I have an aunt who when told of my professional and academic goals advised me that it was impossible. I was too lazy and too dumb. When struggling with various challenges during those years I would remember our conversation and press on. Eventually I achieved or surpassed all of these goals. Stormbringer can choose to respond to any and all of these comments in any way he wishes. What defines us is not usually the event, but how we choose ro respond to the event, and there's a world of difference between respond and react.

Had no fire cuz there was no wood,

Went to Springer to clear my head,
Stormbringer lives 2scoops is dead,

Goin' back to Springer real real soon,
Hopefully you'll be there too.

just got home from springer about 30 mins ago...stormbringer signed in at Springer shelter, i didnt get a chance to check out the Springer MT journal to what wonderful words of the wise might have been posted, i just know that the entry in the shelter was, Stormbringer lives 2scoops is dead. GOOD LUCK, and have a safe trip.

All I have to say is that Scott is a very good friend of mine and we have done alot of backpacking over the last 2 years.I feel that he has come a long way and if people want to say bad things about him then it sounds like you need to get off your ass and try to do a long through hike of your own.

In my heart I beleave he can make it and if he does I hope he is showered in his glory!

We are going to make him some yummy snacks for his first mail drop.

Just stop saying bad things about my friend.

May the force be with you young Stormbringer..

It's always been a dream of mine to do a thru hike on the AT, still is. Maybe one day. Need to figure out how to pay the bills while on the trail. I admire anyone who makes a go at it. It's a terrific challenge. There are going to be some cold nights in the Smokies above 6k.

Good luck!!

Where will his journal be? How do we know where a person can send stuff for mail drops?

I don't know Scott, have not hiked with Scott... but I do know he and I have had fun giving each other good-natured #&%!$. He is an excitable boy (hmmmmm... is that a Warren Zevon tune? Know the title but don't know the tune)

Anyway... maybe he put his excitement at life to good purpose on his hike and the best to him.

And to the naysayers, lets take a look at a different, but probably equally tough task. Isn't bbinks -- who was a new backpacker not that long ago -- making a go of a backpacking store? Different skills, true, but just to show what motivation can do. It can be done.

bang path n. [now historical] An old-style UUCP electronic-mail address specifying hops to get from some assumed-reachable location to the addressee, so called because each hop is signified by a bang sign. Thus, for example, the path ...!bigsite!foovax!barbox!me directs people to route their mail to machine bigsite (presumably a well-known location accessible to everybody) and from there through the machine foovax to the account of user me on barbox.

In the bad old days of not so long ago, before autorouting mailers became commonplace, people often published compound bang addresses using the { } convention (see glob) to give paths from several big machines, in the hopes that one's correspondent might be able to get mail to one of them reliably (example: ...!{seismo, ut-sally, ihnp4}!rice!beta!gamma!me). Bang paths of 8 to 10 hops were not uncommon in 1981. Late-night dial-up UUCP links would cause week-long transmission times. Bang paths were often selected by both transmission time and reliability, as messages would often get lost. See Internet address, the network, and sitename.

I would consider one season to fall in the category of "continuous". To imply that taking a break along the way diminishes the accomplishment is silly.

My $0.02...
Well, I'm not lawyer, but let me take a stab at this anyway:

I'm not sure what the exact terms here were, but the ATC defines a thru hike as hiking the entire trail in one season. Doesn't say anything about order, sequence, continuity, or taking breaks.

That being said, unless the bet explicitly mentioned something about continuity, it shouldn't matter where Crash Bang ends. Period. Unless there's a section of trail that he's leaving out completely...

I, personally -- being the purist that I am, would only want to end at Katahdin. I mean, you couldn't possibly ask for a better finish line than that. But still, a thru hike is a thru hike, regardless of continuity or sequence.

As for defining the word continuous for through hikes, there is hardly anybody who has done a through hike who has not stopped for a day or two here and there, or for longer periods. Through hiking takes a toll emotionally, physically, and on gear. It's a major accomplishment to finish at all.

Congrats to Storm/Crash for doing it. He perservered.

I haven't been paying attention...
but what is Scotts status?

And for the record...even though Scott is my arch nemesis, I applaude his efforts, even if he doesn't finish. Many of us will NEVER even begin an endeavor of this magnitude, let alone complete it. He may be a class A putz, but, he hit the AT trail with the spirit in his soul and whether or not he finishes, is not important...he started, which is alot more than I'll EVER be able to say, cause the AT is not on my "must do" list.
