Nude Hiking Day

“The only time I was on the AT on Nude Hiking Day was last year near Mt. Rogers. It was bitterly cold, like a late fall day, and no one I saw was interested.

Another interesting story. I was waiting at Mount Rogers Outfitters for skully and G00SE to show, and some old dude pulls up in his car, gets out, and starts talking to those of us who were sitting out front. He quickly turns the conversation to Nude Hiking Day. We sorta just ignored him, other than to say we thought it was too cold. Very odd.”

“When? Where? Is there alcohol involved?”

“Keep your pants on noboby wants to see that.”

“The Summer Solstice is Nude Hiking Day on the AT. Very few people participate, and those that do are mostly male. Some women do participate, but usually only for a short time on portions of the trail furthest from civilization. Women have to be more careful, you know...”

“hmmm. yea the dirty old man contingent will be out in full force, im sure”

“It is supposed to be **DUNE** Hiking day, y'know everyone takes a little spice and rides giant worms.

“I was hiking up St. Regis Mountain one summer when we came upon a couple with only sun hats on. They were sitting on a rock outcropping, facing away from the trail. Which was the least they could do since it looked like they might have been in there prime during the 20's!”

“Yes, 1920's. Or maybe they were really young but spent too much time in the sun?”

“I hope when I'm in my 70's or 80's that I feel comfortable enough to sit on a rock outcropping, wearing a sunhat, sans clothing. Heck, I think it's great that they were even out on the trail.”

“June 21st is Nude Hiking Day.”

“Ski, I don't know how old you are, but it's likely when you're in your 70's or 80's that it will be legal to do that on a city street...lol...”

“You know, that was the first time I've ever been on the AT on nude hiking day. The weather wasn't exactly conducive to nudity, what was it maybe 50 at the warmest part of the day? And WINDY.

I just can't imagine it would be too comfortable though, even in warm weather. Chafing issues. Maybe with fleece or shearling covers on the pack harness and hipbelt. And of course there's the dreaded "waffle back" from external frames.”

On the second to last day of a canoeing trip up in the Quetico, we encountered a lot of wind while trying to paddle accross one of the larger lakes. We were making our way to an island in the middle of the lake not knowing is it had already been taken. As we rounded a point, we saw to old people BUCK NAKED stand up and run.

This was the scariest sight I have ever seen.”

“Into our face. We were paddling against the wind.”
