My Ambition Is Gone Now “Well, last night I got the gumption to do a solo hike in the Adirondaks and was thinking about next (not this) weekend. I was going to hit the Bradley Pond lean-to and do Cooch, Sant and Panther and make them my first *winter* peaks and also in memory of the attempt last November. Well, turns out, I found out today that the first day of Spring is THIS weekend (March 20), which would make the peak bagging *technically* not in the Winter. What a drag! Oh well, who cares??? I'll still have a blast...if I go.” 3:37:46 PM 3/16/04 “No soup for you! Ah well, backpacking is backpacking. At least you're going to the 'Dacks. I'd call you a bastard for that, but I'll be backpacking in Maine at that time.” 3:43:33 PM 3/16/04 “The soup Nazi!!!” 3:48:24 PM 3/16/04 “You could get the first snow of spring.” 3:52:38 PM 3/16/04 “One year I got the last snow of summer and the first snow of autumn.” 3:53:09 PM 3/16/04 “Just flip your calendar back to February --- you'll be fine.” 4:37:12 PM 3/16/04 “LAST snow of SUMMER? do you live in oz?” 4:42:22 PM 3/16/04 “Hike the Daks in September a few time and you'll understand the last snow of summer.” 4:47:26 PM 3/16/04 “All odds say you will see snow!” 7:44:39 AM 3/17/04 “Buddur, You will most definitely see snow. There is snow in the forecast every day through Friday. On a side note, I have seen snow in the Adirondacks as early as September 1 and as late as mid June. Good luck with your trip.” 7:52:14 AM 3/17/04 “Buddur, you bastid, you never contacted me. You know those peaks are destroying my life. That week-end is reserved for my son now. Humph (sniff).” 3:21:41 PM 3/17/04 “Don't worry grem, we'll get you up there some day. Oddly enough I've been having the same problem with Colden. I have still not even made it to the trailhead yet.” 3:25:14 PM 3/17/04 “Colden is neat. Not as high as some, but oh, what views. The view down into Avalanche Lake is amazing.” 3:26:39 PM 3/17/04 “Colden's best done by the Lake Arnold trail IMHO. When things dry up a little I'd be most happy to do it with you.” 3:27:45 PM 3/17/04 “Yeah, I went via the Lake Arnold Trail. It's steep, but not nearly as high as Algonquin or Marcy, so it's not too bad. It was on Colden that I got the first snow of autumn. Last snow of summer was heading up Johns Brook Valley to Marcy. On Colden I watched the storm swirl in from the west.” 3:30:15 PM 3/17/04 “I hit an ice storm on Coldham Mt (adirondacks) in August a few years back. Afraid I was going to slide off the smooth round top. Only other people up there was a boy scout troop & they were miserable.” 3:38:50 PM 3/17/04 “Sounds good. And let me know when you want to finish the Santanoni Range.” 3:42:50 PM 3/17/04 “Damn you all to hell.” 4:10:04 PM 3/17/04 Artex “If you make it up to NY in May, I'm doing a traverse of the Dix Range.” 4:14:37 PM 3/17/04 “ ”4:15:34 PM 3/17/04 “I got off Colden in a hurry that day for the same reason, catskhiker. I was watching the clouds swirl in and thought it might be a good time to hightail it out. As I hit the cripplebrush, the flakes started swirling around me.” 4:22:34 PM 3/17/04 “Thanks lumberzac, but I doubt I could make it. Perhaps in the early fall though. Gremlin and I did the Dix range some time back, it was actually my first trip in the Adirondacks. Great time, except for the black flies (it was July).” 4:23:47 PM 3/17/04 “I did that on Snowy Mt. I was watching an electrical storm move in from the west and decided that standing on top of a 40' steel fire tower wasn't the best place to be at that moment.” 4:25:35 PM 3/17/04
