Yeah it's gear “I have a little trick for this, but it's probably not a truly original idea. phhhhht! I use Dry Idea clear gel. I'll put the gel into a little baggie. You want deodorant (maybe even anti-perspirant, too!! yee haw!) protection, just open the baggie and rub it on your pits. Awwww... I said PITS! Anyhoo, works for me.” 3:28:44 PM 3/23/04 “Thank you so much for that mental imagery, lizs.” 3:31:40 PM 3/23/04 “Every time I see the word "Deoderant" for a split second I think it's my nickname.” 3:32:28 PM 3/23/04 “Should the folks joining you in Iowa take this as a hint about deodorant being required ??? :^)” 3:32:42 PM 3/23/04 “Why pack deodorant on a hike? I'm serious about this. And to use an antiperspirant when you are purposely engaging in an activity sure to make you perspire seems to point out the absurd in the human race. How about washing up occasionally. That should do the trick. If you stink so much that you can't stand yourself, think about changing your diet.” 3:33:07 PM 3/23/04 “Personally, I enjoy my ability to clear out a Pizza Hut when I come in for my post-hike gluttony, lol...” 3:33:42 PM 3/23/04 “there is a crystal you can buy that doesn't smell (fragrance free). That crystal is pretty hard, so it easy to take along. you need to wet it und rub under your arms. works okay. I just never take it with me. but then I found some fragrance free deodorant the other day at eckards.” 3:35:05 PM 3/23/04 “Now that's the spirit, Bit.” 3:35:15 PM 3/23/04 “Yea! That was nice. I can just imagine that now.” 3:35:25 PM 3/23/04 “I stank so bad after my 2002 AT hike that my wife made me change clothes downstairs, lol...” 3:36:07 PM 3/23/04 “Where do you people hike? The aisles of Walmart?” 3:36:42 PM 3/23/04 “Hmmm. My wife makes me change in the garage even after an overnighter....” 3:37:13 PM 3/23/04 “I don't wear deodorant while hiking because it attacks black flies, but I have left a stick in the car for when I'm done.” 3:39:54 PM 3/23/04 “"Where do you people hike? The aisles of Walmart?" Dunadan 03:36:42 PM 03/23/04 At least they hike. ;-)” 3:40:08 PM 3/23/04 “I wish I could remember the thread, but on one of our post-Sipsey hikes, we all sat down next to this family fresh from church. Apparently the looks from the mom were priceless; I don't know personally because my (stinky) back was to her, lol....” 3:40:49 PM 3/23/04 “Lumber - does the deodorent kill the flies dead? What exactly are you using?” 3:46:32 PM 3/23/04 “After my trip in the 'dacks with no deodorant I headed to Lake Placid. I went to a really nice restaurant and had the courtesy to sit outside where there were only a few people. The waitress was very pleasant with me and she got 30%.” 3:49:04 PM 3/23/04 “BAN ROLL ON!!!” 3:50:20 PM 3/23/04 “I bailed at the end of a hike in Penn last year cause of the knees. 2 guys picked me up and took me back to my Jeep. After 30 seconds the guy in the passanger seat rolled down his window. Both looked at each other like they were going to pass out.” 3:51:31 PM 3/23/04 “Women!” 3:52:21 PM 3/23/04 “I can't prove it but don't deodorants attract bugs and varmints? In Port Clinton, a trail town along the AT in PA, one of the restaurants has a sign on the porch asking that you not block the stairs with your pack and one inside asking hikers to eat in the bar, not the dining room.” 3:55:09 PM 3/23/04 “I sweat! And yes, I take Wet Wipes to clean up. Then I put on my weightless deodorant/anti-perspirant from the baggie. Oh yeah, it's ODOR FREE. And so am I. :-)” 4:04:00 PM 3/23/04 “I'll never be so anal retentive about weight that I can't throw a stick of deodorant in. As far as attracting bugs, I find the ones about my head and face to be the only ones I notice.” 4:04:30 PM 3/23/04 “I've been experimenting with deoderant on hikes. If I wake up, take a shower, then head out to the trail and never put on deoderant--I'll be stinky the first day. If I wash up after that day then it usually isn't so bad. My shirt usually stinks pretty bad after about 3 days. Now if I put on deoderant before a trip, and then not put any back on during the trip I'll start to stink bad by the second day. So to remedy this I bring more deoderant and keep putting it on. Usually its not me at the end of a hike that stinks--its my shirts. Synthetics love to harbor smell. Now if I could only figure out how to stop the smell without washing them everyday...” 4:06:10 PM 3/23/04 “I have no problem with people that use deodorant. Have I ever told you what a close relationship I've had with bears? That's the only reson I don't” 4:07:35 PM 3/23/04 “i just carry baking soda and corn starch in a small plastic salt and pepper shaker, baking soda works well instead of toothpaste and mix both together for footpowder also, works fer me.” 4:45:03 PM 3/23/04 “JIHAD DEODORANT!” 4:45:45 PM 3/23/04 “anti-perspirant is the devil! you're supposed to sweat, it lets out the ol' toxins. the baggie is a good idea, though, Lizs! i used to bring deodorant, but not no mo'.” 5:05:00 PM 3/23/04 “Deodorant? What's that?” 5:06:20 PM 3/23/04 “I can't believe you guys will carry a .25 ounce baggie instead of just carrying the 1 ounce travel deoderant stick. Why not leave a couple sheets of toilet paper out to make up for it?” 5:08:20 PM 3/23/04 “quarter ounces make ounces and ounces make pounds. You can save maybe a whole half ounce (depending) if you cut all the tags outta your clothes.” 5:13:09 PM 3/23/04 “Dub, you just don't get it, do you? ;-)” 5:19:11 PM 3/23/04 “Come on if you were real packers you would make it out of stuff you find along the trail......... or use roll on :)” 5:22:50 PM 3/23/04 “Actually I do weigh all of my gear and throw out stuff I don't need. Like a 2lbs knife, a 2lbs D Maglite, an 11oz pillow. I even threw out some 1-2 ounce items. But then I realized I like some luxury when backpacking. So I added a 10oz thermarest chair kit, a 6oz GPS, etc. I don't drill holes in my toilet trowel, saw off my toothbrush, or cut the tags off of things--that's too ultralight wankerish for me. I will, however, knock off a pound here or there. Just ordered the prolite 4, will save a pound from my old TAR. Aether 60 saved 3lbs from the Shasta. The ULyear tent saves 3.5lbs from the Half Dome. But I will never put deoderant in a bag to save .75 ounces...I'll just carry the 1 ounce stick.” 6:04:17 PM 3/23/04 “LET FOOTLONGWILLY GET IN THIS DEBATE NOW THAT I HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THE ONE INCH WANG PROBLEM ON ANOTHER THREAD I MUST DEAL WITH THE ISSUES CONCERNING THE REST OF TRAILTALK FOOTLONGWILLY USES NO DEODORANTS FOOTLONGWILLY STAYS OUT OF STINKS WAY BY STROLLING UP AND DOWN MOUNTAINS AS IF OUT FOR A WALK IN THE PARK FOOTLONGWILLY CAN UNDERSTAND THAT NOT EVERYONE CAN DO WHAT FOOTLONGWILLY DOES BEST BUT FOOTLONGWILLY ASKS YOU TO TRY SLOWING IT DOWN ON THE TRAIL TAKE IT EASY AND THEN YOU MAY BE IN FOOTLONGWILLY'S AREA OF BEAUTY AND SMELLGOOD” 6:25:54 PM 3/23/04 “yeah yeah yeah... anyhoo... my info has helped ONE PERSON!! Thanks for being YOU Lyra and saving weight while wearing deodorant. Thank you, Lord, I knew someone would see the light (and that my idea ain't so wankerish after all! LOL)” 6:32:36 PM 3/23/04 “My funk does not bother me. If it bothers someone else they better be packing some deodorant.” 6:36:44 PM 3/23/04 “I don't wear deodorant at all, No ones ever complained, I guess I'm just not stinky.” 6:41:08 PM 3/23/04 “ha bison...you either dont move enough to create sweat or you are a real loner...sooner or later you got to have some smell” 6:42:58 PM 3/23/04 “people actually wear deodorant, while BACKPACKING?!?!? why?!?!” 6:47:03 PM 3/23/04 “ 7:00:40 PM 3/23/04 “BAD TANGO!” 7:17:56 PM 3/23/04 “I crack myself up!” 7:19:08 PM 3/23/04 “That really stinks, Tango. Ban (pun intended?) Tango!!” 7:40:55 PM 3/23/04 “One more to check out Pens!” 7:43:11 PM 3/23/04
