Ok when i was young, growing up in the U.P.,We sat in blinds used apples to bait them.As i site here watching tv,the outdoor channel, this hunter(yeah right) goes to his blind,or better yet a nice small house heated and all.has a telescope on a tripod,to spot the deer, this i can see (a little) but then as the deer gets closer he plus out a pair of pantex bocs to get a better look, now the deer is real close, as the puts them down he grabs a pistol the size of a small anti-tank gun, with a scope almost as big, what the hell is this thats just lazy, i haven't hunted in along time 15 years or more, but damn we don't hunt anymore,we just think we do ,what happened to the thrill of the hunt,(besides dating) sorry had to do that,it really gave me a bad taste in my mouth,to people who say i'm a hunter,no your not you sit there and do nothing, thats not hunting,as i finish this i did not me to upset anyone,am not aposed to hunting, you just have to really hunt to be one,,,,thats all good day

i think the only reasons why people watch those hunting shows is cause of the tons of big deer.

i don't know anyone who would want to "hunt" like that, and not many people who could afford.

those "hunts" cost a crap load of money.

i don't think more than 1% of hunters are the into that t.v. style of "hunting"

comparing those t.v. 'hunts' to real hunting is like comparing that WWF 'wrestling' with real wrestling.

My wife's uncle is a die-hard deer hunter (and anything else in season). Believe me, he's just like you nomad. One shotgun, small scope, tracks them miles before the shot, will track them miles after (for the occasional bad shot). No warm n fuzzy heated blind for him!

The only heating I get hunting is from body heat as I hike over the mountain behind my uncle's house.

I'm with Lumberzac (Hi, Zac). More deer than dogs in this part of the world - three dear were killed by cars on the road in front of where I was hunting last season. BASTIDS!

BTW, hunting fish is a real term. Fly fishermen, especially those who like to stalk brown trout in freestone or limestone rivers refer to the sport as hunting (and usually releasing) trout.

It's kinda like watching Norm Abrams make a beautiful piece of furniture with his million dollar workshop. It's alot easier with the best equipment. I always hope he'll get a laser in the retina someday. ;)

Big Game Ranch hunting is a joke....
Many times on those shows they release the animal right near the blind!
I used to hunt with my dad and brothers and cousins and we would do "still hunting" which is like Stalking in the mornings, then get together for some drives, where we would set up a line of "watchers" with 1/2 of us at one end of area of woods/fields/hill/swamp/etc and the other 1/2 would go approx 1/2-3/4 of a mile away and walk towards the watchers.
It would worked most of the time. It was definatly more challenging then "blind" hunting, especially with drives the hard part is trying to shoot a deer on the run thru the woods without shooting your relative!! LOL.....
I like "still" hunting best, sneaking up on the deer.... one on one... I used scents to cover my human stink, and when I have had a deer running, I'd blow on my buck grunt and 9 out 10 times it will stop and look right back at ya.... I have not hunted in a few years since my father has passed. I got more fun hanging with him and my relatives then actually hunting....

I think alot of people get the wrong idea of how to hunt. It's very romantic to stalk an animal...fair chase and all. But who really have that kind of time. Most hunters will check out the forest in the pre-season and set up their treestands or blinds.

Some hunters don't even have the time to scout the area....so they pay someone (outfitters) to do the work...and they just go to the spot to hunt.

Some people will consider this wrong. Some people consider baiting wrong....hounds chasing bears wrong. Fishing wrong (PETA people). So where do we draw the line and say which is right, and which is wrong?

Of course, I'm not avocating that hunters should go into the forest with fully automatic weapons.

baiting isnt wrong its all in how you bait them...now lets say you are hunting white tail deer in GA like i used to...well if you go out and pour a 50 gallon drum of corn out and sit to wait on the deer to come, yeah thats kinda wrong...now you can go out and plant rye, millet, wheat, whatever your choice is ahead of season and that to me is ok you are only fattening them up for the shot...kinda leading them on but then again deer in south GA can be scarce in areas...especially when you get near the okefenokee swamp it can be hard to track also...

Oh yeah....now hunters are using game cams to see which spot/trail have the big deers. Isn't that abit like cheating too?

I haven't hunted since I was a kid in the early 60's and then it was about the meat. Trophies were for out of state hunters with money. That being the case it was more of a harvest. Shoot them as close to the truck as possible to shorten the drag. Nothing was wasted. If your freezer was full there were always people in town that could use the meat.

I read something awhile ago about bear baiting. Putting out huge amounts of sugared treats to draw in bear and then shooting them. Wild life officials have reported that random samplings of the black bear populations have revealed that many bears now have cavities. Folks have also reported bear running dizzily and stumbling due to sugar highs. No joke. This practice is not geographically restricted but prevails throughout the country. In my opinion it sucks.

I'll never begrudge anyone shooting game for needed food, in season or out. Up here there are so many deer that they constitute a serious road safety problem. I guess it's the horn hunters that bother me...especially when the meat is discarded.

if you have to hunt, then go out and hunt. But this is just sick!

Miss. bill banning Internet hunting goes to governorHOLBROOK MOHRAssociated PressJACKSON, Miss. - You can shop online, book a vacation or play video games, but how about shooting an exotic animal with a remote-controlled rifle from miles away?
Not if the animal is in Mississippi, and Gov. Haley Barbour signs a proposed bill into law.
The bill, which was given final legislative approval Thursday in the House, arose after a Texas company offered computer hunting, in which a person could sign on to the Internet, use a mouse or keyboard to put an animal in the computer sights and fire a shot with the click of a button.
The practice has since been banned in Texas and other states.
San Antonio-based Live-Shot had offered hunters the chance to pick from several animals - Barbary Sheep, Blackbuck Antelope, wild hogs and deer. The company would ship meat or trophy mounts to hunters for a fee.
The bill would make it illegal to offer Internet hunting services in Mississippi.
On its Web site, Live-Shot said it is no longer able to offer the service, which it says was geared toward disabled hunters.
"Prior to the ban, we proved that with determination, practice, patience, and perseverance, a man who thought that he would never have an opportunity to hunt again was able to harvest an animal while bound to his ventilator in his room," the company said.
Live-Shot did not respond to messages left by The Associated Press on Friday.
The Humane Society of the United States says the practice is "egregious trophy hunting" and hopes Barbour will help lawmakers shoot down Internet hunting before it takes off here.
The practice "amounts to nothing more than pay-per-view slaughter," Michael Markarian, HSUS executive vice president, said in a written statement.
"Responsible hunters know there's no sport in shooting an animal remotely while lying in bed and wearing camouflage pajamas. We urge Gov. Barbour to sign this bill into law now and snuff out this snuff film scenario," he said.
More than a dozen states have banned the practice, and others are considering similar bills, the HSUS said.
The Mississippi bill was proposed by Sen. Lynn Posey, D-Union Church, chairman of the Senate Wildlife Committee.
"To me, Internet hunting just undermines the long tradition of outdoor heritage and sportsman's ethics that the sportsman of Mississippi has. With all this going on, we thought it was important to get this legislation in place to protect our hunting values," Posey said.
Posey said Internet hunting was not geared toward disabled hunters but was "something someone figured out how to make a dollar off of."
The bill, approved earlier by the Senate, would prohibit the use of a "computer or any other device, equipment or software to remotely control the aiming and discharge of archery equipment, firearms or primitive firearms to take any game animal or bird."
Violators could be fined from $2,000 to $5,000 and imprisoned in a county jail for five days. They would lose all hunting privileges for one year.
If signed into law, the bill would take effect July 1.
