Don't feel bad, bit. I just bought a 6-pack of the 5.5 oz. cans of Campbell's tomato juice solely for the cans. I HATE tomato juice.

It was probably cheaper than the Doubleshot too.

Hey, I found an 8oz bottle last night with a measuring chamber, like that fancy bottle you've got.

Cool. Where'd ya find it? BTW, Aaron at Brasslite will soon have a 4 oz. version of that bottle.

I found it two places, at an Autozone, and at Walmart. It was ~$4 at both places. It comes with this stuff that keeps your gas from going bad, for free!

The thing I like about my modified ION burner is it will only hold a max of 1 fl oz of alcohol so I never waste fuel with a full size 'pepsi' stove by putting to much extra fuel in. I know to take 1 fl oz of alcohol for each pint of water to be boiled and I will have plenty.

Stove Extrapolation
I have my mind wrapped around making an alcohol burner that would work in an oven...hmmmmm....

I'm getting ready to fire up my new modified ion stove under one of those fancy Heineken pots.

No kidding.........
I hope you guys are testing these babies outside away from anything that can burn. ;-)

And keep a Fire Extinguisher handy!

I had one of mine split open and spill flaming alcohol all over the ground. It can happen.
I usually place my stoves in a metal pie pan for the first test firing so if they do leak, the alcohol will be contained. My gas grill makes a good test platform.

My ion will only hold 3/4 oz alcohol but it boiled 2 cups of cold tap water in 7 minutes flat and burned for another 1.5 minutes. I bet I could get a longer burn time if I lowered the pot stand a bit...

FG
I have placed the pot bottom to about 3/4" from the ION burner top and still get a sub 7 minute boil.
Closer will inhibit the flame and extent the burn time and most likely extend the time to boil also.

I cut the top and bottom 3/4" high and the internal cylinder 7/8" high. I drill the burner holes along the top outside edge, not the can sides. Made with these values, the burner will hold a max of exactly 1 fl oz.

Yup. It extended the burn time by 4 minutes. Unfortunately, it also extended the boil time by two.

I got similar results with my Titan kettle. I wonder what would happen if I made it a 16-hole burner instead of 8...???
Father Goose

I make 16 holes to make the boil time faster.

Woo-HOO!!! A little fine-tuning of the windscreen and I got my boil time down to 5.5 minutes! YESSSSSSS!!!

You were right about the fuel capacity, Stove. I miscalculated the first time. It will hold 1 ounce...barely.

I just made 4 of your Aluminum Pot straps. I have one more 36in piece to make 4 more. They were easy to make and work great. THX

The stoves I've been making lately have 24 holes...They burn goooood.

Never worried about them splitting open before. I usually test them under my carport.

Guess I should move to out in the driveway, huh?

SS, a question on my extreme wind test on Sunday. As I recall, you said the 1 oz. would boil 2 cups of water in 7 minutes -- which it did -- and then have enough fuel for another 4 minutes. I don't know if it was because of the extreme winds gusting or what, but it pretty much ran out of fuel within a minute after I noticed it boiling. Theory??

lizs - The winds more than likely did impact the burn time or else you didn't fill it all the way to the jet holes. Either way, it got the job done! ;-)

bit - On rair stoves, a side will split. Don't be shocked if this happens. Set the burner inside a pie pan to contain any spilled fuel.

karo - COOL!!!!! You are the only other person in the world besides me that I know has made my 0.4 oz. pot gripper!

FG - COOL!!! Ain't these little burners wonderful?

I'll stop testing them between my legs then, lol...
bitpusher

bit - the rair split side usually happens right after putting the two halfs together. No big deal, just take some JB Weld epoxy and fill in the split. After curing wrap the stove sides with aluminum tape and it's fixed.
StoveStomper

I've only split a side like that once...I started crimping the top edge of the bottom half, and haven't split one since.

Hey Stovey...
Here's a thread on TrailForums where a guy is talking about problems with lighting an alcohol stove when it's colder than 20F. Ever run into that problem? What do you do?

Bit - Ha! Same guy asked the same question on Whiteblaze.net.
StoveStomper

So using say, your own body heat to keep the alcohol warm would work, eh? I guess you gotta move fast before the alcohol cools down.
bitpusher

I wouldn't wait 10 minutes to light it.
StoveStomper

I have used my alcohol stoves in temps around 20 degrees. It's really much ado about nothing.
Just use common sense.
StoveStomper

3/17/04

Oh, but that's so lacking in these times...
bitpusher
10:48:02 AM
3/17/04

its my opinion that the key item in lighting a cold alcohol stove is to have the flame / spark actually touch the surface of the alcohol without dunking the flame INTO the alcohol or holding the flame above the surface of the alcohol.

Matches would work a lot better for that than a lighter, unless you have one of those honking "aim-a-flame" style lighters.

But that wouldn't be ultralight, would it?!
bitpusher
10:58:12 AM
3/17/04

I would use either a match or a twig dipped in the alcohol ala StoveStomper to bring the flame to the surface of the stove's alcohol. My experience with the Solo Candle-Lighter is that it just does not work well in the cold and is not worth the weight as a result. The jury is still out on the use of the Spark-Lite in the cold - that may still be OK but it can be a bit of a problem depending on the design of the stove - works best when it is easy to get the sparks close to the alcohol.

Well, I hope to NOT be able to test that 20-degree or less starting problems yet this spring. :-P (although we had a smattering of snow this a.m.)
