Lexan utensilsView Messages“Noticed recently that Wally World now carries lexan utensils in their camping section. I think it is a set of 16 (4 each tsp, tbsp, fork, knife) for around $5. I know I paid close to that just for two tablespoons maybe 2 years ago (I only carry one tablespoon in my pack, no fork, etc). REI still sells just two spoons for $1.25. Just FYI, in case someone can use the info. to pick up some cheap lexan.” 10:52:49 AM 3/23/04 “I am looking for a long-daddy of a spoon to reach into the far corners of my enertia bag. Did you see any of those?? :-)” 10:56:04 AM 3/23/04 “Just cut the top of the bag off.” 11:03:55 AM 3/23/04 “yam, ask SirPete. I think he was finally successful in his quest for the Long Spoon.” 11:05:02 AM 3/23/04 “Chili, you just earned your salary.” 11:36:05 AM 3/23/04 “YES. Lexan Iced Tea Spoons! <G>” 11:39:53 AM 3/23/04 “The only bummer about cutting the top off, chili, is that, being frugal me, sometimes I re-use the bag for when I make my own dehdrated stuff.” 11:44:07 AM 3/23/04 “<sigh> There's just no pleasing some women...” 11:45:06 AM 3/23/04 “:-0” 11:45:42 AM 3/23/04 “:-P” 11:46:13 AM 3/23/04 “LOL!! I don't even know what half the faces mean!” 11:47:55 AM 3/23/04 “‡-Д 11:49:27 AM 3/23/04 “8-Þ” 11:50:29 AM 3/23/04 “%-” 11:51:36 AM 3/23/04 “8-|>” 11:51:56 AM 3/23/04 “Isn't thread degeneration a #&%!$?” 11:52:24 AM 3/23/04 “Ban us all.” 11:53:22 AM 3/23/04 “ack!” 11:55:51 AM 3/23/04 “ ”11:55:51 AM 3/23/04 “It's not Lexan...” 11:56:13 AM 3/23/04 “Chattering on a gear thread! Shoot us now!” 11:56:47 AM 3/23/04 “:-P” 11:59:41 AM 3/23/04 “What about one of those goofy sundae/soda spoons they sell at the grocery store in the ice cream and toppings area? Light plastic and long.....” 12:35:55 PM 3/23/04 “I got that very Lexan set that was mentioned before thread degradation. I want to know what to use to burn or cut a hole in them, so I can easily attach to a carabiner or something else to potentially keep a spoon and fork together (god forbid I take both, I realize. Just pretend I'm asking to put holes in them to make them lighter weight.)” 1:10:13 PM 3/23/04 “A drill and drillbit would work pretty good, lizs...” 1:11:03 PM 3/23/04 YAM “I roll the sides down that way the bag is still good :-).... PS I love Enertia Foods !!!” 1:15:34 PM 3/23/04 “lizs - to "make them lighter weight" is OK. Complete blasphemy if you think you are taking two eating utensils on one trip. You only have one mouth, right? :-) bit has the right idea, a small drill bit would be perfect. The stuff is so slippery if you can make a dent in it with some pointy object first it will keep the bit from slipping around.” 1:37:07 PM 3/23/04 “Heck lizs, I carry two spoons. My 'main' lexan spoon, and a plastic 'Wendy's' spoon in my emergency kit. I had 'lost' my lexan spoon inside my pack one trip. I was in a panic till I found it. Try eating Mountain House FD meals with your fingers. ;-) I now carry a backup.” 1:43:44 PM 3/23/04 “You rang?” 1:44:50 PM 3/23/04 “I carry both a lexan spoon and fork. I figure it won't kill me to carry an extra 1/3 of an ounce. Come to think about it, wouldn't a fork be lighter than a spoon?” 1:47:34 PM 3/23/04 “Yah, but try to eat pudding with one sometime...” 1:48:46 PM 3/23/04 “StoveStomper, you didn't whittle a new wood spoon from available tree branches?” 1:50:14 PM 3/23/04 “If I can eat rice with chopsticks I can eat pudding with a fork.” 1:50:22 PM 3/23/04 “Speaking of chopsticks, I have some plastic pairs we brought back from China, including a small child's set my daughter used in her school "lunch box."” 1:53:39 PM 3/23/04 “techntrek - Making a stick spoon was next, if I hadn't found my 'lost' spoon in the pack.” 2:09:49 PM 3/23/04 “:-)” 2:13:50 PM 3/23/04 “anyway, if you look in there picnic section you'll find lexan sets for 99 cents in call kind of colors. LOL” 2:20:13 PM 3/23/04 “I tried to save space by carrying a child's toothbrush but it took me half an hour to brush my teeth!” 2:37:25 PM 3/23/04 “Toothbrush? We don't need to stinkin toothbrush!” 3:03:44 PM 3/23/04 “Well some of us don't have drills and bits. Any other ideas **I** could do at home, potentially?” 3:22:06 PM 3/23/04 “ewww, now that's where I'll draw the line. I don't cut my toothbrush, and I sure as heck don't forget about my toothbrush. The're just little things I want and need, even in the wilderness. I did forget my spoon before though, so I had to eat with a stick. couple of coodies didn't hurt anyone yet. lightweight is awesome, but I do want to feel comfortable too. Now that I think about it, I guess that's why my pack is always around 30 lbs, even I try to pack light. It will never get any lighter with me. I really don't think so” 3:24:37 PM 3/23/04 “Well, a drill and drillbit is the best tool. Sure, you could probably gouge a hole in the thing with a knife, or heat up a knitting needle on the stove and melt a hole in the stuff, but both of those options are considerably more dangerous than using the correct tool. Here is a Sears 7.2V cordless drill that even comes with bits and drivers, for less than $20. They are extremely useful.” 3:29:13 PM 3/23/04 “"Well some of us don't have drills and bits. Any other ideas **I** could do at home, potentially?" lizs Gas stove, pliers, and a nail. Holding the head end of the nail firmly with the pliers, heat the other end in the gas stove flame. When red-hot, melt a hole into the spoon handle. Small nails such as picture-hanging nails may require repeated applications to get the hole size you want. Probably could use a candle flame to heat the nail if you don't have a gas stove.” 3:35:43 PM 3/23/04 “Yep, I was just about to say... nail, heat source, pliers (vise-locs, if ya got 'em). If you jab yourself, the wound should cauterize nicely, <G> I confess I did cut an inch or two off my toothbrush, but that was just because it kept poking a hole in the 'medicine cabinet' zip-loc.” 8:01:28 PM 3/23/04 “if you want long plastic spoons just go to dairy queen....” 8:34:45 PM 3/23/04 “Bit, for that price lizs can't go wrong! Heck of a lot safer than the nail-n-fire ideas. Lizs, go for it, you'll find you use it for other things once you have one.” 7:43:54 AM 3/24/04 I'm with Gem “Gotta brush them Choppers! I hate the feeling of grungy mouth, so I do have a tooth brush :-) I cut my tooth brush down and drill holes in it too, wicked light now....haha shep, That dairy queen idea is a good one!!!! I'll be stopping there!” 8:15:36 AM 3/24/04 “lizs - Mail it to me and I'll drill a hole for ya! Let's see, $3.85 here and $3.85 back, that's a $7.70 hole! ;-)” 8:34:41 AM 3/24/04 “Yah, that drill is a little low-powered, but good enough for whatever light drilling one is likely to have around the house. I have a similar one that's great for just about anything, until I have to drill into metal or thick wood. Now, for serious drilling, I have an 18V DeWalt Hammer Drill that will drill through just about anything...” 8:44:59 AM 3/24/04 “Thank you for your thoughts. And as far as a toothbrush, I have one of those kinds that you put the toothpaste in the handle. Very slick, but HEAVY, I suppose. lol” 11:17:52 AM 3/24/04
