Yoga and hiking
Back in Nov of last year I tried yoga for the first time and I was amazed at how good it made me feel. Now by any means is it easy but it makes you feel strong at the same time if that makes sence and lately I have noticed that I seem stronger when I hike.. so I was wondering how many hikers actually practice yoga and if they can tell if it helps them?

I practiced yoga for ten years, and my wife and I are planning on taking classes again. I can only say positive things about it.

I try to incorporate it into my running schedule when I am in training mode so as to hopefully avoid injury. I think it has helped.

Ya lost me!
Good to hear that you are enjoying your yoga class and experiencing benefits from it. Exercise is good for the body and more.
"... so I was wondering how many hikers actually practice yoga and if they can tell if it helps them?"

"... doing yoga.. it could help us hike longer I think."

What do you mean by "hike longer?" Do you mean hike more hours in a day, hike further(longer distances), hike faster, continue hiking at older ages, or something else? Thanks.

While not into yoga, the class which I attend meets right after a yoga class. Does that count? No! Well, an ex-wife was a yoga instructor. No, again! Well, anyway, I do exercise and attend aikijutsu classes at a physical fitness facility. I have not been able to detect that this exercise helps me in backpacking, but I'm sure that it does. One exception is that I have observed that workouts on a treadmill have helped me in backpacking. I have found that the best exercise for doing mountain backpacking is doing mountain backpacking.

On the reverside side, I have noticed that mountain backpacking definitely helps me in my exercise program and in my martial arts
classes.

I would say I meant "hike longer" as in hike longer in our life time.
Yeah meeting before a yoga class would not count..or being married to an instructer...but nice try.. :o)

In preparation for my anticipated '05 AT thru hike I am taking yoga, pilates, aerobics and a cardio/weight lifting program 5 days a week. I'm trying to run in the afternoon. Yoga has helped me a lot with flexibility, core strength and balance. I'm not thinking about increasing my hiking endurance with yoga, although I'm sure it will help, but I have no doubt that increasing my strength, flexibility and balance will help me to better take care of myself. That's really the bottom line isn't it?

i highly recommend pilates, haven't really had the patience to be still long enough for yoga. Core stength and balance is good for proper alignment and to prevent injury

One or two. I have a CD that I like to go through before my first couple of rounds each season. I don't stick with it, I just need to loosen up and stretch those golf muscles.

Right now I practice yoga once a week..and try to do some of the exercises in the mornings...
However Pilates was very hard for me and I couldn't really get into it... suppose I could try again.

Nice photo Buddar...wow I doubt I will ever stand on my head old neck injury..

I have not stood upon my head, but I have come straight down on it. (Ouch!) I was performing a forward flip to avoid a broken arm and failed to get enough rotation in the flip. I was glad that I was wearing a helmet.

I have pilates today. It's not so bad and I desperately need it. It's aerobics with the girls that gives me hell. I'm just a non-rhythmic white guy seemingly in a group with a bunch of athletic ballerinas. So far they haven't killed me and I won't quit. The thing I like is that progress is easily measured in all of them. I can now do things that I couldn't even approach in a not distant past. Of course there are those days when I just feel klutzy. Not giving up is one of my best gifts: not listening to the inner whiner.

I asked the private trainer at the ymca about Pilates and she said... Do It!! I need to ignore that inner voice and do IT!! I will think about you when I go back to Pilates I haven't tried in over six months... ouch will I be sore...

pilates is da bomb!! i actually have a tape that i do, with mat exercises, and i've never been to a class. but the tape kicks my ass, i love it. i have total rock-hard ab muscles, too bad they're under a layer of fat. LOL!! but i noticed a definite difference in stomach & leg strength in a couple weeks, and i have much better posture now.

yeah, the tape was much easier for me than a class, b/c i don't have to get up the motivation to leave the house, and be seen looking like a wimp in front of a bunch of people. hee hee! i got the tape i have at Barnes & Noble for $8. it's the best $8 i ever spent...i do the tape at least every other day.

I loved doing it before but had to quit because of work......

Last time I did it I saw results in less than 2 weeks.....maybe I'll do Yoga for awhile and then try Pilates.....

The question to ask yourself is how long will it take to show if you don't do Pilates? I do 3 different disciplines 5 days a week and they all seem to work together. I honestly wouldn't say Yoga is any less demanding than Pilates. Any of it has to be self paced even in a group. You can't be anywhere but where you are. That being said, I'm so damned competitive that I even race myself on the tread mill.
