They appreciate your support! They have enjoyed the Shenandoah. It was cold today but they were able to slack-pack it again today- for the last time from VA. Tomorrow they'll be back on the trail with their full packs. Baume 66- MM was sorry he missed you. Sir Pete- he'll try to catch up with you in the gap. happy trails-” 10:27:40 PM 5/03/04 “"but they were able to slack-pack it again today-" aHA! so thats their secret. so far ive only slacked the .2 from springer summit to springer shelter, and from fontana shelter to fontana dam” 6:51:50 AM 5/04/04 “Mrs MM, did you get my email about a goody package??” 5:25:42 PM 5/06/04 “Now that's a good idea. What are some ideas of goodies that can pack well, but they won't run into on the trail?” 5:49:29 PM 5/06/04 “Howdy all, MM here. Just a quick howdy as we're resting a few minutes at Bears Den Hostel. Nice place, wish the time worked out so we could stay here. Things still going a-okay. Doing the "roller coaster" today. I'll post a better update when I have more time. Thanks to everyone for your continued interest. I'm looking forward to getting into the north the next few days. Places I've never been before... Peace. MM.” 11:15:28 AM 5/08/04 “you're gonna love it. you have some of the most awesome hiking ahead of you. keep on.” 12:04:15 PM 5/08/04 “ ![]() 12:17:59 PM 5/08/04 “Hey, hey everyone. MM Here. Pulled into Duncannon this AM. I'm hangin' out at The Doyle now, waiting on a ride to the store. The hiking is still great, albeit a little hot lately. HArpers Ferry was cool. That's a neat little town. We got our pictures taken at the ATC headquarters. We were numbers 38 and 39 for the season, if I remember correctly. The hiking since Shenandoah has been less difficult and the scenery is rolling by. We came through Boiling Springs yesterday, another cool town, and there was about 15 straight miles of flat, farmland hiking. I didn't complain a bit. We passed Pine Grove Furnace State Park in PA and the half-way marker on the AT. Very cool. The store at Pine Grove was closed so we had to wait until Green Mountain store, 7 miles north, to attempt the 1/2-way 1/2 gallon. Thru-hikers are supposed to eat a half-gallon of ice cream in honor of reaching the half-way point on the trail. I downed it without a problem - Hersheys Moosetracks, 200 cal/serving, 16 servings, 3200 total cals in about 15 mins!! Mom got through about half of hers. There were some seriously nice shelters in the area, Quarry Gap and Birch Spring to be specific. Kudo's PATC. If you live in the area check them out on a weekender or something. Still meeting some fine folks and having a ball. The bugs are starting to bite and the temp is rising, but the woods are great. We've been watching the cicadas/locusts emerge lately. The change of scenery is really cool, watching the country change as we walk north. We passed a mature spruc/pine forest the other day, the first at uch a low elevation. I guess I'll be getting used to them as we continue north. I'm so excited. Well, better let someone else at the computer. Yall take care. More as soon as I can... Peace. MM. Endorphin on the AT.” 2:00:49 PM 5/15/04 “i was waiting for an update. your mom's page is only up top the 6th of may. good to hear your still clicking the miles off. thanks for the news.” 2:26:26 PM 5/15/04 “Way ta go Folks! Man -- that's an icecream headache just waiting to happen, LOL (just make mine a root beer float.... in a 2-gallon bucket!)” 2:26:52 PM 5/15/04 “Keep going MM your really rolling right along.” 4:11:32 PM 5/15/04 “I feel honored to actually know someone who has actually done the AT.. all of it.. and I know you will. :)” 4:54:45 PM 5/15/04 “Thanks for the update. So, how many of these 1/2 way 1/2 gallons will you be doing? I think I'd do one at every opportunity” 6:51:11 PM 5/15/04 “halfway!? damn! im only a quarter done. goddamn, man, youre flyin” 5:39:29 AM 5/16/04 “Nice report MM! Sure wish I was out hiking this weekend! Scott - nothing wrong with that man. Keep pluggin away!” 8:42:26 AM 5/16/04 “Nice job MM!” 3:35:31 PM 5/16/04 “MM-Glad to see you guys are having such a great time. I hate that I didn't get to go with you on the trail this year. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Keep it up. Binks” 12:28:25 AM 5/17/04 update from Mrs. MM “MM and Double Nickels have moved into NJ! They are in good shape and are still covering over 20 miles a day. They took their 4th zero day at Delaware Water Gap to reunite with their spouses. (yippee!) Then they hit the trail again. The infamous rocks and boulders of PA have caught up with MM. He is now in his third pair of shoes but is happy with another pair of Montrails- still a size larger than when he started off on the AT. Another sore spot in PA was the copious poison ivy. They covered a lot of ridge top in PA. Some climbs but mostly ridge since Duncannon. They did 25.4 miles to the 501 shelter which they thought was pretty cool. The shelter was a 4-sided wooden building with an 8 ft octagonal skylight. There was also a solar shower and 12 bunks. On the way to Port Clinton, MM came across a pristine grove of Aspen. They are really in the north now and are enjoying the new sights and northern lakes. Still not much in the way of wildlife but have been seeing lots of beautiful wildflowers. In Port Clinton, they stayed in a pavillion owned by a church. The church hostel in Del Water Gap is closed for renovation but a Ramada in town is in agreement to give a hiker rate of $42. (Having stayed there, I wouldn't pay more than that- reg rate 119-- but I'm sure it was luxury to the thru-hikers. MM and DN seemed to sleep just fine.) Thanks to everyone who has been tuning in. -Mrs.MM” 5:42:46 PM 5/25/04 “Thanks for the update. I checked DN's trailjournals today to see what was up. Man, they're moving along.” 5:49:14 PM 5/25/04 “yes they are. thanks for the update.” 7:36:02 AM 5/26/04 “Thanks for the update Mrs MM! It's wonderful following along through your updates and Double Nickle's trail journel. I'm so glad she's managed to keep it up!” 7:42:44 AM 5/26/04 “Thanks for the report!” 7:51:16 AM 5/26/04 “Thanks for the updates. They are moving. I haven't checked their journal for a while guess I need to do that.” 8:52:36 AM 5/26/04 “I knew it.. I knew it.. they are really really going to do it!!!” 10:43:28 AM 5/27/04 update “Hello, all. MM and DN are doing great. They are walking their way through CT now. They couldn't stay in Fort Montgomery because everything was booked up for the West Point graduation- so they just resupplied and kept hiking. Crossed over the Hudson River but it was too cloudy to see NYC from the trail. They stayed in the ballpark at the friary but didn't see any of the monks. They have had some cold nights into the 40's. MM has been wearing every article of clothing at night and has still been chilly. He is debating whether I should send him his silk liner or heavy bag again. All in all they are doing great. Mrs. MM” 5:04:33 PM 5/31/04 “do they have an expected completion date yet? they are moving along at a real good clip. thank you for updating so regularly. i enjoy hearing about their progress.” 9:34:02 PM 5/31/04 “man, they are flying! glad to hear about them doing good.” 9:38:15 PM 5/31/04 “Wow, they're flying. I checked DN's trailjournals several times over the weekend hoping for an update. Glad to hear the progress.” 8:50:51 AM 6/01/04 update “Hello, all. MM and DN are still cruising along in their final 1/3 of the trail. It took them 45 days to do the first third and 38 days to cover the second third, with a total of 4 zero days since they started. Since the last update, they hiked through CT. They enjoyed the ten mile and Housatonic rivers. They have hiked through some rain and have endured lots of bugs, but they are still enjoying the sights. They have seen several natural lakes which MM describes as beautiful glacial lakes and clear-- very different from the south. They are now in Vermont and they saw their first moose!! They were both very excited about that. such large animals. I wish I could give more details about the trail but I don't have many to share. Hopefully, I'll have more news next time. Thanks to all for your interest and support! --Mrs. MM” 11:24:30 PM 6/07/04 “thanks for the update. They are still moving at a good clip. I am still amazed that DN can keep up with MM. Good genes I guess” 11:31:39 PM 6/07/04 “In Vermont already!! Way cool! Even more cool they got to see a moose there!” 11:42:42 PM 6/07/04 “awesome!” 12:04:12 AM 6/08/04 “Great. Looks like they'll finish it no problem. I'm envious.” 12:19:47 AM 6/08/04 “If their lakes are clear, it sounds like they need more Red Clay up there, <G>” 6:29:17 AM 6/08/04 “Cool. I was looking at an AT map over the weekend and thought that they must be pretty far into Vermont by now. That's great.” 6:54:39 AM 6/08/04 “I hate meeses to pieces!!! Man o' Man...new land speed record?..lol” 6:59:16 AM 6/08/04 “THanks for the update! I can't wait til DN can finish her trail journal.” 7:21:58 AM 6/08/04 “I know it, I check that thing about every other day.” 7:41:00 AM 6/08/04 “My legs get sore just thinking of the pace MM and DN are keeping. Amazing.” 8:28:38 AM 6/08/04 Jump to Page << prev
