Noticed recently that Wally World now carries lexan utensils in their camping section. I think it is a set of 16 (4 each tsp, tbsp, fork, knife) for around $5.

I know I paid close to that just for two tablespoons maybe 2 years ago (I only carry one tablespoon in my pack, no fork, etc). REI still sells just two spoons for $1.25. Just FYI, in case someone can use the info. to pick up some cheap lexan.

I am looking for a long-daddy of a spoon to reach into the far corners of my enertia bag. Did you see any of those?? :-)

The only bummer about cutting the top off, chili, is that, being frugal me, sometimes I re-use the bag for when I make my own dehdrated stuff.

What about one of those goofy sundae/soda spoons they sell at the grocery store in the ice cream and toppings area? Light plastic and long.....

I got that very Lexan set that was mentioned before thread degradation. I want to know what to use to burn or cut a hole in them, so I can easily attach to a carabiner or something else to potentially keep a spoon and fork together (god forbid I take both, I realize. Just pretend I'm asking to put holes in them to make them lighter weight.)

lizs - to "make them lighter weight" is OK. Complete blasphemy if you think you are taking two eating utensils on one trip. You only have one mouth, right?

:-)

bit has the right idea, a small drill bit would be perfect. The stuff is so slippery if you can make a dent in it with some pointy object first it will keep the bit from slipping around.

Heck lizs, I carry two spoons.
My 'main' lexan spoon, and a plastic 'Wendy's' spoon in my emergency kit.
I had 'lost' my lexan spoon inside my pack one trip. I was in a panic till I found it. Try eating Mountain House FD meals with your fingers. ;-)
I now carry a backup.

I carry both a lexan spoon and fork. I figure it won't kill me to carry an extra 1/3 of an ounce. Come to think about it, wouldn't a fork be lighter than a spoon?

Speaking of chopsticks, I have some plastic pairs we brought back from China, including a small child's set my daughter used in her school "lunch box."

lizs

ewww, now that's where I'll draw the line. I don't cut my toothbrush, and I sure as heck don't forget about my toothbrush. The're just little things I want and need, even in the wilderness.

I did forget my spoon before though, so I had to eat with a stick. couple of coodies didn't hurt anyone yet.

lightweight is awesome, but I do want to feel comfortable too. Now that I think about it, I guess that's why my pack is always around 30 lbs, even I try to pack light. It will never get any lighter with me. I really don't think so

Well, a drill and drillbit is the best tool. Sure, you could probably gouge a hole in the thing with a knife, or heat up a knitting needle on the stove and melt a hole in the stuff, but both of those options are considerably more dangerous than using the correct tool.

Here is a Sears 7.2V cordless drill that even comes with bits and drivers, for less than $20. They are extremely useful.

"Well some of us don't have drills and bits. Any other ideas **I** could do at home, potentially?"
lizs

Gas stove, pliers, and a nail. Holding the head end of the nail firmly with the pliers, heat the other end in the gas stove flame. When red-hot, melt a hole into the spoon handle.

Small nails such as picture-hanging nails may require repeated applications to get the hole size you want.

Probably could use a candle flame to heat the nail if you don't have a gas stove.

Yep, I was just about to say... nail, heat source, pliers (vise-locs, if ya got 'em). If you jab yourself, the wound should cauterize nicely, <G>

I confess I did cut an inch or two off my toothbrush, but that was just because it kept poking a hole in the 'medicine cabinet' zip-loc.

Bit, for that price lizs can't go wrong! Heck of a lot safer than the nail-n-fire ideas. Lizs, go for it, you'll find you use it for other things once you have one.

lizs - Mail it to me and I'll drill a hole for ya!
Let's see, $3.85 here and $3.85 back, that's a $7.70 hole! ;-)

Yah, that drill is a little low-powered, but good enough for whatever light drilling one is likely to have around the house. I have a similar one that's great for just about anything, until I have to drill into metal or thick wood.

Now, for serious drilling, I have an 18V DeWalt Hammer Drill that will drill through just about anything...

Thank you for your thoughts. And as far as a toothbrush, I have one of those kinds that you put the toothpaste in the handle. Very slick, but HEAVY, I suppose. lol
