1/2 oz Windscreen/Stove for AntiGravityG ear PotView MessagesHomemade gear ROCKS!!! “Half Ounce Windscreen/PotStand for AntiGravityGear 3 Cup Cookpot I just added this to my website. Complete set weighs in at 4.8 oz. and dirt cheap.” 10:03:46 PM 3/10/04 “Where can I buy one????!? HUH? HUH! ;-) HEY... LMFAO!!! I like the address on the webpage. LOLOL!” 10:13:35 PM 3/10/04 lizs “Remind me not to make anything else for you. ;-) Yea, I forgot the web address would be displayed until I got all the pages coded and then I just said "#$%& it,I ain't changeing the name of the page". Everyone knows I made this set for lizs anyway.” 10:26:31 PM 3/10/04 “The AntiGravityGear 3 Cup Pot is only $6.95. This pot is an excellent ultralight solo cook pot. Worth checking out. Their cozys are pretty nice too.” 9:37:35 AM 3/11/04 “Yeah, dubya, I was looking at that webpage and then wasted more time last night looking at links on ultralight gear to buy. And then I ended up on the Florida Trail Association site and the "Big O" hike. LOL... dang internet, anyhoo! Oh... maybe I callk ya "dubya?" ;-P” 12:44:47 PM 3/11/04 “I like it! If I may... May I suggest that you make four "half-holes" in the top edge so that if you do use it for a full size pot, the tent stakes won't roll off?” 1:36:01 PM 3/11/04 “..not a bad idea at all... half holes....and easy to make with a paper punch.” 2:02:19 PM 3/11/04 “I got the stove! very cool. Freakingamazingly small!!! About the holes, interesting idea.” 3:16:43 PM 3/11/04 “I idea about the half holes along the top edge would be only to use a full size 'Pepsi' alcohol stove rather than the mini stove I made for this set. A full size stove is much taller than the mini stove and that's why the tent stakes need to be moved higher up rather than using the side holes. I'm not sure the stand would hold a 'full size' pot and be safe. This stand is designed for the AntiGravityGear Pot or one with nearly the same exact bottom width.” 8:45:33 PM 3/11/04 “you could add a second set of holes higher-up, going through the doubled-up metal to further "pin it."” 10:34:41 PM 3/11/04 “another brilliant idea from my favorite windscreen artist..God, you're good....now, can you tell me how to sharpen my well-abused paper punch..LOL...” 8:04:12 AM 3/12/04 I have boiled water “Made a whole new stove setup, using the Heineken 20oz beer can pot, brand new windscreen and reflector made from a disposable turkey-roasting pan, and a new pepsi can (really Simply can, but who's counting?) stove. This new stove has the jet holes in the side of the can instead of the top edge, so the pot can sit right on top of the stove without a potstand. I didn't time it, but it did bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil before it ran out of fuel, lol...” 12:16:06 PM 3/13/04 “Yea for bit! A new stove maker is born! Better watch out, or you will have many many diff ones around in a short while! Have you visited WINGS yet?” 3:11:09 PM 3/13/04 “omg...now Bit is going to go buy a bunch of beer and make everyone a stove........ good excuse to drink beer!!!!!!....hey I could help!!!!!!” 3:15:01 PM 3/13/04 “Oh this was my 4th stove I think...I made three between last night and today. The biggest problem I'm having with this type is snuffing it out when I set the pot on it. I'm thinking if I get a little hardware cloth, made a circle out of it and put it around the stove so that there's about a quarter inch or less of space between the pot and the stove, that will solve the snuffing problem.” 7:20:12 PM 3/13/04 “...and then your jet holes will not work worth a dang.... Might I suggest a preheat ring around the base to warm it up enough to get the burners going?” 7:26:17 PM 3/13/04 “I wait plenty of time for it to get warm, but when I set the pot on the top, the stove just goes out. Heck I have waited 2 minutes for it to get going good. The last stove I made worked pretty good, although I did snuff it once.” 7:30:14 PM 3/13/04 “That's why I don't much care for that type design. Wastes fuel.” 7:39:08 PM 3/13/04 “at Canoecopia there was a class on making pepsi stoves..I told them they should” 7:49:18 PM 3/13/04 “teach them how to make a windscreen..sorry got disconnected..hotel computer..” 7:50:28 PM 3/13/04 “Yea mata, the windscreen is as important for alcohol as the burner or more.” 7:53:11 PM 3/13/04 “SS, what's your preferred design, and what sorta of bizarre cans will I have to purchase to build it? lol...” 8:29:01 PM 3/13/04 “Oh, and my new windscreen is about 3" tall... Too tall?” 8:39:38 PM 3/13/04 preferred design? “K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) is my preferred design. ;-) For a full size burner, I like Scott Henderson's Pepsi Stove It's the classic. For solo cooking, I like my 0.2 oz modified version of Sgt Rock's ION burner. My version is a little less than 1" high, will hold exactly 1 fl oz of alcohol, and boil two cups of cold water in under 7 minutes and continue to 11 minutes. No need to measure fuel except pour it in and light. I know to pack 1 fl oz alcohol for at pint of boiled water.” 8:55:18 PM 3/13/04 Windscreens? “Windscreens should stand away from the pot sides about 1/4 to 3/8". Any closer and they block heat, farther and too much outside air blows in. Combustion air must be let in for the burner to burn. I make a full row of 1/4" holes around the bottom of all my windscreens. Windscreens should come up at least partway up the pot, but all the way up the pot sides will block heat. An inch or so works fine. Generally, the pot should sit about 3/4 to 1" above the alcohol burner, so size your pot stand for this. Try different measurements and see what the difference in boil times it makes.” 9:04:59 PM 3/13/04 “Okay, the only difference between the stove I made today, and Scott Henderson Pepsi Stove is the placement of the burner holes. Oh, he spends way too much time making it. Krazy Glue? JB weld? Pshaw. Mine are plenty well sealed, I get a nice blue flame, but when I put the pot on top, sometimes they go out. Checking out the ION stove now...” 9:06:00 PM 3/13/04 9:07:02 PM 3/13/04 “Looking at the instructions for the ION stove, I see that Sgt. Rock has a piece of hardware cloth to use as a pot stand inside the ION. I thought of this too, but figured making one that went around the stove instead of inside it would be wider and give a better base for the pot. So why would my jets not work right?” 9:12:07 PM 3/13/04 “Let's see, you are making double wall stoves? You said above, your 'stove' was nothing more than a can. To me that means one can, no double wall. ??????” 9:17:29 PM 3/13/04 “Hey Stovey, didn't get outside till 9 p.m. and ... sooo.... haven't run it yet. BUT I did wash it. ;-P Wow, I had no clue as to the importance of a windscreen. Stovestomper has saved my soul!!! HALLELUJAH!!” 10:14:31 PM 3/13/04 “Hey STovey, wind advisory outside today. Up tok 45 MPH....... would that be a good test??? LOL” 10:55:30 AM 3/14/04 “yes” 11:07:28 AM 3/14/04 “sheeyat! I was hoping you'd say NO! lol” 11:08:30 AM 3/14/04 “My pot is nothing more than a can...the stove is a standard double-wall design. I've gotten pretty good at making them now. A pair of tin snips helps immensely, although I do get some funny cuts every once in a while. I just use the tin snips to cut the inner wall strip out of the can.” 11:52:45 AM 3/14/04 STOVESTOMPER RULEZ!!! “Wind advisory... gusts to 45 MPH. Definitely wind as hell out my backdoor on the "patio" area. YES THE STOVE STAYED LIGHTED! Even when winds were rattling the pot and I could hear the flame being blown around. I didn't have a stopwatch, per se, but can tell you that 2 cups of water boiled in roughly 7 minutes and at that time the fuel was almost gone. STOVESTOMPER RULEZ!!!” 12:05:37 PM 3/14/04 “Oh yeah, and I looked like Nanook of the North out there. It's just nasty out!!” 12:10:59 PM 3/14/04 Next iteration “I went out and got a roll of 1/2" hardware cloth, and made a stand that fits inside the stove, like the ION stove. The top of the stand is 1/2" above the top of the stove, and this puts the pot about 3/4" above the burners. I also finally got some big honking paper clips to hold the new windscreen together closer to the pot. I also have a thin aluminum pot cover, used in all trials. Between each trial, the entire system was allowed to cool to ambient temperature, about 70F. (21C) Trial 1: using about 16.5 oz of cold water and 1oz of alcohol, I lit the stove and set the pot on the new stand. I let it set there for a bit, then it seemed like the stove was having trouble getting started, so I took the pot off and waited for the stove to get going good. at 1m37s I put the pot back on the stove. It began to boil at about 5m30s, and I had a good rolling boil at about 5m45s. The stove went out very soon after, at around 6m30s. Trial 2: Based on my observations from the first trial, I decided to see what would happen if left the pot off the stove until the jets were going. This time I had 16oz of cold tap water, and 1oz of alcohol. I lit the stove, and at about 1m30s the jets were going good. I put the pot on the stove and sit back. The stove went out at about 6m30s, and the water never boiled, although it got close. Trial 3: This time, I figured that putting the pot on the stove as soon as I lit it wouldn't make any difference in the amount of time it took to get the stove going, since in the two previous trials, it had taken about a minute and a half, and that losing 1m30s worth of heat from the stove was what cost me a boil on trial 2. Again, 16oz of cold tap water and 1oz of alcohol. I lit the stove and immediately put the pot on it. The stove's jets started going good at about 1m37s, so my theory (that placing the pot on the stove as soon as it was lit wasn't hurting the time for the stove to get going) was correct. During this trial, I noticed that some of the parts of the aluminum windscreen that were close to the flames were beginning to glow bright red. One particular piece that was sticking directly into the flame actually sagged under its own weight during the burn. The melting point of aluminum is 1220F (660C), but I really don't think I got it that hot. Damn close though. The water in the pot began to boil at about 5m20s, and had a full rolling boil at 5m50s. The stove burned out at 6m25s. After this trial, I examined the windscreen, and discovered that sections of it were burned to ash. For this windscreen, I used the rim of a disposable turkey roasting pan with 1/4" holes punched in it at about 3/4" intervals. I believe that for use with this stove, I may need to construct a windscreen out of heavier gauge aluminum sheeting it order to keep it from being consumed. The lid and reflecting plate for this setup were constructed from the bottom of the turkey pan which seems to be about the same thickness as the edge. Neither were harmed during the trials, and the aluminum Heineken can, made from a thicker gauge of aluminum also seems to show no ill effect.” 4:56:09 PM 3/14/04 “bitpusher - the only thing to do for the windscreen is to make sure no direct flame is reaching it - ie no jets that impact the windscreen or no alcohol burning under the edge of the windscreen. the problem with the jets is one of the reasons I now avoid that style of burner when using the beer can pot and instead just use a small open burner either with or without a fiberglass wick - by small I mean I use a tea candle cup - just barely enough volume to boil 1.75 cups of water.” 6:57:06 PM 3/14/04 Nanook of the North “Well, I'm glad you were so fashionable while giving the stove a test run. Sounds like it worked as designed. :-)” 7:44:17 PM 3/14/04 Made and tested another stove “This time, I figured why not try and make a stove out of one can instead of two? The reason is because I have all these pop can tops lying around, and it seems a waste. So I tried it. I made a typical two-wall type alcohol burner, but used the top of the can instead of another bottom for the stove top. I think I have made the slowest, coolest burning stove of all time. It ended up kinda tall. The burner holes are about 1/8" below the top rim of the can. I put in 1oz of alcohol, lit it, and waited for the jets to get going. After about a minute, they were going good, so I put the pot (my Heiny pot) right on top of the stove. Of course, that slowed the burning down a lot. So I waited. And waited. And waited. The water finally boiled at about 15m30s. Yes, fifteen minutes. The stove continued to burn for another four minutes after that. It really stretched that ounce of alcohol out, let me tell ya.” 10:54:06 PM 3/14/04 “bit... are your wife and family happy with the new obsession??? LOL” 11:11:52 PM 3/14/04 “Bit - Now you have a stove for simmering! ;-)” 7:55:52 AM 3/15/04 “Wife? Family? Actually I took the kids with me when I did all my shopping yesterday afternoon. Gave my wife some time alone without the kids underfoot and the kids got to spend some time with dad driving him nuts for a change.” 8:45:11 AM 3/15/04 “That crossed my mind, SS....” 8:46:12 AM 3/15/04 “And thus continue the Bitpusher Chronicals...” 10:34:33 AM 3/15/04 “The only problem I can see with that stove (other than it is sloooooow) is that the top ring of the pop can looks like it might burn off one day. Other than that, no significant issues.” 10:38:57 AM 3/15/04 I have a disease “StoveStomper has successfully transmitted his mind virus to me. Today, while I was shopping for other stove stuff at Wal-Mart, I spied some cans of Starbucks Double Shot Espresso in the cooler at the checkout. What thought passed through my mind? "I wonder if I could make a stove out of those." So I bought two. I hope this stuff tastes good. I'm gonna drink one the next two mornings in a row, but it may be awhile before I get a chance to make a stove from the cans...” 10:44:12 PM 3/15/04 “Sick..... SICK!!!!” 11:01:08 PM 3/15/04 “OK, the Doubleshot is fairly intense, for coffee with milk in it. But I survived. I told my wife that I planned on trying to make a stove from them, and that was really the only reason I bought them. She laughed, in that way that only wives can. If she complains about it, I'll tell I could always get a mistress instead...” 8:39:16 AM 3/16/04 “Ha Ha, I happy someone else has this problem now. I don't feel so alone..... ;-) I go into a store for fruit, milk and bread, and come out with something I bought just for the dang container it was in! Sick!” 8:43:43 AM 3/16/04
