Deodorant

“I have a little trick for this, but it's probably not a truly original idea. phhhhht!

I use Dry Idea clear gel. I'll put the gel into a little baggie. You want deodorant (maybe even anti-perspirant, too!! yee haw!) protection, just open the baggie and rub it on your pits.

Awwww... I said PITS! Anyhoo, works for me.”

And to use an antiperspirant when you are purposely engaging in an activity sure to make you perspire seems to point out the absurd in the human race.
How about washing up occasionally. That should do the trick. If you stink so much that you can't stand yourself, think about changing your diet.”

“there is a crystal you can buy that doesn't smell (fragrance free). That crystal is pretty hard, so it easy to take along. you need to wet it und rub under your arms. works okay. I just never take it with me.

In Port Clinton, a trail town along the AT in PA, one of the restaurants has a sign on the porch asking that you not block the stairs with your pack and one inside asking hikers to eat in the bar, not the dining room.”

“I sweat! And yes, I take Wet Wipes to clean up. Then I put on my weightless deodorant/anti-perspirant from the baggie.

Oh yeah, it's ODOR FREE. And so am I. :-)”

“I'll never be so anal retentive about weight that I can't throw a stick of deodorant in. As far as attracting bugs, I find the ones about my head and face to be the only ones I notice.”

“I've been experimenting with deoderant on hikes. If I wake up, take a shower, then head out to the trail and never put on deoderant--I'll be stinky the first day. If I wash up after that day then it usually isn't so bad. My shirt usually stinks pretty bad after about 3 days.

Now if I put on deoderant before a trip, and then not put any back on during the trip I'll start to stink bad by the second day. So to remedy this I bring more deoderant and keep putting it on.

Usually its not me at the end of a hike that stinks--its my shirts. Synthetics love to harbor smell. Now if I could only figure out how to stop the smell without washing them everyday...”

“i just carry baking soda and corn starch in a small plastic salt and pepper shaker, baking soda works well instead of toothpaste and mix both together for footpowder also, works fer me.”

“Actually I do weigh all of my gear and throw out stuff I don't need. Like a 2lbs knife, a 2lbs D Maglite, an 11oz pillow. I even threw out some 1-2 ounce items. But then I realized I like some luxury when backpacking. So I added a 10oz thermarest chair kit, a 6oz GPS, etc. I don't drill holes in my toilet trowel, saw off my toothbrush, or cut the tags off of things--that's too ultralight wankerish for me. I will, however, knock off a pound here or there. Just ordered the prolite 4, will save a pound from my old TAR. Aether 60 saved 3lbs from the Shasta. The ULyear tent saves 3.5lbs from the Half Dome. But I will never put deoderant in a bag to save .75 ounces...I'll just carry the 1 ounce stick.”
