I looked up Bullock's biography through google and it appears he was a solid citizen.

I knew I recognized him from somewhere. Didn't make the connection...

Everytime I see that guy I make the connection. He's a funny dude. He's plucked the humor out of this role as well.

It seems all these people actually lived and died in Deadwood. They tapped their biographies and brought them back to life. A lot of historical research went into this series.

Al Swearengen actually ran the Gem saloon, and was a fairly upstanding Deadwood citizen.

If you go to HBO, then to Deadwood, they have a link to a museum in the real Deadwood that talks about the historical people.

Did anyone see the picture of Pfc. England (Prisoner abuser) on Drudge... Holy cow! She's a dead ringer for Calamity Jane.

I'll take your word for it, Bison. Drudge is too far down the list of priorities for me...

C'mon now Tree, if I can check out Slate on a daily basis, you can look at Drudge every once in awhile.

That's ok. I don't even know who Slate is. Bison, I really am the type who formulates my own opinions by reading and digesting info from several sources, while trying to avoid any source that professes to be either liberal or conservative or one-sided in any particular way, because the nature of a declaration like that makes the views inherently biased...
Treebeard

All media is biased(Slate is a far left news site), but this discussion is best left to other threads, I just wanna know if anyone else thinks that picture looks just like Calamity Jane from the show.

I hate Al Swearingen, and yet I love Al Swearingen. Now I think I know why.
Swearingen represents something to us men something deep inside us. We all have longing to shape the world around us. To bend the forces in our world to a purpose that we deem important. But this is hard to accomplish living in society, in which we are taught that the wants and opinion of others need to be considered for the good of the whole. Our instinct to create our own world is subverted by this, and that is a good thing. We can see in the real world the destruction that is wrought by absolute rulers whether they be a dictator, mob boss, or school bully. But in Swearingen we can disassociate ourselves from that destruction in a way that I haven't found possible with other such characters in television and film, because he is shown to be more violently pragmatic than simply evil. And that is how we can identify and even sympathize with him. He doesn't represent evil desires to conquer and control but rather, more complexly, our primal desire to be free enough from conscience to adapt the world around us to ourselves in a manner that we see fit.

Extremely astts and well put, Bison. I think Ian McShane is absolutely fantastic as Al. But, as for his character, it's hard to add to your assessment. It's on the money! Like you say, Swearingen is not inherently evil. It takes a certain type of character to do what he does and it involves certain ruthless behavior. Kind of a product of what he does and again, like you said, has to dissociate himself from the morality of his actions. I guess being in a lawless town makes that somewhat easier to do, also.

What you say would be true if he hadn't been using highwaymen to rob and slaughter the hoopleheads when they left deadwood to go back east. That was evil, not a neccessity.
Hyway

And now we have the direct contrast with Tolliver which has added to our portrait of Swearingen. Tolliver represents the real evil.

Hyway - The highwaymen we're working on their own when they slaughtered the squareheads, Swearingen didn't order that and was royal pissed when he found out that they had done it.
Bison

he was pissed that they left someone alive and did something without his concent and planning. he is a control freak lOL He wasn't upset that thye killed them.
Hyway
8:44:49 AM

But that's the point, Swearingen never would have ordered the squareheads killed, he had no direct and specific reason for it.

I would have missed it anyway since I would be in the woods, but I could have caught the replay of it later in the week. Guess I will just have to rewatch all the other episodes until they put the next episode up.

What the hell, this weeks episode ran long (it's usually 55 minutes, the TIVO was set up to record for the scheduled hour as usual) and my TIVO didn't get all of it. My recording ended as Swearingen was ranting about the lady who ran the orphanage.

Wow! Whoever said on this thread the Bullock is not complex should have seen the final episode for the season. He may be the most complex character on the show.

Peter Coyote as Gen. Crook seemed a bit overplayed to me.

And the usual attention to detail went out the window with the magistrate's murder. There would have been a lot more blood on the floor than that measly puddle.

But great ending nonetheless.

My sister and her girlfriend went there this past weekend. She said they had a blast, hung out with the guy who plays Wild Bill. Then they met and partie with a group of a dozen or so real-live cowboys at the bar who were celebrating a bachelor party. Yup, they had a good time in Deadwood.

They also on this two-day marathon, fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants trip did some spelunking, rode horses to the top of a small mountain, saw Mt. Rushmore, and went to Sturgis. Who knew there was so much to do in South Dakota?

The new series is supposed to start in March. The Sopranos is supposed to start shooting the next season sometime early in the year.

HBO plays its cards close to the vest.
