Compact Sleeping BagView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 24 of 24 messages posted.
“Just wondering what sleeping bag most people use for a 4500 cu. pack? I can't seem to get a sleeping bag in that pack without it taking the majority of the room. I've used fleece bags but if there's a chill in the air that doesn't work either.” 9:11:27 AM 3/09/04 “i have the same problem” 9:11:57 AM 3/09/04 9:18:25 AM 3/09/04 “i have a compression bag, it's just that my bag is big. i need to get a down bag.” 9:21:09 AM 3/09/04 “I have the same problem, I want to use a smaller pack for weekends. Right now I only have a huge pack for expeditions. But I'm gonna need a down bag if I get a smaller pack.” 9:23:48 AM 3/09/04 “You need to get down with it.” 9:24:55 AM 3/09/04 “cute, real cute” 9:26:28 AM 3/09/04 “I just ordered this bag for the exact reason you are talking about. Western Mountaineering Ultralite” 9:49:35 AM 3/09/04 “I went the cheep route a few years ago and bought a Quest Helix from Dick's Sporting goods. Not as small as a Western Mountaineering, but it was only $40 and I can fit it in my 3000 cu in pack with a weekends worth of gear and food.” 10:03:09 AM 3/09/04 “I have to leave my bag unstuffed at times to take up volume in my 3000ci pack. Depending upon the weather I use wither a 2oz overfilled Western Mountaineering Megalite or a Moonstone Stratus 3D.” 10:03:46 AM 3/09/04 “I have the Mountainsmith Wisp 30* bag it packs down so small it doesn't look like a sleeping bag. If I put it in a compression sack it might just vanish. I paid $179 for it on sale it only weighs 1lb5oz's I think it is 750 fill. The stuff bag is about the size of a Nalgene bottle.” 10:21:14 AM 3/09/04 “Here's my compact bag, supposedly good to 25 degrees. It's down and squishes to the under the size of a 2-liter bottle of pop. Pretty affordable too. I got it for under $200. Probably more like $170 or maybe less. Also nice, it's got a finish to resist water. Read about the Kelty Quasar Ultralight 25 here” 12:25:56 PM 3/09/04 “OK, I see it goes to the main page. Then, on the left, click on "10 to 25 degrees" and then on "Down" It says: Durable Teflon water repellant finish Deep three-dimensional hood Straight box baffle construction Hip-length, two-way locking zipper Hip-length zipper draft tube keeps the cold out Ground-level side seams prevent heat from escaping Differential cut eliminates cold spots Zippered foot vent allows ventilation FatMan and Ribbon drawcords Sleeping pad security loops Internal liner loops can secure Kelty liners Hang loops for drying 800mm waterproof/breathable microfiber shell Quasar Ultralight 25 Specs Our most technical, weather-resistant bag available in an ultralight package. I wonder if the other 2 down bags will stuff down to a 2 liter bottle of pop? I didn't care for the homo orange color.” 12:37:55 PM 3/09/04 “http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/bagtable.cfm Too lazy to do the link. This is a comparison of all the sleeping bags Backcountry sells. Including Exped, Golite, Marmot, Moonstone, Mountain Hardwear and more. Cool 'cause it's all in one place. Good luck.” 1:14:32 PM 3/09/04 “4500ci is pretty big. What bag can't you fit in there? With a compression sack, I can fit a synthetic 20F Cats Meow in my 3100ci Ghost and still have room to put almost everything else inside the pack. Granted, I'm not one of those "take everything including the kitchen sink" hikers.” 1:22:47 PM 3/09/04 “My Osprey Aether 60 (approx 3600ci) fits my 20F TNF Cats Meow without a compression sack. I stuff it inside the small red nylon bag that came with the sleeping bag. The only thing I don't put inside the backpack is my sleeping pad and sometimes my camp shoes. I agree with hubcap, what are you taking that takes up that much space? Get a compression sack for your sleeping bag. I also agree with must hike, get the ones that compress top to bottom instead of around the round sides.” 2:39:38 PM 3/09/04 “my slumberjack super guide 30+ will roll to about 7 x 16" w/out a compression sack and weighs under 2 pounds i believe. fits real nice in a 4300ci kelty trekker. cheap too, though i got it for christmas. so now of course they come out with a redesigned model for 2004...” 2:44:26 PM 3/09/04 “Kelty LightYear 25 degree for 150 bucks or the Kelty lightyear 45 degree for 109. Both of those are great or look at a BIg Agnes bag. Not bad prices either compared to the western mountaineering bags.” 10:52:48 PM 3/09/04 “Would someone hand to me that baggie on the table? Thanks.” 11:09:37 PM 3/09/04 “UP, I got my Kelty Quasar Ultralight 25 at some online store. I searched for low prices at the time I bought it.” 11:34:08 PM 3/09/04 “Or the Campmor Down 20 degree bag. The guys over at Whiteblaze seem to like it. Doing the math, with 1# 3oz of 550 fill down it should have the same ammount of loft (i.e warmth) as my Western Mountaineering Megalite. The Megalite is a solid 30 degree bag, and I'm a cold sleeper and can use it into the 20's.” 11:54:34 PM 3/09/04 sleeping bag “I also have a Mountainsmith Wisp and it does pack very small and weighs almost nothing. I have found that I have more room if I don't use a stuff sack. I just out it in the bottom of my pack. If stuff sacks are packed full they are harder to pack around and take up more room than if you just put the sleeping bag in the bottom of the pack.” 5:01:56 PM 3/11/04 “http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?productId=12117476&storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1 wow what a copy/paste...thats what i got with my christmas gift card...seems good tested it in january when it got down to about 25...well in my apartment anyways...windows up, heat off, fan on....worked greatwas actually a little warm...only got down to about 35 in the apt though....” 6:06:46 PM 3/12/04
