to the Santanoni Range without the crazy canuck.

That was pretty damned good, Jamie.

I didn't fish once this year, but I used to be an avid angler.

Wait a minute, I visited JohnnyWlkr and fished with him.

I am giving my ex and her boyfriend my fly tying gear on permanent loan in an exchange for a brand new alpine climbing rope. I am allergic to fur and feathers and after setting up (20 minutes) and starting to tie I want to sneeze - which would be a disaster.

I run away, sneeze repeatedly, then probably touch my nose which sets it all off again and once I've calmed down, put everything away.

Lo these many years ago, I got in touch with a fly fishing club in Montreal and went to their fly tying workshop (free). I got a book from Orvis and bought myself a Thompson vise and just got better with practice.

After developping asthma and allergies, I became less and less interested in tying (the inhaler gives me shaky hands).

Fly fishing and fly tying are actually very simple activities despite all the BS about them. Fun, too.

hey gremlin, do you ever use skins for your skis?

any suggestions?

i've heard mixed things about the cheap strap on/no glue ones

Yup, I use the strap-on's I bought from Black Mountain(?). They're US Army surplus. I use strap-on's because use my skis for backcountry travel and wanted the simplest system.

I used them on the Vermont Long Trail one week-end last year on an outing with the Montreal section of the Alpine Club of Canada. I was surprised at how well they worked and how they didn't come loose. On the flats I just took them off and glided along.

Serious backcountry skiers use glue-on's and keep them on all day. They will also spend hours arguing about nylon vs. mohair.

Mine are nylon and I don't need them for performance, just traction. They might be hard to find, though.

do you ever put them on backwards to help stay under control when going down steep narrow trails?

and on a whole 'nother topic:

i've been looking into the wind rivers.
i read that you would take the shuttle bus from SLC to pinedale next time you go to the winds. any ideas on getting those last 20+ miles from pindale to the THs ?
sacco

Dunno, taxi?

No I never thought of putting them on backward. Normally, you just keep them on the right way and they slow you down enough.

I have had the skins for years, but used them first last winter. In my opinion they should bring back strap-on skins for people like me who are not into performance ski-ing.
Gremlin

What impressed me most was that they straps and skins stayed tight. I had thought I'd keep having to adjust them. I must repeat that they're not for performance, just getting round.
Gremlin

understood. i'm just looking for something light, quick, and easy to throw on for the steep ups and downs.

after looking into it and talking with others, i dunno about that shuttlebus idea.

looks like it'd cost $100 for a round trip ticket from SLC to pinedale. then you still have to get back and forth from pinedale to the TH.

a rental car should only cost about $100 a piece if you split it up among a few people.

How are things north of the border Doug?
lumberzac

Okay.

The main issue I'm dealing with is a huge hole under my house. I live in a one room school house (Rockburn School, No 10) that was built in 1830. In 1999 I dug a well and brought my pump and pressure tank into the crawl space under the floor and the pipes tend to freeze where they pass through the rocks.

I've installed insulated piping and am waiting for the plumber to re-adjust the pump (I think I need a new control box) before I can re-fill the earth and put in forms to pour in concrete where the hole is.

I had to drop out of Lumberzac's trip which I was really looking forward to and feel bad about letting him down.

Gasoline prices are insane and I get gas now in Chateaugay, NY when I pick up my mail there.

We are in a legal strike situation and yesterday then secretaries walked out and school was closed till noon. I went in to Montreal and got my Gabel hiking poles repaired - which they did for free.

It looks like I'll have to postpone my high school boys' rugby exchange to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne because of pressure tactics.

The good news is that the village pub has lots of Newcastle on tap.

I'm looking forward to hiking with you guys as soon as the hole is plugged (can't wait for FYAO).
