i've section hiked it many times over, but i've yet to thru hike it. though i've wanted to since i was 18, theres just always something that comes up

reading your report has helped stir up the fires again.

anyway, i just wanted to say thanks and also give you a tip someone gave me a few years ago.

you mentioned that you came across a couple of boats but there was no paddles / oars -- for people not familiar with the area , this is very common in the adirondacks.

so here's the tip :

bring along some duct tape. lots of people [me too, now] carry it on their trek poles.

when you need an paddle, just find a nice Y branch and wrap some tape around the open part of the Y.

Voila - you'd be amazed at how well this make shift paddle works.
