Got the 1st jetboil stove in and this thing rocks. When they get released i April I have about 200 coming in. I'm pretty excited about it. I'm going to test it out next weekend as if I haven't tested it out here at the store enough already.

Cool Deal.

I've been waiting for these to appear... and for somebody to do an evaluation, (hint-hint)

There was some speculation about this stove on the 'Other Site'. One report said it took over 4 minutes to bring the water to a boil, as I recall.

Yep...
Mine takes over 5 mins. to boil a liter (at 4600 ft.)but it takes 1/2 of the fuel to do it. I boiled a liter with 1/4 oz. of fuel where my other stoves used 1/2 oz.

I guess if time is a concern then get another stove. If weight is a concern then this is the stove to get.

i'll set the watch to the boil times later. I know a cup takes 35 seconds without the lid on.

I'll do 2 cups and then 3 cups and then a liter and report back.

The jetboil is interesting.
I still havn't decided if it's for me.
The atractive thing is it's efficiency. It boils water using very little gas. The heat transfer rate into the water is very very good. For a long term hiker, this efficiency might make the total package fairly light.

One thing I don't like is you can't use the 'pot' without the jetboil burner. If you do run out of fuel, you are screwed. The only thing it's good for them is a drinking cup.

Hey Binks!!!
You keep saying this thing is light.
The jetboil website doesn't list any weight. This makes me question it.

What is the system weight of this thing?

Geeze guys. You worry too much about performance, weight, functionality. You should be buying this thing because the Backpacker gear issue said it was good and therefor it's the new "in" thing to buy. Stop yappin and buy the durned thing! Everyone on the trail will ask you about it and you'll get all the attention on the web pages posting all your cutting edge info on the Jewboil.

Light Stoves
The last alcohol stove system I made came in at 6 ounces for the complete kit and boils a pint of cold water under 7 minutes using less than 1 fl oz alcohol.

3 cup Antigravitygear.com cookpot and lid
StoveStomper windscreen/potstand
StoveStomper pot grabber
StoveStomper alcohol burner (mini 'pepsi')
8 fl oz fuel bottle

Now this system is light, strong, and cheap as dirt.

Photon website

The Photon is a squeeze light

Photon II has a steady off/on switch

Photon III has seven modes: three levels of brightness, fast and slow strobe, SOS blinker, and one that turns off after a minute (great for finding keyholes).

They are little wonders.

I have some of those little LED lights from Princeton Tec. I have one on my key chain and keep one attached to my backpack as a backup light source if I were to have a problem with my headlamp. My wife saw the one on my key chain and now she wants one. My kids want them as well I guess I'll just have to make a trip to Campmor. Oh the things I go through for my family.

Stove in Action

Stove in action 2

You can see in this picture I made it from one single regular pepsi can. It relies on JB-weld to make a nice seal at the top and bottom, and along the seam. It's quite light when compared to the already ultralight double wall design.

It's a LED, some wires, and a switch. It's not rocket science. the price photon charges for that thing is outrageous. From my experience the cheap copies work just as well as the overpriced photons.

Yeah, those StoveStomper stoves and stove set-ups RULE!!!

Alright, I think it's OK that people point out that bbinks has a store. It's just the fair thing to do. Bbinks, you better put a disclaimer on future rave (or bad) reviews. something like, hey, take this with a grain of salt. I own an outdoors store. (but maybe that means something, too, as far as using products)

lol...

I mean, people did give the adventure pack people crap, as well as the one unknown person really hyping it. They asked, so you work for the company??!?"

See, bbinks may be one of our own, but not everyone who reads TrailTalk knows that, nor do they know he owns a store.

OK.... way more than enough said on that.

did I mention that StoveStomper stoves and stove sets rule???!?!?

OK THEN!!! LOL!

I mixed up some JB weld. Using a toothpick I filled in the "valley" on the top peice and bottom peice that the center cylinder fits into. The center cylinder actually has a bit of overlap... perhaps as much as an inch. I liberally covered this overlap with JB weld to make a good seal. After it dries I used a drill bit and made some holes. You can fill it using the mouth of the can. I splash a little bit of alky into the priming ring by just tipping the stove over a hair. Some will leak out of the jet holes and into the simmer ring. The beauty of this design is that it requires a pot on top to acheive stove pressure. When you are done boiling you can take the pot off the top, it loses pressure and you can just blow the stove out saving and unspent fuel. the cavet of this design is that it requires a pot on top to work ;) I'll make anohter tonight and take better pictures of the process. It's super simple to make since it does not require some of the difficult cuts a traditional double wall pepsi can stove requires.

DeoreDX - How's the JB Weld seal along the bottom holding up long term?
JB Weld is good stuff!
I use JB Weld to make SURE the halfs on my 'pepsi' stoves do not come apart, but am a little leary of using it for a high temp seal for boiling alcohol.

I used the regular JB weld which is rated to 600F and it's held up well. I've primarily used that stove as a backup stove to my Snow Peak Giga cannister stove I'll take on the group hikes, but it's been beat to heck and has held up well. It makes an awsome backup stove because it does not require a pot stand and is self contained and only costs me about 4oz in my pack including 3oz of fuel.

I used the regular JB weld which is rated to 600F. If you think about it, Alcohol vaporizes at ~175F, so as long as there is alcohol at the bottom of the stove, and I doubt I acheive super high pressures that would drastically raise the boiling point of the alcohol, the bottom seal (most important to for keeping the alcohol in the stove) will not see temps close to 600F and should not fail. Once all the liquid alcohol is vaporized the temps on the bottom will be able to start to rise, but once all the alcohol is vaporized the stove will not burn much longer. The side seal on the seam is helped by the fact that it too is on contact with the alcohol and the alcohol should serve as a hear sink. Now the JB weld above the burn holes where liquid alcohol is not present will see drastically higher temps then the bottom. How high I do not have the expertise to say, though as an engineer I'd love to find out. Aluminum melts at ~1200F and the JB weld's rated to 600F so there is a broad window of temps the JBweld can fail (or at least passes it's temperature rating, who knows if there is a saftey factor built in) before the stove just melts itself. The stove does not give off any odor that would make me think the JB weld is burning in any fashion, unlike some of the cheaper putty type epoxies I tried using at first. I beleive building another is on order so I can start some destructive testing.
