“HUBBLE'S DEEP VIEW OF THE UNIVERSE UNVEILS EARLIEST GALAXIES Astronomers today unveiled the deepest portrait of the visible universe ever taken. A one million second long exposure taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) may reveal the first galaxies to emerge from the so-called "dark ages" shortly after the big bang. The new image, called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), should offer new insights into what types of objects reheated the cold, dark universe about one billion years after the big bang, when stars first started to shine, about 13 billion years ago. The image reveals some galaxies at distances until now too faint to be seen even in Hubble's previous faraway looks, called the Hubble Deep Fields (HDFs), taken in 1995 and 1998. http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2004/07/” 1:46:53 PM 3/09/04 “I guess I should have included Jesus, Satan and Gummi Bears in the title somehow.” 2:44:19 PM 3/09/04 Gummi Bears, Jesus & Satan “Cool, Tilt. I wasn't able to look at the images. Due to high demand for the story the site is being mirrored in 3 locations. I'll try again later tonight when I'm home. My connection is faster than the shared T-1 at work.” 2:58:39 PM 3/09/04 “I downloaded the 300-something jpeg. They've got a couple that are over 100 MB!” 4:23:44 PM 3/09/04 “Lovely!” 4:31:51 PM 3/09/04 “I didn't see Jesus, Satan, or Gummi Bears, Tilt, what were you thinking of?” 4:32:51 PM 3/09/04 “You just need to stare at it a while longer..... OK - Time's up! How's About...... WORDS YA GOTTA KNOW Like anything else, astronomy has its own jargon. Newcomers quickly run into terms like "arcsecond," "4th magnitude," and "right ascension." But they're easy to learn. Here's a quick rundown of the most important astronomy terms you need to know. http://SkyandTelescope.com/howto/basics/article_510_1.asp” 8:50:23 PM 3/09/04 “I love new discovery - there is so much we don't know. If I have seen further it is because I stand on the shoulders of the HUDF. Not quite the same ring.” 9:15:42 PM 3/09/04 “One thing I read said the tiniest red dots in the image might be within 400 million years of the Big Bang... So we'd be seeing things as they were 13.6 billion years ago(?) That would be over 97% of the way back to the beginning.... whoa....................” 9:29:18 PM 3/09/04 “I freaked myself out, LOL” 9:34:38 PM 3/09/04 “wow. what's beyond this? so cool!” 11:15:30 PM 3/09/04 “I don't know if I wanna know...... LOL” 11:20:46 PM 3/09/04
