which is better?
I'm gonna have two kids with me most of the time. One could handle a single kayak fairly well but the other would have to ride tandem, she could assist in paddleing though.

I'm thinking I need a solo kayak and a medium size canoe.

I'm curious to hear other thoughts though.

There are some really nice tandem kayaks with a 3rd seat/cargo hold in the middle. Sass and I used one in FLA over new years. It was an amazing boat but big, nearly 22ft and cost $3500.

I would recommend a canoe if costis a concern.

Quiet water = canoe.
Whitewater = kayak.

ya cost is a matter to deal with. I've seen some fairly affordable models. I want something that I could feasibly do a two or three day trip in Everglades with.

A nice 17ft 4" canoe will run about $1000. Not cheap but it'll be moderate light and big enough for 3. The kids can take turns paddling and horsin around.

No whitewater, it'll be all bays, Everglades or calm river.

Roam, we hope to kayak the wilderness waterway through the everglades. It looks to be a nice route. I spoke with some guides while don there, we got the maps. Now we just need the time,LOL.

That doesn't seem like a bad idea to me. In general you can carry a lot more weight in a canoe compared to a kayak. The flip side is the kayak will be faster and easier to paddle. With both, you could buy a recreation kayak and carry all the gear in the canoe.

I currently have a 14' radisson canoe, which has worked very well for me.

That's exactly my line of thinking lz.

Birch - I hear ya man. If only I had more time to play with. Dadgum job keeps getting in the way of my recreation plans.

I agree on the 17' canoe.I've been all over in one. Have a smaller royalex for very small headwaters & a solo kayak for white. Overall, I choose an aluminum 17'. Hold lots of gear & a couple kids easily. Younger kids could handle a canoe easier than a kayak.

Perhaps a compromise, it'd be a little of both but the attributes would always be a little less. A two person, one cockpit kayak.

One seat would slide to the middle for solo adventures. Yet two adults would fit in it, maybe three if two are small children???

It would be almost as fast as a single kayak, and carry almost as much as a large canoe.

Just a suggestion submitted for your consideration.

Rent first, buy second. Do lots of looking at your outfitters in the region, especially those with experience setting folks up for the type of paddling you plan to do.

And keep in mind that kids grow up.

I've got both solo canoes and solo kayaks which can do flat water to mild whitewater. The kids have liked paddling the small kayaks, while my wife and I enjoy the versatility of our canoes. The latter are by a Florida maker -- Mohawk. Check them out, they make a nice variety of canoes for quite reasonable prices.

Canoe. Do the Gulf Coast of the Glades.

we do both. we have a 17' coelman--$400 at walmart. i got it used from a pawn shop for $175, with paddles and these seatbacks that hook onto your chair.

our solo kayak is killer! last year, my then 8 yr old was jammin all over the place with it. no problem. white water or still, they're both great. doesn't matter, just get on the river already!

one more time...
I have this kayak and it's great for me and the grandkids. They like to lean over the side and play in the water and it doesn't tip enough to bother them. Plus they usually fall asleep and the seats work well for that. Canoes are tippy and I think kids (or the ones I know anyway, neices and nephews) are more comfortable in kayaks. I sure am, especially with kids on board. :)

I used to have a small Manatee kayak that the kids loved. They took to it quickly and could easliy handle it solo even if they never paddled before.

The Old Town looks pretty good twiggy. Good size and space - stability will be a big plus - nice price too.

I like that I can load and unload it solo with no problem. I could fit both the tandem and the Manatee on top of my car, and the tandem works as my solo as well.

I may get another kayak for my own solo camping adventures, and I'd like to get another Manatee sized one again (mine was stolen or I'd still have it).
I can't remember how old you said your kids are Roam, but a small kayak for the one who can paddle alone would be a blast for him/her.

The bigger one is 12. Last summer we rented kayaks and did a guided tour for about 4 hours in the Indian River Lagoon. He paddled a small (12 ft me thinks) solo and did great. Took him about 5 mins to get the hang of it.

Me and the 9 yr old took a tandem that was very similar to the Old Town you linked.

I need to go rent a couple different types for a day each and try it out.

[Beaten plug] I like the fact that my Radisson has ore locks and it is light enough that I can load and unload it from my car with no problems what so ever.
