I think that Father Goose got a similar bargain at a Wally World here too...someone is unloading silnylon, I wonder who?

Silnylon drives me nuts trying to sew it.
The dang stuff is so slippery, I make mistake after mistake.

Glue the edges together with some thinned Silnet or other silicone sealer, wait for it to cure, then sew it. That's what skullcap does.

a sewing store also has a glue that will hold the fabric togeether and then wash off with water.

The glue will work with sil-nylon?
Almost nothing glues to sil-nylon except sil-net or silicon glue.

Probably do, most couples do that. For folks don't know what hallway sex is, it's when you say "#&%!$ You" as you pass in the hallway.

"What part of Wal*mart do you find it in?!!"

In the fabric section. There is usually a display toward the front of the department and all the fabric in it is $1.00 a yard. The end of the bolts all state that the fabric is of unknown origin and fiber content. Silnylon will stand out because the rest of the stuff in that stand is butt ugly!

I’ve had a design for a taller version of the trekker tarp done in silnylon in my head for a couple of years but couldn’t see screwing up expensive fabric while I learn to sew. I’ve never tried it but hey… if girls can do it, how hard can it be?

speaking of wally-world, I went in to purchase ammo and they were OUT of the winchester 9mm value packs! #&%!$s. And to top it off, I wanted to look at a winchester 1300 defender, but they didn't sell it - only "sporting" shotguns are sold now. As if you couldn't use the 1300 for sporting purposes. #&%!$s.

I was thinking this weekend about getting one, a cheap simple one. I've been sewing my son's Scout stuff on by hand and that sux. Plus, I started thinking about sewing some bug netting into my siltarp to make it a better Florida shelter for me to use. Now that I see Wal Mart sells silnylon so cheap, hell who know what I might do.

I think you can get a Brother machine pretty damn cheap, Roam. It'll probably be fine for the light sewing you want to do.

If your going to buy a sewing machine don't buy the TV/or whatever special you'll hate sewing before you ever get started.

Most of the brand name machines have a low end model that will work just fine for most things you will probably do. Sewing machines are like any other tool or piece of gear cheapest isn't always the best but you don't have to buy the most expensive either. Check the sewing shops in your area and some Sears stores carry sewing machines. The more bells and whistles the more money.

Sporting purpose? Like giving a bad guy who pulls a gun on you a sporting chance to duck. If he's quick enough, he gets to live a few more minutes. If not, oh well!

Other sources of cheap ammo: cheaperthandirt.com and gun shows.

Those are nice machines Bit but I think a $150.00 Singer or Kenmore might do the trick if all you plan on doing is stuff sacks and tarps.

Your wife's machine can probably cook dinner while it sews a dress!

Even the old style Wal-Marts in the South had a fabric section.

Hey dayhiker... if you're ever in Auburn/Opelika again I have about 50 yards of the $1 walmart stuff. Swing by and I'll sell you a bolt (~13 yards) if you can't find any.

All the stuff I've found at Mart sells is uncoated, but for tarps and stuff sacks the stuff works great. It will wet through, but I've been under some hard rains in my tarp made from the stuff and I've never had any dripping or leaking. I usually take a tarp made from the stuff as a community shelter my hiking partners and I can hang out under when it rains. That way we can stay up late and BS, eat, smoke cigar, etc under protection of a tarp and laugh at the rain. We had so much rain last year while hiking we've developed our own little hiking group rain system and this is part of it.

Also, I've found some desert camo 1.1oz/yard ripstop nylon (uncoated, and lacking the DWR the grey stuff has). The Camo, the olive green, and the purple is a different, looser weave then what the Grey stuff is. The grey stuff is the exact same weave as all the silnylon stuff I have. The other colors were a different, looser feeling weave, but weighed in at the uncoated 1.1oz/yard. I've passed up on a bunch of the olive and purple because of the looser weave, but I snatch up all the grey I can get my hands on. I've only seen the Camo once and I bought all 13 yards of it. I made my own version of a hennessey hammock out of the stuff.

My $6 11oz Tarp
My $8 14oz Tarp (Picture taken before I finished it by adding 3 additional guy points per side)

Thanks. So you're saying the stuff the Wal*Mart has looks like sil, but isn't sil? You've made tarps from it and the water just runs off with no dripping? That's great. I have to go to scenic Wadly, AL tomorrow, but now quite down to Auburn. Next time I'm down that way I'll give a holler. Thanks for the offer.

That would make it just nylon then...

They grey I have is EXACTLY like silnylon without the sil coating. The other stuff I've seen (Camo, olive, and purple) weights 1.1oz/yard but is a different weave and too is uncoated. That's not to say all the colors Wal Mart sells other then Grey is a different weave, that's just what I've seen so far. Once it's washed a couple of times the grey 1.1oz has a fairly nice hand. If I didn't have my Monatane I'd consider making a windshirt out of the stuff. And yes, we have not experienced any dripping from my tarps so far, and I even had a large gash I fixed in one by sewing a peice of leftover grosgrain over the hole. It will eventually wet through, but it has not been a factor yet since the tarps are so big we never touch the sides. Unlike a real Silnylon tarp it will absorb a little water when it gets wet and gain a few oz because of this.

Most of what I have found is 1.1 oz and heaver ripstop nylon in the $1 bin.
