It is a lot of work. And they are a little anal about stuff, but I enjoy writing, so I don't mind.

AND! I can put it on my resume.

I have the GoLite Team, a sister to pixie's Speed. Love it, although the shoulder padding didn't extend far enough so the hard plastic buckles dig in under my arms. Had to add extra padding under the buckles to fix it, but now its fine. I love the hip pockets for my camera, Chapstick, etc. Total size is 3300 CU (2900 + 400 for pockets), weight is 1 lbs. 15 ozs.

The hip pockets
are super nice. I have asthma and it allows me to keep my inhaler at my fingertips.

Bestest Pack
Granite Gear Vapor Trail. IMHO is the lightest and most comfortable pack I have ever used. Have you ever seen all those people constantly shifting, adjusting, and "messing with" their packs during a hike? Well you won't be one of them with this pack. It comfortably carries 30# all day with no worries, rubs, or errors! Stan Ritter has mine right now trying it out to see how he likes it. I have it in the long torso and can cram a weekend full of gear into it. Give Brandon a ring and he will hook you up.

I love my P-2 but I'm not sure how well it will carry smaller loads. It does best when you let your gear fill the whole space by puitting the sleeping bag in a larger stuff sack and such. It really is a great pack though.

Add my vote to the Vapor Trail pile. If you really want pockets then shop around for a really light one you can attach to the compression straps.

I've got a Golite Gust, and use those "Outdoor Products small insulated water bottle holder"s (campmor/4# ea.) that I put on the hip belt. I also have a fanny pack with bottle holders that I can wear over the hip belt with the buckle in the back.

I have the Golite Trek. At 5300 c.i. and 2 lbs. I need the bigger payload capacity to carry the MP3 player and speakers, 2 liter bag of wine and the 6 pack of beer.

All in all, a good pack at a good price.

Do not buy an ultralight backpack and expect to carry more than about 20-30 pounds in it.

I'm getting this pack from Mountain Crossings for my winter pack.
From an email from Winton Porter.
"Brian- thanks for the email. Sorry about not having the informtion of the website, but we can't keep them in-stock so promotion in via the users, like the one you saw
The pack comes in at about 2.3lb. has a single alluminum stay with a closed cell foam framesheet. The 5.5 inch wide hip belt allows you to transfer more of the load to the hips... unlike the Go-Lite product. The pack is made of spectra rip stop nylon. Our pack is equiped with hydration ports, but no dedicated internal bag for hydration. You have two side mesh pockets that are big enough to hold a 2 liter coke bottle. A single mesh pocket on the back for the wet stuff. Also, two pockets on the hip belts for bars, camera, maps, wet...Total cubes is about 3600 TO 4000 CU.

The pack is a partnership design with a company called ULA. We worked with the designer, thru hikers and tech heads for two years to get input and designed a light-weight thru-hiker pack that would handle 35lbs, but would carry 30lbs wonderfully.

The price is 189.99"

Has anybody used the

GoLite Race Ultralight Backpack

I'm looking for a new pack but I still want pockets, built in, for quick access to essentials. (shovel and TP) I liked the idea of the Virga with the sleeping pad used to support the pack but there were no pockets.

I don't remember, but doesn't the Virga have 2 side pockets? The pic I see of it on Binks site looks like my side pockets. Mine will hold a nalgene on one side and my REI coffee mug on the other.

I have been looking at the Granite Gear Vapor Trail for some time. My only hang up is the comfort and features of my Ospreys, I hate to loose them. The external pockets and the lid pocket on the Ospreys work great for organizing the pack. I just need a smaller pack. My Aether 75 is to big for most of my hikes and the 45 is to small for others. I guess I will be looking at the Aether 60. The question is do I go the extra 1.5 LB for the features I like because I know the vapor is nice to carry as well. For 2005 Granite Gear is going to offer a lid pocket or something in that order. If I use this option it would close the 1.5 gap between the two a bit in the comparison. As I understand it this can also be purchased for your older models as well. Sorry if this is old news to you guys, I just recently found out. Also for 2005 the Osprey packs might be going to a molded hip belt. This will be for the models that have a removable belt. As I understand it the dealer will have a special oven on site and will mold your belt to your shape. Guess this wont do much for the on line stores. I believe this will also be available to the folks that have the older models with the removable belts For a fee I would imagine. Guess we will have to wait and see. At this point I am leaning towards sticking with Osprey.

ya, i've got those spandexy side pockets, but i think they're only good for water bottles.

i'd like a couple of extra little pockets for the misc. stuff i like to keep handy - map, compass, water filter, buggy headnet ect.

I have and use one. It has become my primary pack. I loosely roll a 3/4 length ride rest sleeping pad inside of it to add a little more support and then place my sleeping pad and gear in the center. I’ve had the pack now for just under 2 years and it is now starting to show wear. I probably will only get one more year out of it. For $60 you really can’t go wrong.

I still love both my Osprey Aether 45 (very underrated and one of my favorite lightweight packs) and my Equinox Kathadin.
