The BLS publishes six different measures of unemployment, U-1 through U-6. U-3 is the "official" unemployment rate.

See U-4 through U-6 and how they include discouraged workers and those working part-time that would rather be working full-time?

You might also notice that these alternate measures move pretty much lock-step with U-3, so for comparison purposes, U-3 is superior as it has the longest history.

If you'd rather focus on the broadest measure, U-6, note that it has declined 140 basis points from a year ago - even better than U-3.

You might also look at Table A-12. Unemployed persons by duration of unemployment. See how the number of people unemployed for over 27 weeks has declined from last year?

There's really quite a bit of good news there if you care to look objectively.

WASHINGTON (AP) � The number of people seeking unemployment benefits plummeted last week to 352,000, the fewest since April 2008. The decline added to evidence that the job market is strengthening.
