i'm making a SS windscreen!
do I have to have 1/4" of space around the pot? will it matter if the alum.flashing that i'm using touches the pot anywhere?

1/4 inch is good to allow decent air flow. The wind screen acts much like a limiter on the air flow, so you need 1/4 inch or so - if it touches at a point or too it prolly won't matter much, just so it's not tight all the way around.

It servew two purposes, 1. to keep the breeze from blowing the heat out from under the pot and 2. to help the stove "breathe" properly.

i use one that only goes about 1/2 to 3/5 of the way around the pot. i put it on the windward side. it works great. the ones that go all the way around are too clumbsy for me personally....since i'm a clutzy dork....

damn. thanx Roam. i shoulda left it the way it was & waited for info, but nooo, i gotta go wreck the stupid thing.

strat--the SS flashing one is easy to make(sorta-if you think before modifying )and goes all around the pot, and is a potstand too. he's a genius or else has waaaay too much spare time :)

ROTGLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You talking about me?
You talking about me? LOL

How embarassing, cut it out, you guys.....

Yep, the windscreen needs to be from around 1/4 to 3/8 inches from the pot sides to work best. Doesn't have to be perfect, just workable.

When I first read this thread I thought y'all were talking about making a windscreen from Stainless Steel (SS). I was thinking nice but heavyer than needed. LOL.

strat - that's how I earned my trail name. I stomped one of my stovestands/windscreens flat one night by mistake. After cussing a bit, I picked it up and bent it back into shape. Still use that one ever now and then. It just ain't as pretty as it was. Ha Ha.

from Stovestomper..
"Windscreens should stand away from the pot sides about 1/4 to 3/8". Any closer and they block heat, farther and too much outside air blows in.
Combustion air must be let in for the burner to burn. I make a full row of 1/4" holes around the bottom of all my windscreens.
Windscreens should come up at least partway up the pot, but all the way up the pot sides will block heat. An inch or so works fine.
Generally, the pot should sit about 3/4 to 1" above the alcohol burner, so size your pot stand for this.
Try different measurements and see what the difference in boil times it makes."
