Sorry Tree.

Artex, it is only a short plane ride.

Yes, but alas, funds and time off are limited. Until I get my master plan in gear, I'll just resort to spatting at you guys when you do trips at some of the places I used to hike. BTW, look forward to meeting you on the Maine trip.

I'm going to need to buy new maps for this trip.

I could also use directions to the trailhead. I don't know where anything is in the Catskills.

Lol zac, try doing a google search for Woodland Valley Campground. or see the link below. The trail is very well marked as long as you remember to look up the cliffs. I dayhiked up to Whittenberg and we lost the trail in some very rough rocks. We looked all over for a marker, it just ended at a cliff. Then we looked up.
The ADK club actually has a great set of maps for this area.

Woodstock's a cool little town, BTW. There was some pizza place on the eastern side of the main drag I'd go to sometimes. Good slices.

Artex, your thinking of Catskill Mountain Pizza, great pizza! That is where 6 of us ate 4 large pizzas after the Devils path last year. It is my regular post Catskills hike meal.
If you sit outside on a nice day there is quite a parade of unique individuals that walk by.
LtHiker

I do believe that's the place! Eat a slice for me next time you're there (you bastard!).

I'll eat two and Drink a Long Trail Ale for you! Hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sundays in woodstock they have a open market in the square all the hippies come out and the whole town smells like petuli oil.

Lt, you up for the Woodstock trip for the 35th anniversary in August?

Tree, that is so far in the future, I have no idea.

Lumberzac, that is the trail, he did it the oposite of my plan. People do this as a dayhike, but i'm not. Too many things to see and enjoy.
LtHiker

How many miles is this going to be on Friday?
lumberzac
10:04:40 AM

Um I would guess about 6-7 hard miles. Not much but the scenery is great. then another 6 or so on Saturday and again Sunday.

I'm just trying to figure out if I need to take time off from work and if so how much?
lumberzac

I was planning on getting to Woodland valley late morning, but you could probably get on the trail later and catch up to the rest of us.
LtHiker
10:14:39 AM

If I left at noon that would put me at the trailhead assuming I don't get lost. The only place I’ve been to in the Cats in the past 15 years is Woodstock for work.
lumberzac
10:22:55 AM
3/18/04

If you can find woodstock you will be fine. Woodland valley is off of route 28.

What time do you think you could get to the trail head?
LtHiker
10:53:21 AM
3/18/04

I should be able to get there around 2pm.
lumberzac

Artex

The local hiking stores for me only have maps of the ADK's and none of the Cat's. So it looks like I will have to order something. Any suggestions.

Campmor carries maps made by the NY/NJ trail conference of the Catskills. Very good maps also.

I would like to get the Topo program for the NE but I won't have the cash for it in time for the trip. I'll have to check out campmor.

I got a Catskills guidebook and maps
here

Topozone is great, and it's free. But the maps provide a wealth of other info such as spring locations (which will be more active with the thaw/mud season) and what not. The guidebook Twiggie posted a link to is also very handy. Just my 2 cents.
Artex
9:22:28 PM
3/30/04

I did by an ADK guide to the Catskills, but was surprised that it didn't come with a map like the High Peaks and Northville Placid trail guides.

(note to self) do not show the spring locations to Pennsy

I probably can piece a good map together from topozone. It's been a while since I have needed to get maps. I do most of my hiking in the Adirondacks and I have the Topo ADK region software.

Thanks for the suggestions.

NJ/NY Trail Conference maps are the best for the catskills. Campmor in Paramus & a few hiking stores in New Paltz. The tiny hiking store in Wurtsboro prob has them too. I have ALL the topo's for the Catskills, tons of software but use the trail conference maps. They're small, cover the whole area (5 maps) & printed on pretty indestructible stuff.

You're right zac - no maps. I went to check last night before I posted but my Catskill book was at work - all the others had maps, so I assumed that one did as well.

lumberzac - could you please send me your e-mail address for HIKE MAINE III?

Too Bad Twig, I know it is tough to leave a state like Maine.

Lumberzac, I can scan the section or sections of the trail that you need and e-mail them to you. Do you have Adobe Reader?
