1st Backpacking trip
http://community.webshots.com/user/bigkingtut . link to pictures from son's first trip. Wow What a trip this was 8" of snow on the Peak trail, 5hrs to summit-3 hrs to return. SOn liked to have been blown off trail by 70-80 mph winds, winds on summit were 60-70 at least.....

only problem was that Take A Break did not have enough lead in is bottom to keep him on the mountain, he liked to have been blown off the edge around 7500' by a gust of wind... been hard to explain that to his mother....

I was up there once before. It was VERY windy then too. I gotta say, GMNP is a pretty cool place to hike considering your in Texas. What other trails did yall hike out there?

I took my kids up there when they were 6 & 8. I wanted to turn around at the campsites, but they could see the top and wanted to sign that register. It was a beautiful clear, calm day in February with an inch of snow in the shade. They'd have never made it in the wind. My favorite hike there was camping up in the forest and hiking down into McKittrick Canyon.

hey walking dude... that was all we were able to do this trip. Had transmission problems on the truck. I have been in the back country a couple of years ago, Bush Mtn trail, Marcus trail, tejas trail, McKittrick trail over lost peak and into dog canyon

Bummer about the Transmission problems. That would be a horrible place to get broke down.

I was only there for 3 days when I went. I got the do El Capitan Trail. Camped on the front porch of the Williams Ranch Historic Site. We took on look at Shumard Canyon camp site and said, "screw this".
We also Devils Hall and Guadaloupe Peak Trail.
If ya go to Phil's Photo Page and look at the top pic of me, That's on the El Capitan Trail.
