of a girl, her too heavy backpack, and a pair of..
SCISSORS!

So I have this really heavy backpack - that I love regardless because it's comfy and is great for holding all that extra winter crap. But. It's really heavy - close to 6 lbs. I've looked at other packs and saw that my bag is heavier on average of at least a lb.

So? What's a girl to do?

After careful analysis of the bag and field testing...I decided to hack off 90% of the extra little things (they get caught in branches any way).

Weird? Stupid? Time will tell. But hey...it's now almost a lb lighhter :)

Twinks, you have to much time on your hands. Go outside and take a walk, go to the gym, go prowling, go drinking, go find a bf do something besides cutting on your gear.

i've heard of that before, makes sense, especially if you never use the stuff that you cut off, and you save a pound

Hey, just don't whack your straps too short! Put on all your cold-weather stuff, then check how much excess length there is.

You might also look into cutting every other bristle out of your tooth brush.....

lol

I only took off the removable (and heavy) top & its matching straps and buckles, a front flap thing, and one bottle pocket off. Truth be told these items annoyed me and got in the way while backpacking.

Ewker's mean - he won't let me play with my gear...

MtnSteve - toothbrush? that's what bark is for ;)

Twinks, I wish you lived in Florida. I'd almost kill to find a girl that thinks it's cool to fiddle with gear and set up a new tent in the living room.

Twinks, I'm not mean.
I can understand sitting up the tent in the apt or laying in your new sleeping bag for the fun of it.
If you really want to cut weight look at what you take on each trip. Figure out what you used and what you didn't use. If you didn't use it don't take it next time. You will get more weight savings that way than cutting on your pack.
You have made at start at it by buying a lighter weight tent and bag now go all the way with your other gear.

ROAM! I just got a new el cheapo tent today in the Bargain Cave at Cabela's. Had to laugh at your comment. I was just going to grab my tape measure and see where I have a 7'-6" by 7' spot... or what I need to move to make one... TO SET THAT PUPPY UP!

Plus, I want to weigh it. It's 6 lbs. 3 oz. "carry weight," a 3-person. Lots of mesh, full fly, 2 doors, 2 vestibules, just 2 poles. It's a Rokk Horizon 3.

ONLY $45!

I asked the salesperson about the return policy, cuz I said sometimes tents are heavier than it says and this one was reaching the limit of what I would take. He said, one month, return it for store credit. GOOD ENOUGH!

I had seen these tent, probably the 2-person model, before and thought, "hmmmmmmmmm" then.

ANWAY, LET'S COMMENCE TENT SETTING IN THE LIVING ROOM!! lol

Ewker, don't you understand that, that was what she was doing? She took a look at her pack, and decided to leave the parts that she didn't use behind, and a pound of weight savings is a pound of weight, no matter how you decide to lighten the load.

Plus it leaves more room for Sambuca and Snickers.

Lizs - congrats on the awesome tent price!

Cool lizs! Hell I might as well set mine up and sleep in it tonight. I guess my neighbors would think I was weird if I set it up over by the lake in our complex - it would probably violate some rule they have here anyway.

It would be nice though - it's such a nice night out.

Post a report on your thoughts of the tent for me. I'm kinda shoppin for a three person tent for me and those two annoying short people that live in my house. Been looking at the SD Clip 3, but let me know how you think the Rokk would do.

So far, NOT HAPPY!! It appears to weigh more like TEN POUNDS! EEEEEEEEK!!! I think the tent might be going back. It would be great to use without the vestibules in the summer with so much mesh. But geez. I packed it all back up. Probaby to return.....

Exactly, Roam Around. They said since it was in the Bargain Cave, it could be returned for a merchandise credit. I'm gonna call them tomorrow and say it was totally misrepresented, both the weight and the fact that it showed the tent on the box had clip-locks for the poles, not the mesh sleeve it has. (They had one set up with the mesh sleeve, but, umm, I don't think I saw that with the rain fly on it. ;-P) Anyway, it's FREAKIN 10 POUNDS! I will encourage them to weight it.

MISREPRESENTATION OF A PRODUCT!

you ignorant slut, you will save a lot more weight by going thru the stuff you take on a trip than by cutting a lb of material off your pack. That is what she was doing by getting a lighter weight tent and bag.

LOL! Sometimes cash is not readily available for those purchases. So you do what you can. I've read that is a trail hint before, getting rid of stuff on your pack that you don't use.

i cut a few inches off my pack straps a few years back..and now i reallllllly regret it...didn't f anything up...but some of the straps are a hassle now...i suggest leaving them along and getting a lighter pack over all..and doing what ewker suggest...rationalize your gear..not butchering your gear

Then try not to get fat so your straps become too short.

Pack Hacking Disclaimer: No actual straps were harmed in the process of cutting off extra weight.

Can't we all just get along? LOL

Trust me - if you knew my pack the way I know mine, you too would have hacked off the same worthless accoutrement.

Let's all "simmer" down!
