A new fire starter
Hi All,
I am working on developing a new firestarter that would be sprayed out of a small aerosol can to start camp fires or warm up a stove. I posted a thread a while back about this, and most people use Lint/cotton and vaseline.
Can you give me some help as to what are the most important characteristics you look for in a fire starter?
And, do you have any reservations about using a small (2-4 oz) aerosol can?
Thanks for your help!

Canuck tip.
Up here fishing guides use propane torches to start the fire for shore lunch.

I would not feel to keen on carrying an aerosol can with flammable stuff in it.

Murphys Law always seems to rear its ugly head at the most inopportune time.

I am even reluctant to carry any container that the lid may come off and usually pack those in a zip lock if I have to carry any.

There are so many other lighter and safer firestarting methods...I don't think I'd use something that came in a spray can backpacking, sorry...

Could I huff it?

Sure, just don't light up after you do...

I wouldn't use something along those lines. Firestarters are everywhere and I'm happy with the method I use, sorry!

Alcohol-based hand sanitizer works pretty good too.

Father Goose usually carries some extra trioxane tabs to get his little windows into Hell going...lol...

An aerosol can used as a firestarter is a bomb waiting to happen.

If I were you I'd abandon that line simply on liability grounds.

That brings up a question...are we talking a compressed aerosol can or a pump spray? If you made the firestarter out of a thinned version of the hand sanitizing gel and put it in a pump bottle, you might have something there.

You want something that will light easy but burn slow.

Now, if you could just come up with something that would light easily, burn clean and come out of a toothpaste type tube and would stay where you put it, now that would be sweet.

As long as I get a mushroom cloud when I light the fire I’ll be happy.

I usually carry a couple of Greenheat packets just in case I wanted to start a fire. It's ultralight, and as their name suggests enviromentally friendly. It's a sweet natural goo that will attract bees if you just leave a glob of it out. They sell it as the evil WalMart. The little packet is about the size of two ketchup packets, it has the consistency of a gel toothpaste, and burns slowly. Maybe you can convince them to sell it in a smaller tube then they offer.

Yeah, troll or not, it was good to find out about the Green Heat stuff.

And bitpusher is right, there is a firestarting paste available in a tube, though it probably isn't as "friendly" as the Green Heat gel.

I would think a firestarter would have to be a somewhat non-volatile and solid substance. a Spray-can for starting a fire sounds scary, and would likely be banned by many state and national parks.
