Why?

I guess if Geo keeps chewing on radioactive mantles, he won’t need to pack a night-light because he’ll glow.

Shine little glowworm, glimmer, glimmer...

Yes, there are thorium mantles out there. You run a greater risk of death sitting on the pot in the morning than using a thorium mantle. So what basis in reason do you have for avoiding their use?
bitpusher

Maybe he eats them.

Perhaps. You should definitely avoid doing that.

But they taste so damned good, and they're next to weightless in the pack.
Geobeet

Not to mention the weight savings from not having to carry a light.

I want some magnesium mantles.

Woooooooo hooooooooooooo!!!!

Now THAT would put out some light! Not radioactive, either.

On a serious note, if you argue that not using thorium mantles will eventually close down thorium-mantle production plants in other countries that are damaging the environments in those countries, I'll buy that.

You are psychic. I was about to post that argument.

With the add-on that those things are so delicate there is always the chance that you WILL inhale some of it, maybe without realizing it. Putting your annual radiation dosage above background noise, for life. In your lungs.
techntrek

3/15/04

Yes, but only marginally above background level, which is pretty low. If you live near a coal-fired power plant, you're probably getting a bigger dose of rads per year than that anyway.
bitpusher

Happily not that close, although 3-mile island isn't too far north from here...

Why am I glowing?
techntrek
2:28:20 PM
3/15/04

You'd get a larger dose of rads from walking past the statuary on the Mall in D.C. than from walking past TMI.

I was a Oreos fan for about 11 years when I lived in beeyootiful Laur-elll. Back then they knew how to play baseball.

Never was a Balmoron though.

Don't worry about bales. He's trying to cover up his low self esteem because he can't spell by trying to insult me. He only does it when the cops kick him off the park bench.

Well, my candle lantern is silent, doesn't overpower the campsite with blinding light -- but very usable and mellow -- and lots of hours on each candle. Yeah, has downsides, as do all options. But a very easily managed form of light.

Is the paraffin radioactive? Are my matches made by babies in the back alleys of Banga-stan-la-nam? Hmmm...

"Let's sue NASA to install giant mirrors overhead that keep in sync with the dark side of the Earth. No more darkness anywhere, ever again. The plants will love it, and "night" hiking will be much easier!"

I've had a coleman backpacker peak lantern for aprx 15 years. Mine runs on white gas. I have taken it on backpacking trips, but mainly for long canoe trips. My brother-in-law was pissed about setting up camp in the (pitch) dark one trip many moons ago. I kept telling him not-to-worry-about-it. (he got madder) Then I fired up this lantern & his whole outlook changed for the rest of this canoe trip. Since my highschool days I have liked peak 1 stuff, where there wasn't a lot to choose from. I still like peak 1 & coleman stuff.

catskhiker - I've had good luck with coleman stuff also. My Apex 1 stove performed great for 10 years. It still works, but I retired it for a Pocket Rocket.

I used to use a candle lantern, but quit bringing it because of weight. Thought it would be nice to bring a lantern for larger groups to gather around when fires aren't permited. Probably won't because of weight.

I like my coleman backpacker lantern, it is great for car camping. I don't think I would bring it actually backpacking unless I was taking a gear sled. The lantern ony weighs a pound but then you need to have fuel.

I have one of the Coleman Extreme lanterns (uses power max fuel) that I take canoeing and backpacking, when I’m setting up a base camp. It weighs 12oz, is about the same size as the fuel bottle for my stove, puts out 10 foot candles of light, and lasts about 6 to 7 hours on a charge. The thing works great.

I have a Coleman Peak One (alleged) backpacker lantern that runs on white gas, but that sucker is indeed heavy and now consigned to car camping duty.

This new one runs on butane and is considerably lighter.

Yah, but does it have radioactive mantles?

Nope. No radioactive mantles at all. You have to light it to make it glow.

I also have a Peak 1 lantern that runs on white gas and it's somewhere around 20 years old. I haven't used in many years, but last year I fired it up just to see if it still works and it lit right up. I used to bring it on winter trips and it was nice for long nights.

I do have a little Casio Pocketvision model. I did take it on an overnighter on the AT in eastern Pa. once, when I wanted to see a World Series game.

They should put a really big TV in orbit so we can watch it in the backcountry all the time.
