head on collision rocked my worldView Messages“DUDE! That totally sucks! I'm glad your OK. I would have freaked on the 911 bich myself too. I hope the other dude will be alright too.” 10:25:05 PM 3/01/04 “when i went to get some more stuff out of it, they had hauled it to the chevy place to asess the dammage. three GM certified had just pried the hoop up with a giant crow bar thing. they were all going....whoa, look at that..they said i took one hell of a smack. like the cop said, i hit a brick wall at 70 mph. anywayzs, were standing there and they're asking me all about the wreck. i told them the airbag didn't go off . they couldn't explain it. the bumper was actually peeled under and touching the underside of the front tires. then i noticed the fuse box , i said hey, the airbag must have a fuse, maybe it was bad. i looked and was like DOH! one guy said it mioght be a thing where they take them out for shipping a new truck, and it never gets put in. that's why i said to check youres. the 911 lady was ....horrible. i complained violently to the cop that worked the wreck. we had a bomb scare at the highschool just like 2 days before my wreck. some kids had found a cell phone and dialed 911 on it. it was from another area. even a cell phone that doesn't have a service will dial 911. the3 cop said that must be why. vut she should have asked me right away. i was very to the point with her and she's asking me how do i know the other guy has head injuries......even his ears were bleeding and she's douptin it....and during a snowstorm...” 10:41:04 PM 3/01/04 “by the way , i started to help the dood but he was flopping all over adn i just tried to calm him down .... he was yelling and moaning untill they closed the ambulance door. the cop told me he would be writing the guy several tickets. no insurance. no permanent residence. he was kindof a shady lookin dood. like a strungout crankster. this sounds like a terrible thing to say, given the guy's horrible injuries, but it was very tramatic for me, untill the permedics got there, it was really bad...hard to swallow...reality slapping you in a horrible way. it kinda affected me somehow, made me cautious, alert, fortunate...took 3 weeks to wear off ... now i'm just another schmuck with a really nice ford. the other maint guys all hate me cause i got the coolest truck. i didn't have any say so in what kind i got. i was happy to get anything. i was amazed at what i got. i have a really good job. it's hard sometimes but it's just right for me.” 11:44:58 PM 3/01/04 “ok with 911 my guess is the help was on the way and she was seeing if you were ok, some people get out of there car and start running around when they have neck injuries and stuff and do much more damage so they normally try to see what is going on. Well glad to see that you;re ok, seat belts really do save life.” 12:12:48 AM 3/02/04 “Stratdewd, you dodged more than one bullet in this accident. You just may not have realized it yet. A few years back, three friends of my cousin had a relatively slow speed accident in a pickup truck. They blew a stop sign at a "T" intersection, went straight across and dropped the front end squarely into a ditch. All were wearing seat belts. Two of the three had no injuries. The kid in the middle died. Not from the impact of the truck hitting the ditch. The 80 pound bilge pump they had just repaired was sitting just inside the tailgate and it came through the back window of the cab at about 20 MPH.... You say that drill case did a number on the tool box, 'eh? Heavy items carried in pickups should be placed against the cab, and secured. Glad you're OK and glad the other guy survived. Sometimes life is a hard teacher; test first, then lesson.” 12:16:59 AM 3/02/04 “oh yeah strider, i thought of that right away. it slammed the toolbox so hard that the front wall of the bed was peeled away from the sidewalls. also, the entire bed hit the cab section hard enough to make a crease on the backside of the cab. that thing would have taken my head off.” 1:43:06 AM 3/03/04 “Mama always said: "Son, never drive with an unsecured load!"” 8:34:47 AM 3/03/04 she did? “the dood behind me said my back tires aactually came of the ground and "debris" went flying everywhere. the other guy's spare tire ended up 100 feet away. also, all of his windows were shattered.” 9:08:48 AM 3/03/04 “Actually, no, she didn't, but that's what I always say when people complain about me tying down even the smallest load. Inertia, it's all about inertia. I was very lucky once. I was driving my car (a Chevy Chevette) on a highway on my way home from work one day, when a redneck in a pickup truck pulled out in front me from the median. He had in the bed of his truck, an unsecured engine block. No doubt his thinking was that it was so heavy, it would just stay in the back of his truck. Well, when he peeled out to get in front of me, that engine slid right out the back of the bed (tailgate down of course) and into the roadway in front of me. I had about 100 feet or so at 50 MPH (about 1 and a third seconds) to make sure the right lane was clear and get over. I still remember that engine rolling down the pavement, parts flying off of it. Unfortunately, with traffic the way it was, I have no idea what happened after I passed the engine, and the redneck, who pulled over into the median, no doubt scratching his head and wondering why his engine block was sitting in the roadway and not in the bed of his pickup. This isn't a dig at you, strat, just an observation. After that incident, I tie down everything...” 9:17:19 AM 3/03/04 “glad you're OK Dewd. How rocked are ya? Turn into a liberal?” 10:04:45 AM 3/03/04 “lol jo....NAWT! yeah bit, i'm usually too rushed for that. you wouldn't believe alll the crap that goes in me truck. i just tie myself down.....” 10:52:29 PM 3/04/04 “HOLY CRAP! I missed this thread. I'm sure glad you're okay, Strat.” 11:32:10 PM 3/04/04 “BTW, are you properly insured?” 11:35:34 PM 3/04/04 “thanx phaeddy. it was my company truck. i was coming home from work. it's all good. i got a new killer one!” 11:53:31 PM 3/04/04 “I saw that. I don't mean the truck, though. What if your seat belt had broken and you'd ended up unable to work for a year or more?” 11:59:27 PM 3/04/04 “they provide me with full coverage so no matter what happened, they would take care of me. no worries. that othe guy has plenty. psysical therapy for a year, no coverage. he's gonna need some dental work too....” 8:29:20 AM 3/05/04
