Hey .... Tilt,

aren't you in Georgia? I kind
of felt like it was an unfriendly
gesture when Atlanta
proposed tapping into the
Tennessee river for fresh
water to water their lawns etc.

I had heard you Georgians
thought Atlanta had grown
big enough. What do you say?

Problem solved. I have successfully practiced birth control since 1976. Very shortly Snake Eyes Labs, in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO) will release a global plan for retroactive birth control. All I need is your parents consent.

Jmitch, I couldn't agree with you more when you said, "the ultimate problem is that there are just too many people in the world."

When the population of a species increases beyond the carrying capacity of its habitat, the usual result is the species ultimately crashes. Unfortunately, before it crashes other species that depend on the same resources crash first.

I'm in Augusta. The Friendly Folks in Atlanta will be going after our water supply next.

I think we are pretty adaptable species to just about anything Mother Nature has or will throw at us. Science and technology will either make us or breaks us. Modern day corn and grains have come a long way since humankind began cultivating. I believe we already have several strains of drought resistant crops in use.

I never like that one saying about acres per cow vs. acres per human because you can't control the pop. of humans like you can the cow in a free world. That 5 acres to feed 50 peeps will create more peeps in due time. And won't that again tax the eco-system by requiring more land usage for human consumption.

FYI,,, did you all hear about the Taiwian gov has lifted the pop. control mandate because they are fearing a shortage of 'workforce' workers. They have over 4 mill peeps there.

Are we not living untop of a earthly furnace,,when I hear about geothermal places like Iceland and how they have harnessed that energy I wonder why we haven't done the same when possible.

Hydro-power,, there is water everywhere,,I'm not talking dams and generators all over the place I'm thinking more along the lines of 'ol'mill' style,, water turbines,, 'jetty' like, to generate power. A series of small, less intrusive stations dotting the major rivers,, these would all work in conjunction with exsisting locks and dams that would also be converted to generate power.

I think its doable if the right minds come together. It would surely employ some people and provide clean energy.

atlanta sucks....literally...it sucks...water from everywhere...then dumps the cost of the $4 billion dollar sewer upgrade on taxpayers who werent even thinking of living here when the problem first began in the mid 80's....atlanta is drawing from alot of water sources up north but the southern part of GA was drawing from the GA/FL/AL aquifer....and people were saying that they were using too much water in south GA...i mena come on there is online about 1 million people tops in south GA....too much debate over usage of it...never gonna satisfy everyone...

"I've lost count. Is this the third or fourth thread about that same DoD report?"- Tilt

No, it's not the same report....that report talked about riots, nuclear war, drastic temperature drops and oil shortages.

This one mainly talked about grain shortages.

Either way....we're perhaps screwed.

So the other thing was the end of the world and this was just.... bread and cereal?

Oh No, we're not screwed at all.... The Western Fuels Association, the National Mining Association and the Greening Earth (sic) Society assures me that all the extra CO2 in the atmosphere will be GREAT for plants.

According to the Western Fuels Association Inc., Burning Coal May Be Good for You!

http://www.wvhc.drw.net/VoiceJun00/Misc.June00Voice.htm

(Excerpted from the Environ. News Network)

Western Fuels Association Inc. (WFA) filed suit in April against Turning Point Project, Friends of the Earth, Earth Island Institute, Ozone Action, Rainforest Action Network and the International Center for Technology Assessment in Wyoming federal district court, alleging commercial defamation under the Lanham Act.

The WFA claims its coal supply businesses have been damaged by a December 13 full page ad in "The New York Times" that advocated elimination of coal use in electricity generation. The suit claims that the ad promotes the commercial interests of companies that contribute to the six groups, including British Petroleum, which has made substantial investments in solar energy, and 3M Corporation, another supporter of alternative fuel.

The WFA suit claims the ad makes false and misleading factual representations regarding the effects of carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of coal and other fossil fuels, and an alleged human-induced overheating of the earth’s atmosphere.

"They are attempting to portray electric generation from fossil fuels as a significant health risk while, in fact, the opposite is true," says WFA manager Fred Palmer. He explains that the ad uses apocalyptic predictions concerning future climate that have no scientific support. The goal is to cast coal in an "unwholesome and unfavorable light" while promoting a competing product, renewable energy, for electric generation, claims the lawsuit.

I don't know how good coal can be....I mean there were alot of respiratory diseases during the "Industrial Revolution"...which used huge amounts of coal at that time.

I had a few friends that went to China (Peking and Shanghai) a few years ago....after a few hours walking on the street...when they blew their nose...black soot was coming out.

Coal isn't half as bad as drunks & felons.
The Harvard School of Public Health determined that soot and noxious chemicals emitted by coal-fired electrical generation plants cause about 15,000 premature deaths annually in the United States. By comparison, 16,000 Americans are killed each year in drunken-driving accidents and 17,000 are victims of homicides.

I believe back in the Bad Old Days we burned much more anthracite coal (cleaner burning, lower sulfer) vs. bituminous, but I wonder what the tonnage was. Then, we had many many small point sources instead of the fewer, much larger sources we have these days.
