i'll try to do some testing on it tonight.
i'll weigh it and double check it's waterproofness since there's been some talk of different colors having different properties.

i'm also willing to make simple stuff too, like tarps or vapor barriers.

I've found all sorts of interesting stuff in the $1 bins at Wal Mart. I still have about 60 yards of uncoated 1.1oz nylon. I also got a really cool cammo 1.1oz uncoated nylon too. Neat stuff.

Pretty darn cool of you to share your score Sacco. If I were the official scorekeeper I'd award you ten points!

assuming my testing shows it's the real deal, how's 1.50 a yard + shipping sound?

i'll prolly sell off 50 yds or so.

Not a chance.

Blue for a dining shelter tarp.
White for stuff sacks and something to sit on while taking a break and at camp
Orange, stuff sacks and not sure yet.

Since you have to deal with the same weather I do I'd recommend NOT using the dark blue for a dinning fly. That sun beating down on it can make it quite warm under it... with the heat radiating off the fly. I switched from a dark purple poncho I used to use as a dining fly to a lighter grey and green now. I think the white has some good possibilities as a dining fly which is what I want ;) Right now I use an uncoated 1.1oz nylon in the silver/grey for my dining fly. It works great and doesn't leak (though it will wet through if you touch it).

Maybe I should rethink this then.

I'll write back. I'm eating lunch at a Chinese place next to our local Wal-Mart and will stick my head in there before reposting quantities.

I need to make some more stuff sacks. I'll take a yard of each color when you're ready to sell. Just email me with the details.

dh, not asking too much at all.

wanted to see what kind of interest there would be.

let me do some testing then i'll post my results and you guys and tell me what you want.

thanks sass. the idea of making money off people for doing nothing doesn't appeal to me.

Actually... cutting, sorting, finding, buying, etc is a lot of work. I'd gladly compensate you for your tiem and troubles. 50% markup isn't bad at all considering the low price.

i figure if i sell 50 yds at 1.50 i'll make $20 after tax for my time and trouble.

not enough to make me feel guilty, but atleast it should cover my gas.

i never know how much to charge for stuff. i always either feel like a sleezeball or a tool.
usually i'd rather feel like a nice tool than a greedy sleezeball.

Can't beat silnylon for rain gear, backpack liners and stuff sacks. And tents, tarps...yada, yada. Great stuff.

rumors
I understand that silnylon is not flameproof and that is why the big tent manufactors don't use it.
I also heard a version that is has been developed and that is one reason we are seeing a lot of this stuff being dumped in Wal-Mart $1 bins.

MSR uses a heavier but fire resistant Silicone coated nylon in their Missing link, if I remember correctly.

You should try burning some scrap silnylon if you have any... and you'll soon see why I chose to use an uncoated nylon for my dining fly instead of silnylon... and why I won't pitch my tarptent anywher remotely close to a camp fire.

Any idea how much fabric is needed for a decent poncho?

My Wally World didn't have squat.
dayhiker

If you'll part with this much, I'd like:

White: 7 yards to make a dining tarp
Orange: 1 yard for stuff sacks
Purple: 1 yard for stuff sacks
Blue: 3 yards to make a poncho.

My email is on my profile. If the web address on your profile has your correct email, I'll send info that way.

Thanks.

If I've asked for too much and it keeps some folks from getting any fabric let me know and I'll drop out some of it.

Since we're taking orders... :D

8 Yards of white (Try my hand at tent designing)
4 yards of whatever color you have the most of and want to get rid of.

E-mail should be in profile.

Oh, I love my dining fly :D

I made my dining fly from a piece 120 long x 60" wide. I took another piece 120" long and cut it in half at 30" wide and sewed them together with a flat-felled seam. 9.2oz.

Sacco-- You know, if the quantity people want is small enough, you might be able to ship it in a priority mail pack envelope--(the paper envelope has no weight limit, for smaller quantities...)

Pinkbubelz is right. I recently bought 8 yards of versatech online and it arrived in a priority mail envelope. Food for thought.

BTW, my email addy is also in my profile.

Here's the Poop
The piece of silnylon I got was narrower than I thought. It measured out to be 49" wide and 106.5" long and weighed 4.7 oz on my digital scale. Do the math and that comes out to 1.17 oz per square yard.

Not quite wide enought for the poncho I want to make, but plenty for stuff sacks and other stuff. Still a great buy at $1 a running yard.

real silnylon ususally measures out to about 1.2oz/yd^2. The 1.1oz is the weight for the uncoated nylon before silicone impregnation.

I have never tried to make anything. Do you use special thread or needle to sew this material.
Ewker

It's VERY difficult to sew... mainly because it's so damned slippery. Nothing special, just a small/thin needle and some high quality polyester thread (I use gutterman). I ususally pull the material through because it's often hard to "start" because the feet won't catch the material.

I suspect the piece I got is 0.9 oz yd2 before treating.
It's 'real'.

ok here's my test results:

all four colors weigh in at 1.2 oz./yd.

i made bowls and let water sit in them for 3 hours.
then i gave them all a little squeeze like a water balloon.

the purple, blue, and orange were fine.

the white did have some droplets on the underside. when i squeezed it water started dripping.

you may want to rethink your choices. personally, i think the white will be fine as long as there's not standing water on it for hours but it's up to you.

i'll start emailing folks for your addys by the end of the day, after you've had some time to read this and decide.

I'll stick with my choices then. That amount of water doesn't sound like a big deal. What's the width of the fabric? Also, I replied to your email yesterday from my work account.
