If we were having higher unemployment during those times, let's say like 6.5% or 7%, then it would be accurate to say the 5.6 was good. Also, my question would be: Do we take into concideration population growth when getting these figures?”

“Well, a quick overview of the DoL, shows that in 1/04 shoed that we had an unemployment rate of 6.7 percent and it slows falls to the 5.6 percent during Feburary of '96.

Now, in Jan of 2000, we had an unemployment rate of 4.1% and now have gained to as high as 6.0% and presently back down to 5.6%.

This was done real fast, but it looks like to me that the media might just reporting the facts here, and not being biased. Seeing as though during the times listed, during Clinton, unemployment fell, while during Bush, it has risen. Me thinks the media is taking it in to context, if you will, the current conditions and comparing it to the "good times", which you can't help but do. I alos noticed that population grwoth does paly a factor in such that techincally, more people are employed nowadays than they were back then, we have a bigger population.”

“The DoL and individual state unemployment numbers are so screwy they can be interpreted in any number of ways:

The DoL unemployment rate only considers those who are LOOKING for jobs; anyone who has become discouraged and given up looking is NOT included.

If you look at the DoL stats you'll also see it takes longer to find a job if you're unemployed - 6-9 months is average (from personal experience I'll say that number is optimisticaly accurate).

It doesn't consider anyone who got laid off and could only find a job with less pay (underemployment) in their stats.

On the plus side, the unemployment # doesn't count people who start their own businesses.

Also remember the economy has to create about 150,000 jobs per month to keep up with the number of people entering the workforce; last month it only created 21,000, and January's # was only about 50,000. And those numbers will be constatly revised for the next 18 months as more accurate data is received in Washington DC.

Wacky? You bet. Best probably to focus on the economy in the area of the country you live in.”

“Just I had thought. During the early 1990's (ie Bush I) in the Detroit Metro area, unemployment was at 8 percent, then peaked at 10.5 during Jan of '91, went down a littel , then peaked again in Jan of '92 at 10.3%.

During Clinton's years, the highest it ever was, was in Jan of '93 and that was 8.5%, from then on, we were going on around 4.5 or so.

From Jan 2000 (Bush II inagurated), we have steadly climbed to our recent level of 6.7%, and peaking this past July at 8.3.

So, it seems that in my area, everytime there is a Repub in office, unemployment rises. The big numbers in January could of course be directly linked to the layoffs from the Big Three, which happens and is common, however, please note that during Clinton, those number were almost half of what they are now.”

BUSH EXPLOITS PHOTO OF DEAD BODIES, DESPITE BAN

As the nation headed for war last year, President Bush "clamped down" on the
media, extending and expanding a controversial policy that banned reporters
from photographing flag-draped caskets of soldiers killed in combat (1). The
White House said the policy was enforced to "spare the feelings of military
families." (2) Yet, in the very first television advertisement of his 2004
campaign, the president has blanketed the nation's airwaves with an image of
"firefighters carrying a flag-draped body" from the 9/11 wreckage at Ground
Zero (3).

The hypocrisy of preventing Americans from receiving a "reminder of the toll
of war" at the very same time the president exploits an image of a dead body
for his own political gain has caused an outrage among victims' families
(4). Chris Burke, whose brother Tom died in the attacks, said, "Using my
dead friends and my dead brother for political expediency is dead wrong.
It's wrong, it's bad taste and an insult to the 3,000 people who died on
Sept. 11." (5)

The president's actions have also raised new credibility questions because
he previously promised not to exploit the 9/11 attacks. Speaking of 9/11 in
January 2003, President Bush told the Associated Press that he had "no
ambition whatsoever to use this as a political issue." (6)
