Popular teacher resigns after knife `horseplay'
By Marie Szaniszlo bostonherald.com

A popular New Hampshire gym teacher and coach has resigned amid charges he cut a student with a steak knife in what began as horseplay over a Krispy Kreme doughnut, school officials said.

Marc Bergeron, 59, submitted his retirement papers Monday at Spaulding High School before turning himself in to Rochester police. He was charged with second-degree assault and reckless conduct, both felonies, and released on his own recognizance, Lt. Anne Gould said.

The incident began Friday when three 15-year-olds visiting Bergeron in his office began joking about taking a box of doughnuts, Gould said.

The teacher told them not to but one of the boys went to take it anyway, she said, and Bergeron reached into his desk, pulling out two serrated steak knives.

He threw one at the student and missed, Gould said, then got into a tussle with the boy, cutting his thumb and puncturing his forearm.

So what'd he do wrong? I'd cut the little punks too if they tried to steal my donuts. Never get between a fat man and his food.

I still don't see what the big deal is over Krispy Kremes. I've had some there ok, but not worth waiting in a long line for and certainly not worth stabbing someone over.

Hmmm....okay. Well, not everybody likes 'em. Mapleleaf thinks they're awful. If some little #&%!$ tried to steal my Krispy Kremes, I'd probably pull a knife on 'em too.

The gym teacher has steak knives in his desk drawer for what reason?
Also, any gym teacher that would bring donuts to class is setting a bad example for anyone he is trying to educate in physical fitness.

I didn't really care for the cream filling. It tasted too much like cake frosting (which is why I don't like cake). I prefer a custard based filling. The donut wasn’t bad; it just wasn’t something I would go crazy for.

I'm pretty sure KK makes a custard-filled donut.

Their filled donuts are okay, but it's the plain glazed ones that are really good.

Their crullers don't suck, either.

There's an old-fashioned doughnut shop in Easton PA (about an hour from here) that makes the world's best doughnuts. Whenever we have someone out in that area, we get a box or two for the office. I'd cut someone over one of them.

What kind of Phys Ed teacher can't take a 15 y/o without needing a knife? In the olden days, the gym teacher would just get an iron grip around your wrist and you weren't goin' anywhere!

flyguy, times have changed. These days a gym teacher can't touch a student without getting in trouble. It's best to throw a knife at them from behind your desk. If you miss, just walk up and stab them.

You guys are missing the hole issue here. It's not about the brand of donuts, but the right of a gym teacher to take whatever means necessary to protect his donuts. He really had no other viable option before him. I think this would apply to most baked pastries and not just donuts.

Studies show microwaved donuts cause cancer. If you eat a microwaved donut while talking on a cell phone it's adios-time, baby. You'll drop right here, right now. *poof* Be careful out there, people.

A Syracuse schoolteacher has been accused of smuggling marijuana to her jailed husband by hiding the drugs in the binding of a Bible.

Valorie Salgado is accused of opening the binding, putting marijuana inside, regluing the binding and smuggling the book to her husband, Victor Salgado, at the Onondaga County Justice Center jail, according to Anthony Callisto, the jail’s chief custody deputy.

Valorie Salgado, 24, of Syracuse, is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in City Court.

Her husband’s a convicted murderer she met while she was in the jail as part of a school district program teaching English as a second language to inmates.
