It's beef for dinner
Canned Beef
Heavy, but I would consider it for the first day or two.

I also like the fact that it is beef that isn't beefed up with chemicals. The price is 4.99, but what is the weight of the contents?

Interesting. Yes, heavy, but it might be great for situations where there's room to splurge on weight a little.

Canned beef is not new. I get it for $1.74 per can. Very tasty too.

For years I have been using canned chicken and beef for just the purpose stated by Stove Stomper. It works okay for overnighters and the first day or two of a trip.

Now I'd be more inclined to dehydrate ground beef for the same purpose. But then for a one-night trip, canned probably works out better.

Yah, but you gotta pack out the can.

If the anti-radiation ninnies would shut their traps, we could have irradiated beef and chicken, sealed in plastic, that would be shelf-stable for years. Perfect for backpacking!

Don't know about the irradiated stuff, but personally anything that can sit on the shelf for that long and not start to stink worries me a little.

14 ounces, oops, i reread the ad. Now there's a serving of beef! I'm thinking about owning my own cows, and canning the beef instead of freezing it. I think it takes about 1 hour in a pressure cooker. Guaranteed to be tender.:)

My Grandmother used to can meat in jars at home all the time.
Very laborintensive but I remember eating some when I was a kid at her house and it was good.
A jar or two might spoil but you knew it was spoiled the instant the lid was removed. Stinky is not the word.

Back during the Spanish American War, Gen. Nelson Miles, then commanding general of the Army, testified before Congress about canned beef, then new, that had spoiled by the time it got to the troops. Miles called it "embalmed beef."

Irradiated beef. Goes well with a side of mantles.

Walmart carries this, it looks a lot like canned dog food.

We tried the Mexican flavor, it made preety good Tacos.

I once brought some canned beef and canned chicken to add to the Enertia meals we were going to eat (I was in charge of the group's food for the hike). One of the people in the group declined, saying that all canned meat tastes like tuna fish.

He was right.

tried the beef in a Pouch, didn't like it. Thought it kind a tasted like spam, but I liked spam a little more, and it costs less too.

Did someone ever try the dried beef in those glas jars?? I always wondered.

The beef in glass jars is so nasty it is not edible. It is like all salt.

I've carried the small cans of chicken, tuna, or ham for eating at the end of a trip when all the fresh foods are long gone. It's easy to cook up with some mac and cheese or rice dish when you're having one of those wiped-out or rainy "I don't wanna cook" nights.

Any form of canned beef should be known simply as... "product".

Canned Food
I take canned corned beef on trips to the bc with me on my hikes. It's compact not to heavy or pricey. I enjoy it. It taste good and it is fairly good for you. It has good protein, good fats , good salts. One can is plenty to eat, add a few veggies on the side perfect meal. Just my opinion.

I have always subscribed to the theory that if Beef was supposed to canned, cows would be born with can openers in place of udders!
