Just got off the phone with Gander Mountain in Duluth. They are holding a Mountainsmith Auspex for me at the price of $150. Second best price I have found is $220. Anyone have any experience with these?

Mountainsmith Auspex
I have the woman's version, the chimera, and I like it a lot.
A friend of mine has an Auspex and he seems well pleased with it.

I've had one for a couple years. I love it. It's a very high quality pack. Mine did weigh more than the stated weight. I wasn't too happy about that. I also paid $150, from Campmor.

35-40 pounds is probably the outside limit for this model. I don't know what Gander has in their catalogue. I looked up Mountainsmith on the web and found the store closest to my home and called them. Duluth, Minnesota would be a good hike for you.

I got mine last year. Lots of places were selling the previous year's model about $30-40 cheaper. $150 sounds like a good price, tho' (unless it's an older model and they've shaved off another half pound).

They do have stays so they'll actually carry some weight, as opposed to a rucksack design. No padding, though -- be careful when you pack so that nothing is jabbing you in the kidneys, <G>
