Our solar system is believed to have originated as a huge spinning cloud of gas and dust. As it spun, the cloud flattened out into a disk. The sun is thought to have formed in the center of the disk, and the Earth and other planets are pictured as forming in orbit around the sun. Because the original cloud was spinning, the Earth and other planets are spinning, too.

All objects we know in the universe are spinning -- sometimes slowly -- sometimes very quickly. When clouds or stars collapse, they spin faster -- just as an ice-skater twirls faster as he brings in his arms. Our sun spins about once in a month -- but if you could shrink the sun, it could spin up to hundreds of times a second. As for the Earth and other planets' rate of spin, that might have been determined by several things. One factor is how much mass a planet has. Also -- early in the history of our solar system, some planets were probably struck by large, flying chunks of debris, and that collision between worlds in space might have changed their rate of spin.”

What I came up with re: planetary rotation has many similarities to what Chuck posted. It's amazing how much variety there is in the solar system as far as how different planets behave... spinning backwards, sideways, etc.
