New fire startersView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 20 of 20 messages posted.
A new fire starter “Hi All, I am working on developing a new firestarter that would be sprayed out of a small aerosol can to start camp fires or warm up a stove. I posted a thread a while back about this, and most people use Lint/cotton and vaseline. Can you give me some help as to what are the most important characteristics you look for in a fire starter? And, do you have any reservations about using a small (2-4 oz) aerosol can? Thanks for your help!” 10:40:18 AM 3/11/04 Canuck tip. “Up here fishing guides use propane torches to start the fire for shore lunch.” 10:43:46 AM 3/11/04 “I would not feel to keen on carrying an aerosol can with flammable stuff in it. Murphys Law always seems to rear its ugly head at the most inopportune time. I am even reluctant to carry any container that the lid may come off and usually pack those in a zip lock if I have to carry any.” 1:57:34 PM 3/11/04 “There are so many other lighter and safer firestarting methods...I don't think I'd use something that came in a spray can backpacking, sorry...” 1:59:21 PM 3/11/04 “Could I huff it?” 2:02:51 PM 3/11/04 “Sure, just don't light up after you do...” 2:03:39 PM 3/11/04 “I wouldn't use something along those lines. Firestarters are everywhere and I'm happy with the method I use, sorry!” 2:07:01 PM 3/11/04 “Alcohol-based hand sanitizer works pretty good too. Father Goose usually carries some extra trioxane tabs to get his little windows into Hell going...lol...” 2:08:46 PM 3/11/04 “An aerosol can used as a firestarter is a bomb waiting to happen. If I were you I'd abandon that line simply on liability grounds.” 2:08:51 PM 3/11/04 “That brings up a question...are we talking a compressed aerosol can or a pump spray? If you made the firestarter out of a thinned version of the hand sanitizing gel and put it in a pump bottle, you might have something there.” 2:10:36 PM 3/11/04 “Can you give me some help as to what are the most important characteristics you look for in a fire starter? You want something that will light easy but burn slow.” 2:13:16 PM 3/11/04 “Now, if you could just come up with something that would light easily, burn clean and come out of a toothpaste type tube and would stay where you put it, now that would be sweet.” 2:34:42 PM 3/11/04 “As long as I get a mushroom cloud when I light the fire I’ll be happy.” 2:40:12 PM 3/11/04 “I usually carry a couple of Greenheat packets just in case I wanted to start a fire. It's ultralight, and as their name suggests enviromentally friendly. It's a sweet natural goo that will attract bees if you just leave a glob of it out. They sell it as the evil WalMart. The little packet is about the size of two ketchup packets, it has the consistency of a gel toothpaste, and burns slowly. Maybe you can convince them to sell it in a smaller tube then they offer. Green Heat” 2:51:26 PM 3/11/04 “Yah mean like firestarting paste, flyguy?” 2:51:58 PM 3/11/04 “Nice thread on fire starters, but...*sniff* *sniff*...I smell nothing but a troll in XXXcamper. You boys been had!” 3:01:24 PM 3/11/04 “So what if we have. Someone will probably benefit from this thread.” 3:04:38 PM 3/11/04 “Gee skeezer, think so? Boy, I must be dummer den I look. (Yeah, Bit. Exactly!)” 3:06:06 PM 3/11/04 “Yeah, troll or not, it was good to find out about the Green Heat stuff. And bitpusher is right, there is a firestarting paste available in a tube, though it probably isn't as "friendly" as the Green Heat gel.” 3:13:26 PM 3/11/04 “I would think a firestarter would have to be a somewhat non-volatile and solid substance. a Spray-can for starting a fire sounds scary, and would likely be banned by many state and national parks.” 3:58:26 PM 3/11/04
