I heard a little about this show on the radio. Is it on HBO? Anyone seen it?

Check out the Sopranos thread bacpac. Treebeard brought the subject up on that thread, but it should have one of its own.

Here's what was said
Re Deadwood, I have watched the teaser for the show, and I read the Time article about it. If I hadn't, I may have felt the same way.

Thought the acting was superb, and the set and costuming fantastic. Best line was Calamity Jane walking out of the saloon saying, "I refuse to drink where I'm the only person with balls!"

The show lived up to my expectations. Swearington promises to be an interesting character. The others as well.

Seems like a sort of pre-mob Sopranos!"

"Swearington is the saloon owner, and he controls everything in Deadwood. He has his hands in just about everything, from who gets to tent on "his" land to manipulating things. His one and only desire is to get the gold from the prospectors and miners.

Enter into that milieu Wild Bill Hickock and the ex-sheriff, and you have the setting for conflict and drama.

The overarching theme is the seediness and dirt of a town existing outside legal jurisdiction, having gotten its start from the Black Hills gold rush.

Swearington seems well fitted for that power vaccuum."

Deadwood
I saw it last night. HBO. Very interesting. Not for the squeemish or sensitive. Lots of frontal nudity (male and female) some grizzly stuff (doc sticking probe in one temple and out the other in head would and dead guys corpse being fed to pigs) and lots and lots of profanity. Very realistic I think. What a depressing time and place to live in my opinion.

I'm watching it for one reason. The Old Style Saloon No. 10 is my favorite bar in the world. I can sit in there and sip on some beers and watch the world go by all day long.

The "current" Saloon #10 or the original Saloon #10 where Wild Bill was shot by Jack McCall?

I use to work at The Gold Dust and also Tin Lizzy's.

Been to the Moriah Cemetary?

I didn't see the series, I don't have HBO. Do they show how Deadwood is tucked down between those steep hills?

Knowing Hollywood, they probably filmed it in Canada or Yugoslavia.

I was to Deadwood once, in the middle of the night. Same with Lead. Amazing how the gold mine just kinda drops away from the city street. Whatever happened to the underground tech stuff they wanted to develop in the old gold mine? And the current co. holding the mine -- some CANADIAN OUTFIT, nonetheless -- was ready to stop the pumps and flood it out just as an agreement was being reached?

Okay, another great HBO series. They've got me hooked.

I was thinking that if somebody payed me a nickel for everytime the F word is used in the Sopranos and Deadwood each week, it would likely pay my cable bill.

I like being able to watch the episodes over several times. I catch things I missed on first go-through. Can't wait till last night's episode turns up on Comcast on Demand so I can use the rewind and playback. Some of Calamity Jane's lines get lost.

It looks like Al Swearington has got his hands more full than Tony Soprano with his basement bugged. He senses his world is going out of control and he's struggling to keep up.

Yeah, Geo! I am now officially hooked. Now that I understand who's who and what they are doing, I think this is a great show! I should have done a little reviewing of the characters and basic premise before I watched that first one. Last night's was really good!!

I caught glimpses of the making of Deadwood teaser, then watched the entire thing from On Demand. I've been waiting for this since I got the cable installed back in February. First, I love westerns. Second, I liked the premise of a gritty show instead of the old milquetoast Hollywood versions.

I'm also a fan of Gunsmoke. They run two episodes a night on the Western Channel. Not much else holds a candle to Gunsmoke. What an ensemble cast!
Geobeet

True. The old westerns were pretty cool. I personally loved the Wild, Wild West. That was a little different than your average western, but a great show nonetheless...
Treebeard

When I was a kid, we'd listen to Gunsmoke on the radio on the farm. A highlight of the week. It was preceded by The Lone Ranger. But Gunsmoke was a better show by far. When it came out on TV it was great to have images. It was scripted pretty much the same way.

I was also interested in Wild Bill Hickock as a kid. There was a Wild Bill Hickock show with Guy Madison playing Wild Bill, but he looked nothing like the real Wild Bill and the show was very fanciful.

But I started reading about the real Wild Bill, and he was a fascinating character.

The real Wild Bill carried his revolvers in a waist sash, not the traditional holsters. He normally sat with his back to the wall while gambling (Deadwood uses this, but says not a word about it or why), so he could keep everybody in view. When he was shot, he did not have his back to the wall.

Keith Carradine is certainly well made up and has an uncanny resemblance to the real Wild Bill. Probably the best characterization of Wild Bill to date.

Casting is a big part of the show. It's extremely well cast.

isn't is weird that we look at a box, wasting our time in this world, pretending to be somewhere else, wishing for better things, hoping to find answers....

Television is not inherently evil in my eyes, Strat. It's a selective process. Frankly, I watch less TV these days than I ever did in my life. Right now, there are three shows that I watch religiously. And two of them are mentioned here (and in the other HBO thread). Sopranos and Deadwood. The other show I really enjoy are reruns of Seinfeld. So, my TV watching is very limited. I like to get a little morning news coverage and that is usually more listened to as I get ready for work. I am not interested in reality TV and the comedy shows mostly suck these days. The point is, everyone needs to unwind into that little "pretend world" for a limited amount of time. So, it is not THAT 'evil' if you can still maintain a life outsode the box, so to speak...
Treebeard

I probably watch about the same amount of TV I always did, but I'm a lot more selective. Mostly it's stuff on Discovery Channel, or something like that. Occaisionally my wife and I will sit down and watch an old movie on Turner Classic or AMC. Or just put in a DVD. My bro and his wife gave me a boxed set of all 20 Bond movies for my birthday, and I've been going through those slowly. Watched "Diamonds Are Forever" last night. Boy, Jill St. John was a hot number...
