Need some advice
Hi all,
Can anyone recommend a good 3-4 day 'car camping' area in OR? I'm a student in Portland, and I'm looking to do a 3-day trip, but I don't have backpacking gear, just a tent, cooler, and heavy stove.
Does anyone know a semi-secluded park or forest, with no snow, and nice 5-10 mile loops?
thanks,
mixson

Most of the PNW folks who frequented this board once upon a time, seem to have migrated away. I must confess that I am one of those deserters. I just drop in from time to time in case that some of the 'old school' players decide to put something of interest into the mix.

You might have better luck on one of the PNW specific forums like nwhikers.net. I'd offer some specific recommendations but I'm not all tht well versed on Oregon turf. Oswald West S.P. on the coast would be my first suggestion for you to consider for dayhike opportunities, with the general area around Mt. Jefferson running second. Look at the maps and make your own choices.

Oregon Coast
The Oregon dunes have some good day hiking. One of my favorite day hikes is Tahkinitch Trail loop below Florence. It takes you from the forest to the dunes to the beach back and same scenario on the loop back. Watch the tides though. Umpqua Dunes has a nice hike through the dunes and to the beach also. Gold and Silver Falls out of Coos Bay is a nice short hike. Cape Arago Sunset Bay has some nice trails right on the cliffs and awesome views. You can hike out and see the New Clarrisa shipwreck off of the south jetty in Coos Bay. South of Bandon is Floras Lake which is known for windsurfing, but on the right tides you can do an awesome beach loop. This time of year the campgrounds are pretty empty and you'll not see many people on the dunes. Also, plenty of ocean hikes on the North Coast also. Hope this helps!

Listen to that lady. She KNOWS.

Also, there is a good camping area down there near the umpqua dunes. Excellent seclusion and easy access to the dunes.
