It might be time for treebeard and myself to start thinking about getting a lager tent to share.

any ideas?

You better check with Treebeard, he might prefer an ale or pilsner tent.

the road runner that Pennsy so graciously gave to me in my time of need is an awesome kick ass tent - i recommend you get one.

I am keeping an eye out for a two-person that has lots of mesh for summer use. I see The North Face Pebble is on sale right now at Campmor. Any advice on that one? It looks a bit smallish for two, but probably OK.

Anybody have one? I looked on here and saw 2poops asked the same question awhile ago.

Or, any other recommendations. A low price would be nice. lol

Not a bloody chance in hell. :O

You know, just because I seem to have stepped into a black hole with regards to my love life - doesn't mean that I plan on going solo for the rest of my life!

Now - send the hottie backpacking men my way goddamnit!!!!

I think the new upcoming Henry Shires Rainshadow 3 person TarpTent with floor and extended beak would work wonderfully for a couple. Treebeard's back will not break from the weight either.

I have the Squall TarpTent and think it's the greatest.

I have a Quest Prying Mantis. It’s very stable, self-standing, and has a huge vestibule. My main fault with it is it is heavy (about 6 or 6.5lbs).

Are you looking for free standing only? If not, I second bitpusher's SD Clip Flashlight 2 recommendation. Perhaps the SD Clip Flashlight 3 might give you plenty of room for two and gear.

MSR Hubba-Hubba. I'm getting ready to get mine out of layaway. 2 person, freestanding, 4 pounds. It does have a mesh inner though, so you might not like it. I like it because I can take the fly and footprint and use it like a tarp.

Putting up my Clip 2 is a snap.

An advantage to freestanding tents is that they're easier to put up in the snow, sand, or on rocky or hard ground. Since you live up North, that would be a good feature.

Non-freestanding tents tend to be lighter. It's obvious that you won't be carrying the tent. I can set up my SD Clip Flashlight two in just a few minutes.

i wont be carring the tent, but will share the weight. carry tent or poles.
I would never make tree carry it by himself. thats just wrong.

Whoops, I guess I need a free-standing 2 man tent. I've only had one time that I wasn't able to put a stake in the ground for my SD Clip Flashlight 2. I made due by tying off to trees and using rocks and parachute cord.

I guess now that I'm more likely to do some backpacking in winter weather, I should get a 2-man freestanding tent. I already have 3-man and 4-man freestanding tents, but I guess I need another.

Bitpusher's right, the number of people that will fit in a tent comfortably with some gear is one less than what the manufacturer says. Manufacturers tend to pack them in like sardines.

With 3 tents and a Hennessy Hammock, I might be pushing it with a 5th shelter.

that is the truth ski. we were looking at tents last year, and the look on trees face when he relized just how small they can get was pretty funny.

"you want me to share that thing with you in the middle of winter?"

I've shared my clip 2 with my brother before, but if you do that, no gear in the tent, and it makes it hard to do stuff like get dressed or turn around in the tent.

OMG! I'm a gear slut too then!

Let's see:

1. New Mountain Hardware solo tent

2. Roadrunner two-person tent

3. Hennessy Hammock for one

4. My first tent....Walmart special two person dome (which by the way some gumba from Queens still has in the trunk of his car! - oy - I want my tent back :)

I think I'm a gear slut.

Tree and Maple prefer to spoon in their shelter, so they can get by with a one person tent w/o gear, or a two person and still fit their gear inside. Though because of their peculiar sleeping habits everyone around them prefer they use a tent with less mesh and hopefully a full coverage fly.

Speaking for myself and the roughly 25 tents I have had in my lifetime, I think the best overall tents are made by Sierra Designs.

I am talking about a composite of all features, comfort, weight, ease of pitching, and quality.

Actually I rate SD's quality as the best out there. I have never, ever had a leak, had a blowdown, or had water wick in. I have used them in all kinds of weather, from sub zero in the Badlands of South Dakota in february, torrental rains and high winds and summer heat. Little or no condensation and i can usually configure to be as comfortable as possible for the conditions.

My last three tents have been SD.
I might think about a tarp tent for sheer lightweight backpacking under sertain conditions (although I normally use a bivy in those cases or else make a debris shelter).

I currently have the SD Super Nova which is a two/three person convertible, and a footprint. The 3 man config is ebough room for two people and all the gear and the two man config makes a good one person and gear tent. With the footprint, I can take just the print, poles and fly for a lightweight shelter, fine if there are not a lot of bugs.

I'm looking for one with mesh because I have a pretty nice, but fairly heavy 4-season tent, an older Sierra Designs Nightwatch purchased used from bpbaby. What I don't like is the weight... and lack of mesh lower on the sides for ventilation and to see out.

Maybe I have a tent here that YOU need Mapes. LOL! Nope, I wanna keep for cold weather. It's pretty bombproof and actually has room to spare with two people. :-)

Maple check out the Black diamond tents. I just ordered the Lightsabre bivy 1#5oz so I will let you know about the fabric. They are made out of Epic a breathable fabric. they make one called the lighthouse 2 man 3lb freestanding. Backpacker Magazine gave it an editors choice award. The fabric is rated as a water resistant but they couldn't get it to leak. they also said that if you get the removable optional Vestibule you could do 3 people in a pinch.

I was thinking about checking out the firstlight slightly smaller 2 man.

What's all this about 2 men in mapleleafs tent?

If I were going to be sharing a tent with somebody I'd probably look into a 3 person tent and share the load between 2 people.

I'll second the MSR Hubba Hubba suggestion. Another tent I really like is the Mountain Hardwear Approach.

Mountain Hardwear Annapurna, a bombproof two person 4-season tent. That's 6lbs-14oz of real shelter from the storm.
or maybe the Mountain Hardwear Room with a View 3/4-season convertible. 6lbs-9oz.

Either of these MH tents would lay waste to Freeze Your A$$ Off IV and kick some serious TarpTent butt!
