Those guys would seem moderate to a neo-fascist.

Personally, I think it's high-larious the right complains about the media. I mean, the media handed Bush the office. The media let Bush run, unchecked, into Iraq.

Man, the media is the Repub's best friend!

i have today off, so i stayed up wayyyyyy too late last night Nigal.

the media? hell, we only think we are voting our choice. very incredibly rich men way up top, make our decisions for us. they decide how various politicians are potrayed, what gets into the news, how things are spun. everything including the politician is bought and paid for long before we get there. who knows what the man is actually like, eh? if ever there was a real one, he was probably killed off.

feeling cynical today,

Why should it be any different over there than it is here? How often do you hear good news reported that happens in our own country, much less overseas?

Here's some good news from Iraq:
The first Iraqi flight surgeon team is officially in place and working. ( My brother trained them and helped them set up their program)

There are many small steps being completed everyday. We can't really expect the press to report on them though. Small steps make for boring news. Death and destruction are much more sellable.

Sass I have to totally agree...I still wonder how the citizenry would view say any assistance and long term program if viewed in the negative light of the Media.

I hearken back to a 1947 issue of LIFE magazine that said we had "Lost the Peace" in Germany and the whole rebuilding was a total bust.

Let's take a look at why they need that flight surgeon team...
roseymonster
2:58:51 PM
4/11/07

They need it for the exact same reason we do here Roseymonster. IF they ever stop fighting there will be babies born who are rushed to bigger, better hospitals, plane crashes and fires, train wrecks and storms that produce patients who require airlifting for immediate care.
(And if they don't stop fighting there's the car bombings and general senseless destruction to try and put the pieces back together after)

For those who know much about the post-WWII history the fact the reports about "losing the peace" in Europe in early 1947 highlight the failure of the Bush administration. Truman and his administration heard the criticisms and took them seriously. There were lots of problems and we were not on a course to overcome them. There were no Carl Roves or Dick Cheney's to bash the naysayers into smithereens, question their patriotism or accuse them of failing to support the troops.

Instead, the administration - learning from history - took steps to avoid the kind of festering wounds and economic miseries that lead from WWI to WWII so quickly. The administration stepped up its game, in mid 1947 the US and Western Europeans worked out the Marshall Plan a massive influx of aid and support - a multi-lateral effort of massive aid in a well thought out, though imperfect, plan and execution.

People willing to name and discuss problems aren't always doom and gloomers, often they are people pointing to problems in hope of solution. They are people saying we can and should be doing something better.

Simple minded references to unfulfilled worries about failure in the post-WWII occupation were used again and again by right wing blogsters as incantations against the necessary critical thinking.

Historical references should be used to promote thought and critical thinking, not to prevent it.

"There are many small steps being completed everyday. We can't really expect the press to report on them though. Small steps make for boring news. Death and destruction are much more sellable"

It is BushCo's fault for loosing this war.

Nothing more can be heaped on the media.

Shifting the responsibility to a third party is a cop-out for any leader.

One tenet of war is to ensure public support.

This is where BushCo has failed.

This country is not on a war footing at home.

We drive around everyday, living our lives as the President said we should.

Continuing an American 20th century Capitalistic fantasy is what has burried us presently.

Who cares how many entrants in the race there are, Stove. Freakin Gary Coleman ran for gov of CA...

The reality is, the Repubs don't have a prayer of winning the next election because:

a) They completely hosed the United States for the next 100 years in every way imaginable.

b)There's not one candidate who relates to the Republican voter base, which is apparently Joe-Bubba from Armpit, TX e.g. the current duffus sitting in the Oval Office.

c)Again, who in the Rebub lineup has prayer? I mean, McCain was about the closest the Rebubs had to capturing mainstream America and well, he's broke and gonna have to fold...

That is truly one of the more disgusting comments I've seen here in awhile, even for you, MarkO. It's OK if you don't like him, but a look at the facts instead of your putrid comments will tell you why Rudy is doing well in the polls:

Mayor of New York
In 1993, Rudy became the first Republican elected Mayor of the City of New York in a generation. Campaigning on the slogan "One City, One Standard," he focused on reducing crime, reforming welfare and improving the quality of life. In 1997, he was re-elected with 57% in a city in which Democrats outnumbered Republicans five to one.

Under Mayor Giuliani's leadership, overall crime was cut by 56%, murder was cut by 66%, and New York City - once considered the crime capital of the country - became the safest large city in America according to the FBI. New York City's law enforcement strategy has become a model for other cities around the world, particularly the CompStat program, which won the 1996 Innovations in Government Award from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

When Mayor Giuliani took office, one of every seven New Yorkers was on welfare. Mayor Giuliani implemented the largest and most successful welfare-to-work initiative in the country, turning welfare offices into Job Centers, leading to the reduction of welfare rolls by 640,000, or nearly 60%, to the lowest level since 1966.

Mayor Giuliani also took decisive steps to restore fiscal responsibility to New York City, reducing or eliminating 23 city taxes while turning an inherited $2.3 billion budget deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus. These reforms helped lead New York City to an era of broad-based growth, with approximately 423,000 new private sector jobs created in eight years, as business returned to the center of city life. As news of the New York renaissance spread around the nation and the world, tourism grew to record levels. Under Rudy Giuliani's leadership, New York City became the best-known example of the resurgence of urban America.

That's how SOME might feel, MarkO, but not "many". There is no single candidate, Rep, Dem or Ind, who is ever going to get 100% support from any group as large & diverse as NYPD.

But to say "MANY" feel that way is simply untrue... the excerpt below is from the NYT, not exactly a right-leaning paper! Maybe you should have some facts before you start throwing rocks, just this once? But the part that literally turned my stomach was your suggestion that he was "riding the coat tails of dead fire fighters", as if he was an all-time leading scumbag amongs humanity. Just because you may not agree with him politically is no excuse for you to be so judgemental, especially without any facts.

Their images are permanently etched in photographs after the fall of the World Trade Center towers, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and firefighters cloaked in the same gray dust. For months afterward, they stood together at funerals. Mr. Giuliani, in his eulogy, always asked for a round of applause to celebrate the dead firefighter’s life. It would be easy to assume, then, that Mr. Giuliani can count on the support of the 11,000 men and women of the New York City Fire Department as he runs for president. But that would not be entirely true. Interviews with more than 50 firefighters and department officers show a mix of admiration and disdain for the former mayor. Many firefighters praise his years in office, citing his success in reducing crime and his leadership after the terrorist attacks. Others harbor a resentment for what they describe as his poor treatment of the department before and after Sept. 11.
