"Carter thinks that NK just started aquiring nukes in January of 2002."

Where'd you get that? It's so easy to knock down a straw man. How about what he actually said?

Former President Jimmy Carter said Tuesday night that an agreement he brokered 12 years ago for North Korea to halt nuclear weapons development is “in the wastebasket."

This means that he thinks the reason North Korea halted nuclear weapons development is because of an agreement from 12 years ago.

Carter contends the Bush administration turned its back on the deal and labeled the isolated nation part of an “axis of evil.”

In context (look it up if you're not sure what that means) this means that he thinks Bush is responsible for breaking that deal (the deal he said halted development) at the time he labeled them an "axis of evil".

He called them that in January, 2002.

I hope that helps. If you need further translation, try babelfish.

Please check back in the North Korea threads...they even admit they violated the agreement shortly after they signed it. They are Communist/Socialists they have never intended to follow an agreement. Hence the reason Jimuh got the agreement...without verification. Like telling the cop "I will stop speeding, if you stop monitoring my speed." LOL

I met, shook his hand, chatted a couple of minutes, and liked Jimmy back when he was campaigning in the student union at MSU before he won the Dem candidacy.

I was impressed by him and I voted for him several months later.

He had good intentions, like most Lefties, but could not govern. He turned out to be one of the biggest Presidental failures.

I think he has lost much of his mind today.

hey, what's the deal with Billy Beer?

Yeah, there were allegations by the US that Korea cheated and the Pakistani nuclear scientists confession supports the notion that there was some cheating. While both the Bush administration and North Korea have a history of giving false info about nuclear proliferation, I'd rather trust the Bushies.

But, even if the Bush allegations are entirely true. There were provisions and monitoring equipment in place in 2002. There were significant limits on what North Korea could do. The agreement still constrained their behavior. Until late in 2002, there were surveillance devices placed by the IAEA in place in North Korea. The Yongbyon reactor was shut down and monitored until late 2002. IAEA teams were there. Late 2002 to early 2003 marked the start of major and uncontrolled acceleration of the North Korean nuclear program.

So yeah, I stand by my assertion. There were major road blocks in place when the Bush team came on the scene. For all their tough talk and refusal to have direct negotiations, they let this one slip away. It went from SNAFU to FUBAR ont their watch.

LOL...right...stay with that.

From PBS

When North Korea disclosed in fall 2002 an ongoing clandestine weapons program, it fueled rising fears worldwide about the threat of nuclear proliferation. The secret weapons program in North Korea violated a 1994 agreement with the United States, further damaging an already tense relationship. This relationship is marked by periodic crises between the two countries, whose intense rivalry dates back to the beginning of the Cold War.

HENCE the violations had already happened in 2002 when the AXIS of Evil Speech was made...Was Anyone here alive during the Surrender A Little at a Time...agreements of the Carter era...the Soviets NEVER abided by them.

If history began in the '70s you might have something there, XLax.

It was the C.I.A. sponsered coup in 1953 that brought the Shah to power and started the mess that culminated in the "revolution" of 1979.

Regime change started decades ago. The new term is just a change of clothes. Dwight Eisenhower was president when the U.S. overthrew the popular democratic government of Mohammad Mossadegh in Iran in 1953. What was Mossadegh's transgression? He wanted Iran's oil to benefit the Iranian people. The coup brought the shah back from exile and put him on the Peacock Throne. What ensued was 25 years of tyranny and repression culminating in Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic Revolution. The coup in Iran was a pivotal event of the 20th century. Virtually all Iranians know about it. Yet most Americans haven't even heard of it. The U.S. professes that it supports democracy in the Middle East yet when there was a democratic government in Iran the U.S. destroyed it.

MarkO has a good point. Iran had democratic elections in the 1950s and the CIA helped the Shah take over again and helped him maintain a brutal regime. So - if you are going to blame Khomenei on American policy, you have to look further back than Carter.

BTW - given the loony partisan nature of your source XL, it would be nice to see some support for his claims.

LOL...MR Tough guy
Music: the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.....

JIMUH strolls down a dusty DARFUR street....infront of him are security for the Sudanese Government. The goal....to bring the typical CARTERESQUE Tactics of TOUGH GUY to a troubled region.

So the man who singlehandedly faced down a Killer Rabbit years ago places his tough guy image on the line.

The 83-year-old Carter walked into this highly volatile pro-Sudanese government town to meet refugees too frightened to attend a scheduled meeting at a nearby compound. He was able to make it to a school where he met with one tribal representative and was preparing to go further into the town when Sudanese security officers stopped him.

HE FIRED BACK IN TYPICAL TOUGH GUY

"We're going to anyway!" an angry Carter retorted as a crowd began to gather. "You don't have the power to stop me."

I can imagine the scene....JIMUH squints...he drools (hey he is too old to chew) and limbers up his fingers (most likely getting ready to pull his famous 'Drop trou and let em have at me" routine that helped make Islamo Fascisim a threat.

then he replies

I'll tell President Bashir about this," Carter said, referring to Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.
(Translation: I am going to call my Mommy and she will call your mommy and BOY will you be in trouble.)(LOL)

OH yeah...the result.....

Carter later agreed to a compromise by which tribal representatives would be brought to him at another location later Wednesday. But the refugee delegates never showed up.

HAHAHAHAAHAH....this is hilarious....the FEEL GOOD solution...they faced them down...(forgot to buy them a Coke and sing Kumbahyah) and Mulsims are still raping girls at will, still starving and killing at will....and here is the bet. "WITHIN 1 year" JIMUH will proclaim one of the evil dictators a GREAT Humanitarian.

Some folks like to constantly spout off about history, but sure don't seem to grasp many of the facts. Carter went to Venezuela to observe a recall election. He went to North Korea to meet with Kim Il Sung to try to convince them to stop processing nuclear fuel. I believe he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Accomplishments...you mean like making Libya stop nuclear production, you mean like ending the terror regime in Iraq that had thumbed it nose at the rest of the world for 35 year...you mean like a growing incredibly powerful economy that has survived direct attacks, natural disasters.....

JIMUH' got the Nobel Prize...whooptiedoo...so did Yasser Arafat...heck Kissinger got it (granted that was the first time someone got a medal for LOSING a war).

Carter got it so the libbies in the Nobel Committee could thumb their noses at the US. What exactly did he DO to get it? NOTHING..he allowed North Korea to go just as they had planned, he did not a whit of anything to make a difference.

ofcourse to libbies...its the "good intentions" of libbies that matter, not the real outcome.
