My Ambition Is Gone Now
Well, last night I got the gumption to do a solo hike in the Adirondaks and was thinking about next (not this) weekend. I was going to hit the Bradley Pond lean-to and do Cooch, Sant and Panther and make them my first *winter* peaks and also in memory of the attempt last November.

Well, turns out, I found out today that the first day of Spring is THIS weekend (March 20), which would make the peak bagging *technically* not in the Winter. What a drag!

Oh well, who cares??? I'll still have a blast...if I go.

No soup for you!

Ah well, backpacking is backpacking. At least you're going to the 'Dacks. I'd call you a bastard for that, but I'll be backpacking in Maine at that time.

One year I got the last snow of summer and the first snow of autumn.

Just flip your calendar back to February --- you'll be fine.

Hike the Daks in September a few time and you'll understand the last snow of summer.

Buddur,
You will most definitely see snow. There is snow in the forecast every day through Friday.

On a side note, I have seen snow in the Adirondacks as early as September 1 and as late as mid June.

Good luck with your trip.

Buddur, you bastid, you never contacted me. You know those peaks are destroying my life. That week-end is reserved for my son now.

Humph (sniff).

Don't worry grem, we'll get you up there some day. Oddly enough I've been having the same problem with Colden. I have still not even made it to the trailhead yet.

Colden is neat. Not as high as some, but oh, what views. The view down into Avalanche Lake is amazing.

Colden's best done by the Lake Arnold trail IMHO. When things dry up a little I'd be most happy to do it with you.

Yeah, I went via the Lake Arnold Trail. It's steep, but not nearly as high as Algonquin or Marcy, so it's not too bad.

It was on Colden that I got the first snow of autumn. Last snow of summer was heading up Johns Brook Valley to Marcy. On Colden I watched the storm swirl in from the west.

I hit an ice storm on Coldham Mt (adirondacks) in August a few years back. Afraid I was going to slide off the smooth round top. Only other people up there was a boy scout troop & they were miserable.

Sounds good. And let me know when you want to finish the Santanoni Range.

If you make it up to NY in May, I'm doing a traverse of the Dix Range.

I got off Colden in a hurry that day for the same reason, catskhiker. I was watching the clouds swirl in and thought it might be a good time to hightail it out. As I hit the cripplebrush, the flakes started swirling around me.

Thanks lumberzac, but I doubt I could make it. Perhaps in the early fall though. Gremlin and I did the Dix range some time back, it was actually my first trip in the Adirondacks. Great time, except for the black flies (it was July).

I did that on Snowy Mt. I was watching an electrical storm move in from the west and decided that standing on top of a 40' steel fire tower wasn't the best place to be at that moment.
